Looks like from the stats at Akihabara News that Blu Ray is kicking seven shades of shite out of HD DVD in Japan in terms of media players/recorders. How are these formats doing in your region?
Both HD-DVD and Blue-Ray didn't widely available yet here in Malaysia,so don't know much
yes.. i'm totally agree with you... and the number on their price tags are insane..
As far as I know, Blu ray is doin a little better here, but not kicking ass. Things are still up in the air. Seems there are more movies coming out on HD DVD though, but that is more studio support rather than consumer demand. HD DVD players are also generally cheaper than Blu ray players here. However, since Blu ray is included in PS3 they probably have a good user base, whereas 360 you have to buy it seperately.
Now Sony or Toshiba are siding with production companies for movies, so that they will be released exclusively in one format or the other. I dont want to buy either, until they make up their minds. They could sell tons (or tonnes) of these if they would just come to a final decision. Also, I dislike the name Blu-ray. HD-DVD sounds better, and less of a change for most people. Toshiba just came out with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray player I think.
Non-dicussion, really. Toshiba has all but given up on their own format (HD-DVD) already, PS3 will be a big console for the years to come. In 2 years from now, my guess is everyone will have a Blu_Ray Player at home...
In Taiwan, blu ray is doing good~ One of the reason is because Taiwan is the country that produce majority of blue ray in the market. In Malaysia, the market has not grow to that stage yet, as it is still to expensive for them.
As a Malaysian i cant agree more! Blu Ray is really too expensive for locals here! And yup Blu Ray is doing better than HD DVD becoz of Sony's PS3! It is easier to get BD then HD here!
If it's too expensive for Malaysians, it's even more expensive for Indonesians... >_< Neither blu-ray or HD-DVD is doing good here.
i heard its $25 in indo, not sure about it though
To be honest I have seen few Bluray or HD discs here in the south of Taiwan. From my observations (which is limited at best) neither format is widely available (discs not players).
I have the impression that in Malaysia, the only community who knows about these two formats are console gamers/ HDTV owners.
And to summarize everyone's comments, it's still too expensive here in Southeast Asia. Give it a few more years for the price to drop and allow it some time to gain popularity.
both still expensive, still stick with *normal* DVD >_>
I think people in europe prefer HD-DVD over BR.
Actually, from Sales numbers, Blu-ray is beating HD in europe as well. Not by as much as other regions but it's still in the lease. Players is a little murkier...
There's no preference between blu-ray and hd-dvd here in Europe, both dvd types are being sold but one thing I know.....many people here are saying that blu-ray already won this "pseudo" war and who says it are the companies behind the hd-dvd.
err... there's no numbers for the y-axis?
LOL I have noticed it too I wondered since they didn't put in the values, it could be an abnormal growth in numbers. Since only the distance between colored lines indicate the difference. Although the true differences may not be as indicated due to the lack of aforementioned values. Anyways I think BR is selling better here in Florida too, their selection at Target is greater as well, which always mirror demand.
True, they could just be 1 unit and 2 units. The great disparity between them could be very small actually.
Their growths though, could be observed clearly in the graph, where blu-ray has outgrown HD-DVD.
Both are doing bad here. Even if Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD by 10 times, DVD outsells Blu-Ray by 10 times The PS3 is doing bad. Sales of HD-DVD players are ahead this year if you don't count PS3... but that's not a valid comparison.
In local stores that have the new formats, I see more variety of HD DVDs. There are Blu rays, but barely a handful.
seems about the same here.. i read some places blue ray is outselling hd by 2 to 1.. mainly to ... you guessed it.. PS3.... the smartest decision made by sony to get there format out there in millions of homes.. as i've said before.. microsoft would have to make a 8th generation platform to compete witht the ps3.. especially in the coming years wihen dvds reach there game limit and game companies will switch over. he he..knew i bought one for a reason other than gundam games :D
It seems that blue ray is doing better than HD-DVD in the USA. I'm just sticking to DVDs for now though. Also, the PS3 is a blue ray player. If it can play Blue Ray than it's a player so don't say it doesn't count.
In general terms, overall Blu-ray is winning by a big margin, but ppl are not willing to rule HD-DVD out quite just yet because of 2 things. 1. It's cheaper to produce and players are much cheaper. If china manage to make a dirt cheap version, then Blu-ray is going to take a beating, even with the PS3. (I also think that blu-ray is a major handicap for the console in terms of upping the cost, but it'll probably bear fruit as the storage capacity is massive! Blue dragon, 3 DVDs WTF??) 2. The porn industry hates both formats but favours HD as there are some members of the blu-ray camp who do not want porn on blu-ray. And porn is a Big decider in format wars, Just ask VHS!!! At the moment, HD is looking bleak, but if it can last, then I think it'll give a good fight back... And prolong this format war for even longer than is neccessary!
