Human Rights in Japan

(Japan(195)
Wed 2008/10/29 22:22
So you must have heard many laws being passed to make it legal for gay couples to marry but leave it to Japan to take it a step further - a petition will be submitted to the Japanese government upon the collection of one million signatures asking for law to be passed making it legal to marry a two dimensional character.

The petition is filled under Human Rights and can be seen online here.

The online petition comes with the following:-
We don't have interest in the 3D world. If possible, I want to become the husband of a 2D character. Does not look like this matter can be solved with today's science and technology so at least make it legal to marry a 2D character. If this law is passed then I want to marry Asahina Mikuru...
Via Itai News and also covered by Sankaku Complex, Alfa, Nekoare, Oshietekun and 7000 other otaku site owners who are excited about this news ^^; Hmmm, lemme submit one to make it legal to marry a figure as this will be closer to fulfilling the otaku dream. If I was not married I would choose Fauna as my figure bride and probably Haruka from Minamike to be my 2D bride. Image from Gelbooru.

What a surprising article.

In response to Patrick Tan in Malaysia, I find that sweet and a nice consolation to any relationship. This can only be possible in conditions like Anime/ TV entertainment orientated individuals. Since I'm a guy, I'd have my tsundere feel like Eureka/ Anemone, since I idolize Renton Thurston.

Does it limit to only 1 2D character to be married???

Hoping we can build a 2D harem ^_^

How about the problem of a few people marrying the same 2D character?

Will the couple who get married first own the marriage right of the 2D character after they both married? so that other's can't marry the same character.

Then the question of copyright laws comes into play. If a 2D figure is copyrighted to that company I guess no other person could own them. And if the 2D are considered for humans rights you'd have to get rid of copyright I guess because wouldn't it be like owning a slave or something?

One of the first thing that came to mind too.
They have to deal with the company, artist and so on.

If they really want to marry something "2D" then they'll need to have their own "2D" wife made for them instead of using characters like "Mirai Suenaga", "CCS Sakura", "Strike witch girls" etc.

but i still did feel it's kinda odd to "legally" marry a 2d character even if i wanted it so much.
And even if the laws got passed, isn't this kind of thing would affect japan's population growth?
i mean i heard they got problem with it now....
what if a lot of the population decided to marry 2d instead of 3d?or do you have to be married to 3d first then after that you're allowed to marry 2d?

Wonder what will the 2d characters do if they are alive?
Object? Fight for their rights? The 2d characters have their couples too.

Whats up next? Marrying inanimate objects?
Marrying animals is done or so I've seen in those chinese period dramas.

you cannot marry them... unless they are 18 or in some countries 21 right? so if they(2D girls) are created just like recently they are considered minors right?

Further more... they cannot agree... since a marriage is a consensus of 2 being to live together legally... but the 2d girls cannot agree to the marriage unless their story boarder/creator agrees to it right? AHHHHH this is frustrating me!!! Can it happen! Can I finally marry Female Ranma at last!

Although an interesting topic to talk about, or even name who you'd marry.
But on a serious note, what would be the point of this?
Being married to a fictional character has no standing, other than title.
What can you possibly benefit from marrying a fictional character? Happiness? If so, do you really need society's legal stamp of approval and acknowledgement?
--
Now, if this was about a marriage with an AI, there may be room for discussion.
But, we'll have to save that for another day.

The more people signing this, the more important it is to not allow it. Japan is already fighting a battle to get more babies, so marriage without the intention of children should be outlawed.

It would be interesting if being single were outlawed too. Imagine arresting all single people and putting them on correction facilities and the only way to get out is to marry onesome they find in there. I don't know about happiness, but it would likely increase the number of children XD

As for marrying a 2D character... never really thought about it. I guess a good candidate would be Eruruu from Utawarerumono. She is really cute and acts nicely. I guess she would also be a good mother (this is actually something I consider in 3D girls). However I don't think she will give me anymore children than any other 2D character, so I guess it just wouldn't work out :(

One thing I am curious about.... if it is illegal to have more than one wife/husband at a time.... how about when you can marry 2D characters? Can 2,000 guys all marry the young lady above? If not, who decides who can marry her? Her creater? And I don't even want to start trying to figure out inheritance...

So if a 2-D character is already married, could that 2-D character be chosen as someone else's "significant other"? I sense too many laws and issues that would come from this.

I don't know. Maybe one day when technology is more advance and 2-D characters have a "personality" per se, then I could see this as semi-viable. But I don't see this happening right now. (Although, I would probably fight with Danny over Haruka. ^^; )

Dropping computers, starting all over again at Journalism
Just read about this on Sankaku Complex... kinda off-topic, but one of the things I like here in DC is that there's not Japan or japanese bashing because of stuff like this.
Kinda tired of reading comments like "Japanese shure are weird" and similar stuff on other blogs... like Kotaku.

