Chinese Food in Japan

Some Chinese food for lunch - 1,120 yen. But the Chinese food here has been modified a lot to match Japanese tastes which is why I miss Chinese food back in London. To get "better" tasting food, I need to travel all the way to China Town in Yokohama - but the taste depends on the chef even though its the same restaurant.

The Chinese food in Seattle and LA was great too, many folks told me that San Fran has great Chinese food but when I visited during my times at Amazon/Alexa, I found the food to be rather plain - maybe I just went to the wrong place?

The best Chinese food I've had is not in Shanghai or Beijing but in Hong Kong.

Were was the best Chinese food you've tasted and where should folks go to get decent Chinese food in your region?

A taste where if not matched then the restaurant quickly goes out of business - the best way I can describe it ^^;

Its kinda the same here in the States. Alot of the dishes here were invented for American tastes. As far as I know, General Tsu chicken wasn't originally found in China.

penang is supposely the chinese food hawker haven of malaysia.
still a bunch load of roadside hawker stalls that sells good food, such as hokkien mee, wantan mee, asam laksa, char koay teow bla bla bla...
but lately i guess the younger generation has decided not to pick up the skills from the parents and thus more and more good food are disappearing fast.

The best one that i ate is one here in São Paulo, on a place in the 'Liberdade'-Japanese District-. I dunno the name coz don't hv a name in the entrance. They have a salt water aquarium in the entrance.

The place looks a little dirty, and sometimes they look an abandoned restaurant, but their food are really awesome. They try to put the things very near the original, since the family that run the restaurant are all from China.

Hey Danny, can you put on posts or maybe i should ask by mail the address for those places that you eat, I want try it too in my trip to Japan ^-^.

Chinese food in Sydney is fantastic. No different to what you can get in HK.
The only different thing is being price and avaliability. You can't get a bowl of wonton here so easily for AUD$3-4 equiv like you can in HK.

From what i've learnt, there are 2 major places that HK ppl migrate to. Either Australia or Canada.
I really wonder why that it's so...

That's true now that I think about it - I'm one of those who went to Canada. I know friends who moved to Australia, and one in particular who moved to Australia, *then* Canada. :P

I'm not sure about the Chinese (or rather Cantonese) food around here, since I don't go out too often, but from what I know we definitely have better choice, taste and value here in Toronto than most places around the country.

I hope I can go to HK some time. There is some pretty excellent Chinese food right here in Chicago, though. The majority of the Chinese restaurant owners in Chicago are from Hong Kong. You can get both the Americanised stuff and also the real deal. There are great places in Chinatown that have two menus-- one for the Americans that's written in English and another one that has at least 4 more pages, written all in Chinese. I like going there with my Chinese-speaking friends, and letting them just order whatever they think is good.

The choices in New York are plentiful, but here in Japan I do have trouble finding Chinese Food that fits my American perception of "Chinese Food." I hate to say it, but I went to Panda Express in Kobe not too long ago just to satisfy my urges. It's not very good, frankly, but it's American-style and that's what I needed.

Best tasting Chinese food? Home. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants around but most of them are oriented for speed and profit. As a result, the rice boxes you get are usually substandard. The problem I face most of the time is oily food. I worked part time at a Chinese restaurant for some festival and lets just say, I didn't want to see fried food for the next few days. Their best seller was all deep fried stuff. That said, not all restaurants are bad. It all depends on whether the head chef is in or not. The quality of the food should explain everything. If you want good Chinese food in Toronto, you have to find someone who has really been around. Befriend someone who frequently eats out and they will gladly recommend several places.

I think it's hard for a Chinese restaurant with Chinese taste in Japan to succeed since there are so many good Japanese restaurants in Japan so that's why they modify their taste a lot.  Since I don't live in Japan but just visit there all the time, I would rather eat more Japanese food than Chinese food so I won't need to complain about modified taste ^^;

I live in LA area and since I tasted many great Chinese food so can't handpick the best place >_<

Shanghai is not a Chinese city - it was built as a western port less than 200 years ago hence it has no local Chinese flavour of its own - perse.