Oh god, the DRM! The rootkits! I can see the future already.
both Blu-ray and HD-DVD is not much widely available here and both formats are very expensive so i can't much say on the race of both formats lol
i have seen blu ray movies been sold in shops in singapore but not HD DVDs. normal DVDs are still the best selling as it's much cheaper.
There are actually DH DVD here in Singapore, I have seen some at Music Junction..
It's gonna be a long time until I get a Blu Ray. It's just quite expensive and I wouldn't want to invest in the disks to make the most of it either.
It's hard to say really... there are some movies that are available exclusively on Blu-Ray and some only available on HD-DVD. They're both around the same price and usually $10 more expensive than normal DVD. I'd say the DVD is growing more than this next-gen format. Oh and people can watch HD-DVD on their Xbox 360 no?
You need to buy the add-on HD DVD drive to view HD DVD movies on the 360. It's now at $180 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-HD-DVD-Player/dp/B000JHO4L0
And even then, the HD-DVD add on for the 360 is DISGUSTING. Literally, it is an avoid at all costs. It's got negative reviews all around. Sad, because I'd have considered buying one for my 360 if it wasn't for the negative press reviews :(.
Actually the Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on is fantastic. It's the 360 that sucks. It wasn't designed for HD-DVD playback, so it was tacked on at the last minute, but the drive itself worked amazingly when it was plugged into my PC with PowerDVD Ultra HD. Also, the 360 isn't really as bad as people say. Unless you an absolute top of the line 1080p LCD TV you really aren't going to see any difference. All that having been said, I sold it anyway and bought an LG GGC-H20L. It plays both HD DVD and Blu-Ray for only $300. I'll take a PC interface over some half-functional, convoluted attempt at a menu system any day. It's available at NCIX here, if you want to check it out; http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26553
So, Blu Ray Eroge anyone? ^^;
Blu Ray players are still very expensive here in Holland, so at this moment Blu Ray is far from popular in my region. Can't say that HD DVD is über popular here as well.
You'd figure with that name, "Blu Ray" would be the hi-def DVD version of Betamax.
Most likely most/part of that surge is the incress in sales of the PS3 as that counts a Blu-Ray player. If I remember right the PS2 was the most common DVD player in Japan for a while.
Blu-Ray here in the States beat HD-DVD in movie sales consistently w/ a recent 3:1 in sales last week according to NPD. People always say "but the NPD doesn't include Walmart sales." IMO that doesn't change anything since Walmart sells both BD and HD discs. There's already porn in BD as well as HD. Software selection at retail chains always have 2-3x more blu-ray selections over hd-dvd. Also, prices for standalone bd players are dropping a lot, approaching prices of HDDVD players. The cheapest HDDVD player costs roughly $90-100 but take in mind that only outputs at 1080i. You can get a cheapo $20 regular dvd player that upscales and outputs at 1080i. An HDDVD player that outputs at 1080p costs close to $199, while the cheapest BD player is a Samsung currently at $270. All BD players that I'm aware of output at 1080p.
Most Blu-Ray players, until recently, only actually supported 1080i at 30fps. 1080p could only reach 15fps. One thing that strikes me as a little odd is that Blu-Ray, which is apparently outselling HD DVD is searched for far less on the internet. http://www.google.com/trends?q=Blu-ray%2C+HD%20DVD Also, Blu-Ray, though having more actual storage space is technologically inferior and very costly to manufacture. HD DVD is backwards compatible with the DVD specification, so most tools used for DVD Authoring can still be used for HD DVDs. They are also much cheaper to manufacture because they have a much higher failure tolerance than Blu-Rays which very often fail to author correctly and even when they do are much more easily damaged than HD DVDs because of the different laser size. All of that basically means that HD DVD disks can afford a price drop much sooner than Blu-Ray can. Whether that advantage is taken or not is a matter yet to be seen. But It looks to me like Toshiba is running out of time.
naw i like HD DVD it's cheaper and has good quality although Blu Ray it's better i can't afford it..... (sad)
They sell both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies here, but HD-DVD players seem to be quite rare, except the one which you can have with Xbox 360. There is at least one Sony Blu-Ray player sold here, but it's quite expensive (about 500 €), so not so popular yet. I think PS3 is the most popular HD player here at the moment, and because of the new, cheaper model, sales are surely going to get better. I read, that there's a new HD player coming from LG, which can play both formats, but there are some bad points in it too. It can't play HD-DVD menus and normal CDs. But if the price was low enough, I think I could buy something like that after getting a new tv.
