A monk tried to burn a bees nest with a bamboo stick lit with fire. The bees didn't quite like that and attacked the monk causing him to flee and drop the bamboo stick. The fire from the bamboo spread throughout his shrine and left behind it 130 sq meters of ash. The monk suffered burns but as you can see is still alive. One of the comments at Itai News is "jigo jitoku" [自業自得] which is used when a person brings calamity upon himself for his own doing - I learnt that word from the manga Ranma and is often used in anime.
why didn't he call a specialist? or buy some bug-bombs and go bio-warfare on me like the rest of us.
Peace be with you?
It could have been worse. At least he wasn't attacked by flaming bees.
Yea, lucky monk...
Indeed, however the bees were attacked by a flaming monk.
Bee? is dangerous, but flaming bees? Ouch!
Hm, flames are probably bad for bee's wings... So no flying for long:P
then its kamikaze attacks all the way
I guess the closest concept to jigo jitoku in America is the Darwin Awards, where they showcase people dumb enough to accidentally kill or render themselves infertile in entertaining ways, thereby aiding evolution by removing themselves from the gene pool. Trying to kill bees with freakin' fire is dumb as bricks, but isn't quite funny enough to make the Darwin Awards.
Removing bee hives with fire is quite normal and actually really easy. I've done it. But something is definitely wrong with that guy...
Yea, he did it wrong. He burned his home instead of the bee's.
Huh...well now that's a kick in the pants...
I was reading this story yesterday. It's unfortunate yet a bit funny. He was actually trying to get rid of a nest of hornets, likely the Asian Giant Hornet which are prevalent in certain regions of Japan, and not bees. In actuality the monk was lucky to get burns instead of being stung as the venom from this wasp proves to be deadly especially if in multiples let alone a whole hive. Tenbatsu, tenbatsu, tenbatsu... Too bad for him though
heaven's punishment? I can only assume that's what this is, even though I can't see the kanji for it.
Oh yeah, putting fire in a bee/hornet/whatever nest with fire-in-a-stick. Something stupid I tried sometimes as a kid. Yeah. But even though, I remember quite well that I always took precautions for: 1- stopping the fire from spreading 2- having a safe place to hide
Mmm...didn't this happen last week? I think I saw it somewhere. Pity this happened.
it's almost like bad karma ^^; him trying to destroy the nest and end up his home being destroyed O_o
just read what Danny wrote a bit more carefully, "jigo jitoku" sounds a lot like "you reap what you sow"
Ok, that monk has never played Zelda Twilight Princess ^^
Trial by fire? Purified through the crucible? Hope it doesn't leave permanant scarring.
I thought monk will never kill...
Now you know why XD.
Oh I remember reading about this, I think it was hornets and not bees. Just pointing it out since hornets are alot nastier as far as I know.
I wonder what kind of bees attacked him.. I have some bees myself :)
Now that everyone is mentioning hornets, that little bug in the "REALTIME" box looks more like a hornet than a bee.
that doesnt look fun :(
There's a reason why pest controllers have a job: they'll do the job right whereas you will only muck it up. The same goes for plumbers and other jobs which you are tempted to DIY.
LEAVE SHISHIO ALONE
hahaha! looks like beaten by kenshin!
I Kenshin, the bishounen samurai, have defeated Shishio Makoto, with my new attack, The Bee Bee Hirameki Kuzu Bee-Ryusen!!!
Killing bees with fire is best done if you have gasoline or some other highly flamable liquid as well, that way the bees actually all die at once instead of killing a few and getting the rest singed and really pissed off. Also, spraying gas on the nest first will make them woozie. But with this guy's luck, he'd have just lit the shrine on fire anyways, just without the bee stings. Of course, the best way is to just gas them with raid or something if they are near a structure. I guess my being partly raised in the countryside is showing, lol, I was taught how to do these kind of things for myself.
Well Danny, you obviously garner more attention than me. When I posted this in member news I only got like 14 replies, 3 of which were mine. ^^;
Your photo has him wrapped up like a mummy though - it really did resemble Shishio. ^^; This picture shows him with the top of his head exposed, so I guess he's getting better?
I hope he does get better. I'd hate to have to utter 「南無阿弥陀仏」 more than once this year.
Have no idea how I missed that one ^^;
If you look at the bottom right corner it's as if there's a body lying face down on the ground. Closer inspection reveals that it's actually, or rather appears to be, a concrete sewage pipe and a blue plastic covering placed near the roots of a nearby tree.
Another Candy girl murder case? XD
We may need to contact L for this case.
But what if Light/Kira killed L?
That was weird, I thought he would call some anti-bee-squad or something like that, surely in Japan there must be some kind of specialists
hahahahhhahahahaha evil monks never prevail!!!
Good for him that he's still alive. I wish him good recovery. But when burning a bee's house, of course expect them to attack you.
I'm surprised he didn't expect divine punishment. 'sides, I thought monks weren't suposed to kill? Even stepping on an ant counts among the devout.
Aoch! That must have hurt! Here you're not allowed to exterminate bee nests, you have to call upon the fire department or a beekeeper who will remove and relocate the nest. (Due to the ciritcally important role bees play in pollinating.) Wasp or hornet nests on the other hand you are allowed to exterminate... however here too some specialist help is advised.
Oh my god this suck for him, I hope this guy will be better !
there's this saying - if you don't know what you're doing, dont do it. maybe the monk just learnt that through this ordeal.
Rough day indeed...
He looks less like Shishio in this photo. Looks like we don't need Kenshin anymore! XD
*puts long red wig away*
I, Kenshin, the bishounen samurai, defeated him off screen!!
Karma~~~~~~~~~~ in the works
Yup....Karmic Circle indeed...
bakkkkaaaa!
Wait a minute?? I thought monks weren't supposed to kill unnecessarily. Even insects. Anyway, in his defense I would have tried to get rid of them myself rather than spending money on a specialist, especially if the hive was small or if a specialist wasn't available.
He should have use his secret fireball technique to destroy the hive.
Well, I find that using vodka on them can make them drunk... don't know if that helps. Miracle of what the Mythbusters can make you learn when you watch their show.
That is teriable, A few frieds of mine could die from a bee sting with there sever allergies.
Isn't suzumebachi quite dangerous? Because that's what it says on the news. In english it's not "bees" it's "Asian giant hornet" or "yak-killer hornet". Guy was lucky to get out alive.
karma
He could have just left the bees alone...but no, he attempted to wage a war that he simply could not win.
