Suenaga T-shirts

(Anime(216)
Wed 2008/10/29 09:46
First time designing T-shirt layouts which is why some of these mockups look odd ^^;
I'm working with a certain figure company to help produce the up n coming official dannychoo.com merchandise.
The T-shirts will be the type of quality you get from Cospa so they should last quite a bit - my Haruhi and Idol Master silkscreen shirts have lasted a few years with no fade of color or stretching. As soon as I get the designs done they will print up some samples using the 4 color silk screen method and another method which I cant remember.

Out of these designs, which *layout* do you prefer the most? If you have any mock ideas then let me know - you can grab images from Mirai and haruka-chans page.
Currently have no plans to print any color apart from black T-shirts.

I've also been told that the company can make some Mirai oppai mousepads too ^o^

Never figured designing a layout on a T would be hard at all until I actually thought about it ^^

Reminds me a bit of Azumanga Daioh with the word bubble, which is a good thing. It's very cute. Would like to see a blend of this with the picture on t-shirt d.

I like d from the proportions the best.Its the most symmetrical and tidy.The first one is imho the worst one because it looks unclean/chaotic if you know what i mean?

How about something more classical? like the Mirari Logo you swap on things we arent supposed to see on the heartarea(where else?^^) and your orange D in the neck area?
I prefer to wear something that wont make me look like a fool in public and yet is a sign for comrades.

Looking clean would be the most important to me. I'd prefer an option where everything is scaled down, or where the image covers only the chest area above the heart and not the entire thing.

I like none of the above. I'd rather don something more arty-farty and tailored toward urban hipsters rather than something blatantly corporate-looking. To don something that expresses my implicit self, emblazoned on my chest, a shield for my feeble heart.

I expected you to prod at my lack of a helpful response.  There are two ends to the otaku expression spectrum: the proud, and the ashamed.  You might now know where I sit ^^;

Sadly, I'm not a graphic designer. But immediately coming to mind, I would more prefer uncolored sketches or line art for Haruka and Mirai, maybe even having one on either side. As for attribution/identification, I'd also rather your dannychoo.com be in the same font/style as is your watermark, next to the orange [d], and not so big.

I think progressing with a Suenaga manga would lead to some characteristic catch phrases or more memorable ideas for them to express xD

I have a different idea, but i don't know if it will work.

Anyway: The idea is having the arms of the girl wrapped around the belly of the shirt and to the back, with the girl hugging and looking back blushing. (like real size but you can't see her legs or the end of the skirt).

You can put that D orange square at the back of the neck of the shirt, and the url in front at chest level.

I don't have much free time, but i can make some mockups later if you want to see the idea.

Yeah, Nanu has a point... But if we have to use the above, keep Mirai's image but delete her name(s), it's unnecessary. The dannychoo.com address should be the only text, if any. Hmm, or maybe something even simpler~ just the big orange "D" logo.

I like C and D the most since it looks the cleanest. Saying that, A looks a bit too much. Also, while I know this is just a mock up... but I think "dannychoo.com" needs to be stylized more and make a little smaller (more stuble) like in the style on the top of dc.com (or on chun's teeshirt). I don't like looking like a moving advertisement of any sort ^^;. I'm sure your final product will look a lot better/cleaner than the mockups. Looking forward to seeing them come to fruition! I would definitely order them! Especially the Mirai mousepad! (but why no plans even for a white teeshirt?)

C or D for me. But I agree with nanu, it looks so plain and 'corporate'. Well, I think it's better to remove the 'dannychoo.com' at the front and place it at the arm band or add your slogan with your site name like this: "Dannychoo.com Your portal to Japan!" (with a fancy font and also kinda tilted) or something like that. I could give more suggestions but I think I need to draw it(me not a good talker, lol) than to explain it.

Hmmm...only black? Wouldn't white be more suiting since standard stormtrooper armor is white?

Personally I like B, but D is also nice.

Will it be double-sided for the sisters? Mirai on top, Haruka on the bottom? er...I mean, front and back respectively.

Well, if you ever decide to make an ecchi shirt as well, you can use the first idea for the front image.

layout wise I would pick B or C as it has some space for adding the names without making it look cramped. But B and C have the legs cut off :( so i picked D because it looks best overal. I made a quick alternative where things would fit better making it look less cramped. I just played around with the size and placement as the layout was fine. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/SL-kun/2008Oct28182514_9630copy.png

Would these products be for sale all across the world or will they be limited to only a certain market (such as only Japan)?

Other than that, I really like B and D. I agree with what nanu said above about making them "hipster & artsy fartsy" but that can easily be achieved by playing around in photoshop and making it look like a duotone poster print or giving it some modern art treatments (ex: warhol). Even without that, printing it on different types of shirts or different colored fabric can do the same probably. Regardless I'll still probably pre-order one :3

I like all 3 actually, but if i had to choose 1 over the others i would choose C.

But I beg you to consider making XXL size shirts, since i can't wear any other anime apparel that do not exceed size XL. I really don't understand why they don't make more larger sizes for anime apparel.

I love the images on all the shirts, but the first three seem a bit cluttered.

Overall design-wise I think D works most effectively. I might actually reduce the art about 20% though. If you think about it, if a person has to come a bit closer to read the shirt they'll remember it more.

