Danny, I think if there is any place in the world that is close, you live there. Between this and the FF worlds, I would love to see a city like this.

There are plenty of urban planners out there who have put out ideas like this as a means of greening city centres, and helping reduce carbon levels in such places. We see basic ideas like this with rooftop gardens, or integrating series of terraces on buildings where plants can grow. However, companies who make apartment buildings, office towers, and so forth don't see the profit in doing so. In most cases, buildings have to be designed differently to support the added weight of these plants, their soil, and water to feed them, which can be quite heavy, especially to achieve something on par with the illustration above. It may look beautiful, and be great for the environment, but it does nothing for the company's profit. If anything, it makes the project more expensive, thus having a negative impact on the project's bottom line. Because of this, it's still rare to see this sort of integration of nature and urban design in real life. I remember in my hometown there were quite a few plans to include rooftop gardens in some new highrises going up, but that was quickly scrapped when it became apparent to the developers that they would just be throwing money away by proceeding with the gardens. In the end, the highrises went up sans gardens. It really is unfortunate. :(

It may take another decade or so, but green building is definitely the next step in post-modern architecture. Well, that's what I believe anyway. It's becoming more and more voiced with the new age tech-savvy young architects looking for a style of their own. And if designed properly, the savings in operating costs over a span of 10 years can make up for the cost of extra materials/time/labour during construction of a "green" building. The current generation of architects don't practice it as much because it is completely time-consuming and thus cost way too much money for researching and for the most part, out of their comfort zone. I just hope green building practices don't come too late into mainstream construction (We're pretty much doomed at the pollution rate we're going at right now)

Hopefully it is mostly a matter of these older architects drifting into retirement so that these younger ones can work their way into senior positions that will allow them to greenlight more projects that embrace urban greening. It just makes sense to go this route, even if it may be a touch expensive in the early going. I'd love to see more cities embrace it in the future. Japan Architect did a feature that discussed this in their Autumn 2006 issue when discussing possible futures for Tokyo in 2050 amidst Japan's shrinking population. It's an interesting read. Here's a link with a little bit of info from that issue: http://www.japan-architect.co.jp/english/2maga/ja/ja0063/mainfr.html

Yeah, maybe every person on the planet will only realize the necessity of green constructions only after global warming has result in disastrous accident such as this.

I do hope though, that our country leaders would be wiser than our average joe and start to invest very very heavily in green buildings.

Ahh, that place seemed miyazaki style to me. Those buildings that you might see in one of his movies.

Anyway, one place that comes into my mind that resembles this place, its gotta be Venice. With all the canals that serves as roads, people in Venice travels in boats called 'Gondolas' to get around the city. Just like what the tram is doing in the picture above.

Danny, you might wanna visit Venice while you can, because I heard that due to global warming, the rise in water level might sink Venice pretty soon in the near future.

I think i recognize the artist who made this ultradetailed art...

It's Imperial Boy, aka Teikoku Shounen.

I have an illustration book detailing all of the best Asian artists drawing Manga art, and he is featured in the book.

The title of the book?
"Comic Artists Asia" Compiled by Rika Sugiyama & published by Harper Design International.

The book features the best artists from Japan, China & Korea.

Those who love manga illustrations should get this book, as it contains artist profiles and lots more.

It's more of a night theme, lots going on and very warm colours. It's one of my favourite desktops along with that lush green water city up there.