I found that when i was there, the small restaurants did much better cooking than the larger, fancier ones. Food Stalls on streets also had incredible flavours but the health risk is ...

I specifically got immunized vs all the Heps and assorted diseases before I went so I could eat at my leisure.

My hometown has LOTS of chinese immigrants, so I had the pleasure to have both restaurants with "adapted" chinese food and the original stuff.

They are almost like two completely different cuisines.

Generic adapted chinese restaurants in Brazil has mostly matsuri-like food... chinese bread, that chicken with peanuts thing, chop suey rice and other stuff that mixes veggies, noodles and some meat.

The traditional restaurant has so many delicious different stuff... plates with duck meat, chinese vegetables, chinese fish... the sauce has a completely different taste. Dunno how to explain, but when I go back to my hometown again I'll have lunch there and take some pics.

Hong Kong food is quite bland and tasteless in most restaurants. Only some of the upscale restaurants match my taste at all.

I was born in China, and travel there often. My favorite food comes from three places: Sichuan, Anhui, and Hubei provinces. Authentic Chinese food from those areas are absolutely amazing.

Cantonese cuisine is far too gentle in taste. I can barely even taste most of the food ^^;

I like eating Chinese foods. My favorites are Chinese fried rice, wanton noodle soup and Chinese fish fillet. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants here in the Philippines. It's probably because we have close ties with China in the past and today and the fact that a lot of Filipinos have Chinese blood like me. If this is the case, I think that Chinese foods here taste like authentic Chinese food in China. I don't really now. I haven't been to China yet x_x

Thank God, in Portugal (or at least in the area of Porto) the chinese food is good and pretty much sticks to the conventional preparations.

My favorite restaurant around here is an oriental one (it has japanese, chinese, korean and some thai food) is owned by a chinese family and is called Furosato (home away from home?).

Last time I went I ate some Teppanyaki and I tought it was pretty close to Chow Mein... Was it supposed to?

Chinese cuisine has a lot of great foods, but one of the most prominent is the Xiao Long Bao. Definitely unique and tasty!

Come to Singapore man! Food haven!! Haha.

Chinese food is everywhere. From very cheap to very expensive. Those who come to our sunny (but very hot and humid) island should try the hawker centres (outdoor, sheltered food courts w/o the aircon). Have tsz char (a few dishes w rich / noodles). Cheap and GOOD!

There's a lot of Chinese restaurants here. The ones in the upscale casinos are actually the worst places. There's a Chinese and Korean district down here, and they have some -really- good Korean food. I haven't stopped by the Chinese places yet. Even in this town, it's really hard to come by good Japanese food. Can't wait to finally go to Tokyo... all your pictures of food are making me want to jump on a plane right now. :]

For those planning to go to Hong Kong, avoid tourist-orientated areas such as Tsim Sha Tsui and go for the restaurants in more local areas or areas highly recommended by the locals, and you won't go wrong. This is quite true for pretty much any other places and countries.

Born and raised ABC in San Francico always heard of great food 'back home'. finally got my change during Christmas and New Years 2007-2008. fabulous food every where (Tsim Sha Tsui), but it seemed that truly original dishes don't exist (dishes i had heard about when i was a kid). instead 80% of the time was really about great American values (KFC, McD's, Starbuck's, Circle K, etc.). even went all the way to Aberdeen (Jumbo was a bust). it seemed like peppered or chili-ed food was the standard fare everywhere. the real pleasure was taking the big chance on the mid-night street vendors at 2 a.m. in the morning! that' eatin'. yum.

There are a lot of places to get Chinese food around where I live, but I can't say if any of them are better then any other. They all taste the same, and not very authentic, from what I've heard. I did go to a nice place in California.

well, I'm Hakka people there, I've no comment about sweet Chinese food there because usually Hakka people loves saltier flavor food.

I think Cantonese people love sweet food, isn't it?