My opinions of the designs (or layout).
Option A: Too many faces! I think that it has to much area of focus cramped up o.o;
Option B: Feels one sided leaving a space on one side. But, it is fine. Many shirts are similar in layout.
Option C: This layout it good, featuring both mascots. Does it look better if they're more centred?
Option D: That Much like Option C, this and "C" would be very nice.

Have you thought of having the web address printed in the back of the shirt?
Say, Mascot at the front, web address at the back.

Sleeves is something you should take advantage of too. One side can hold your site Logo. Options C, D could have the site logo featured on one of the sleeves, giving the front of the shirt a cleaner look and the purpose of is the showing the mascot.

I like to try and design some mock ups based on my suggestions, is that feasible Mr. Choo?

I'm not a great designer, its something I want to get head start on.

Here is what I was suggesting, made clearer with visual. Something that I have mocked up with your graphics.
Take these into consideration?
- FRONT side: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b176/MapleStoryG/DC_T-shirt_design_Front.jpg
- BACK side: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b176/MapleStoryG/DC_T-shirt_design_Back.jpg

And another design thrown in. What do you members think?
- Black: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b176/MapleStoryG/DC_T-shirt_design1b_Front.jpg
- White: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b176/MapleStoryG/DC_T-shirt_design1_Front.jpg
Back could be like the one made, showing the web address.

Gordon is right about the graphic being long, low etc. It would be covered when tucked.

Designing T's with graphic have to bear in mind that they either make a full graphic shirt or halve graphical for tuck in or not...

even just the dc.com and the d symbol on chest area is enough for me to display my loyalty to your site. though it would look rather corporate, but i prefer that. orz. sorry, but danny, you have a diverse (or varied) audience of people visiting your site and no one design is going to please us all.

D looks the cleanest, but I like C and B too. Do you plan on making a couple of different sets of shirts (One of Mirai, one of Haruka, one of both of them together) in different poses (5-6 per set) to match the hinted-at figures? And can they ship to the US for cheap?

In my opinion, I think a good T-shirt design should be:

1) Simplistic in design
2) Focus on a single picture/logo/catchphrase/quote
3) Have minimal amount of text (It should not be text-driven. Unless it's something really funny, T-shirts are not meant to be read)

So with this in mind, I think C and D would probably be your best choices. If you want to aim for a clean look (which I think most people would probably prefer), cutting back on the text would be a good idea (1-2 lines max).

I like D, the image always seems to draw me in.. all the Mirai's >.<
The layout is pretty much there, as it is in your own vision. I guess typeface, layout.. T-shirt designing in general is tricky as different things appeal to different people.
Otherwise, I look forward to more merchandise!

I particularly like the sobbing with hankie Mirai, which is why I chose A.

It'd be good to have your dannychoo logo on there somewhere, so it could be placed on a sleeve or even back of the neck.

I hope there will there be a pre-order discount ^^;

I thought about the oppai mousepad and then it hit me. If there is a company where you can just give them an image and then they make an oppai mousepad with that image for you, then you can get one for specific purposes. I then came up with this scenario: A woman get an oppai mousepad of herself and in front of everybody at work, she gives it to her boss and says "now you can grope this one instead of me whenever you feel like it". That will for sure get the attention from everybody XD

As for a Mirai oppai mousepad: I hope it can be made durable enough for daily use. Would be fun to put it in a box and then write stuff on the box like "extra reenforced oppai suitable for excessive groping". Hopefully the colours will not fate either.

I have the impression that Danny have contacts that could make this a reality. If we look realistic on it, then the most expensive part of a figure is to develop the production line. This means that you have to make a whole lot in order to make a unit price in a range that's suitable for normal people.

Maybe the whole T-Shirt thing is to see how big the Mirai/Suenaga demand is. For all we know it could be high enough to pay for a figure development.

I like C the best of the options.

Suggestions:
With B I would suggest moving the "d" logo and the non-site name text tot he left of the image as I think that would fit better given her posture with a straighter right-hand side and the elbow extended to the left?
With D how about having the figure the main image is holding actually be both sisters in a pose similar to C?

Easiest, and fastest is to use google, type in "T shirt Template" and you can find some basic ones, such as the one Danny has used.

I used Hlj.com to get me shirt, though I had to do some minor editing like making a dark grey top instead of jet black ^^;

While I do like some of the suggestions people have given, and I thank those who took mine. Anyways, for fun, I decided to use another Mirai and make a shirt of my own. I probably need to rotate the text on the disc, but I decided to use Danny's "Mirai Mark" and just make that the entire shirt, with a more shocked Mirai. BCD are all fine with me. A feels a bit cluttered or maybe it is the awkwardness of "whitespace" (black t-shirt.. i know..)
the problem with A could be fixed if perhaps you center the larger Mirai image and maybe shrink her a little bit, then surround her with the six face shots. perhaps in two triangles pointing up or down or even like the text braces around the upper left and lower right. those might make it better but i'm just saying this off the top of my head.

haha, and i forgot another way would be just to do a single clean line along the bottom of the image with the face shots. that would get rid of the unwanted attention and focus the person to the main image then the six faces would show up afterwards and being in a single line underneath the image, it is a bit like a film reel or underlining.