I'm pretty shure I heard of cases in western countries of people wanting to marry computers or videogames... anyone remember these?

Anyways, yep, definitely weird, but not a japanese exclusive. I'll take it as a joke. And I'll marry Taiga. XD Also, they should go ahead and approve poligamy too... this way 90% of Otakudom will all be able to marry Kona-chan, even though I also think it's wrong, since Kona-chan is Kagamin's only

Utter absurdity, lol. They say they don't have interest in the 3D world, yet they want to bring fictional characters into the 3D institution of marriage? If you don't have interest in 3D reality, then draw yourself as a 2D character and keep your "marriages" within the 2D fantasy world... Duh, problem solved. ^.^

How would age of consent factor into this ?
Are the 2d characters eternally based on the age appeared ?
Or would they be based off age they were first drawn or trademarked ?

And how would you even get the consent ?
Would it have to be from the creator ?

If they are allowed to be married, then I guess they should be treated as citizens with equal rights (at least the ones "born" in Japan). This means that they have the right to state their opinions as well. They should also be able to vote and I can't wait for the 2D politicians to show up.

... Continuing with my previous comment. I'd like to add; I'd like a tsundere, Eureka/Anemone type of girl. The personality and achievement to surpass physical attraction is ideal for me. I have no need for 2D girls. I only seek the portrayal of that character important in order for me to seek the answer for my present situation.

OMG! what would the world be >.< ...

i'm not interested in marrying any 2D character...

btw this was crossed in my mind... marriage is accepted if both say "i do", didn't your marriage with 2D character become 1 sided "i do"?

True...they can't really accept.

What are the laws concerning polygamy in Japan? Using Mikuru as an example, many would want to marry her but she can only have one husband.

There would be a shortage of 2D girls....

no! I'd rather the 2d marry a real person. hahahah. which would mean the 2d girl will have to find a way to become real. LOL

I don't think it's right. I think gay marriage should be allowed but marrying things which are not alive doesn't seem right. Next, will people wish to marry their pets?

Marriage between humans and products of human imagination would never work because it has really limited responses...unless the creator is involved....I sense copyright problems on the horizon if this passes...

Since poligamy is illegal in japan (i think) then it would be an OTAKU BATTLE to decide which otaku who have right to marrying a 2D character. For example, OTAKU BATTLE for marrying... lets say... Sanya..? (And possibility a blood bath battle will occure) XD

But... even i love 2D girl so much, i still prefer 3D for my waifu... :)

If they're the perfect man character that can cook for me I'm fine with that. Maybe the otakus need to learn more programing skills and create a game for the Wii where they can interact with they're 2D spouses. OH HO HO NAUGHTY.

I think you should have permission to marry someone's character. I'm an artist and writer, so I have a deep connection with my characters; they are like an extension of myself. I'd feel somewhat violated if someone married my character without my consent.

This will be some huge polygamy XDD I wonder how many husbands would have someone like Haruhi, Feito or Nanoha.
Well then, thinking about safety I won't choose Feito or Shana. Maybe Tomoyo or Kotomi. Or Maria, or Matsuri... wait she's not even a human. This could be another problem XD

This is way too weird for me. Oh and I could have sworn that someone wanted to marry a voice. Not a person. Not a person. A voice.

Oh wait. I fall into one of those cases. 8 years ago or so, I wanted to marry Hayashibara Megumi-san's voice. Ha ha ha! Boy, I sure was quite the renegade back then. Well, I now find that too weird as well.

It's stupid...BEYOND stupid actually.

IE crashed T_T;....Ate my message.

1. You can not have intermite relations with a 2D character. (Unless you are some sicko with a pillow or whatever)
2. You can't go to the movies with a 2D character.
3. You can not have a romantic dinner with a 2D character.
4. Encouraging pedo activy MUCH! (How many high school characters are there)

I mean a lot of characters I like are "mature" aged men, but there are acceptions to that...Like I like Nagi Souichiro, I'm older then him by a few years, while I'm sure people don't see much of a problem with a 17 year old and a 23 year old going out...But what about those 15-17 year old characters that some 30+ year old likes...SICK!....

This is a pretty screwed up case. What would you do after marrying a 2d character? I'm already pretty sad that some of my favourite anime/manga characters have been used in degenerating doujin, but this is going too far!

Yeah, what profit would I have if I marry a 2D character? Boast about it?
I wouldn't be surprised if people want to marry a plant or who-knows-what-else? Now, a animal - I understand(though this will be zoophily)

*****
   Here's a joke:
 >>>>> A guy goes to a doctor and tells him that he likes to plug animals. The doctor asks him what gender does he prefer - male or female. The guy yells:
- Well, of course female! What kind of sick and twisted man do you think I am!?

Assuming that the character is popular the party would be engaged to multiple spouses Also, so characters might be under the legal marriage age too.
