What is Art

Really nice find by Tenrou. Love the illustration work and appreciate this as a work of art.
But what is the difference between this illustration and this one - the latter available to view in public on posters and what have you.
OK- this one has a mini doughnut in her mouth but take that away and compare both images - I see two bare eyed women.

Original text from tenrou below.

Appearently, most people don't consider Japanese drawings of women art. It's considered POOOORRRNNNN.

I remember bringing Girls Bravo vol. 1 to read at school & during lunch, some idiot's like "IT'S PORN!" & I said to him "So what about Michaelangelo's "David"? Or the "Venus De Milo"? Or "The Birth of Venus"? THOSE are pics & STATUES of naked people & people consider those memorable pieces of art! What makes it different from this?!"

I can't really remember what happened after that, but I think I just walked away & he didn't mention it again.

Well I suppose the purpose of porn, and this picture, is to turn you on or arouse you. Whereas in those traditional pieces of art I dont think that is the artists objective.

Both are nude depictions of popular female characters, though one has more literary and artistic value than the other. Plus one is worth a lot more dosh than the other. ;)

Ugh...feel like critically analyzing these two images but am rushing a magazine. Maybe another time.

The difference is interpretation of body language. The people saying it's porn and not art disagree about the intent and arousal factor, but even that's subjective.

Nude paintings always be outrageous, but, in the case of human model painting (and taking note of the date from those paints) I think the meaning of each other, are very different. The first one, the doujin, ecchi, hentai, or any other name that it have, are for 1 basic purpouse, and that one was sell it and...use the hands. In the case of human models, I think the objetives were others. The quality, the perfect draw and painting, can be similar, but the meanings beacouse their were painted, 're totally different.

sometimes it's quite annoying when nobody tries to be thoughtful in claiming everything to be art.

Anyhow, eroge illustrations border porn and art and it's difficult to objectify entirely what art should and should not be. I think that we should take care in classifying things :P

For me, "art"is something I can stare at and learn a lesson from. Whereas illustrations, be it fan-service, fappable materials (okuza??), is just serving a purpose to see and admire and (wax)..

Oh, the lady in the link... lol... I believe drawing nude was considered as the artist's ability to draw anatomy in that time period. a test. And of cos, teh artists uses his creativity to make something dull, life like.

Hmmm... i guess both are art, both made by humans out of creativity and for a purpose. I guess it's just their purpose that differs from one another; this one for sexual satisfaction while the other(the linked one) is also maybe sexual but in a more philosophical way.

Hmm, I'm going to have to disagree with the statement that they're the same. I think theirs a difference between a sexual situation and just being nude. There are several reasons why this should be the case which are interesting, but I make the following case since I think it's relevant to the situation at hand.

Lumping them into one group is also bad for women rights, I read on your website that recently women's bare chest day occurred. That event is a protest against this type of thinking. Their cause is that breasts are not sexual objects, and shouldn't be treated as such. The comparison you make is of a woman preparing for hot relations to a naked female in a simple pose.

I consider both of them art.
The one presented above is considered to be art as entertainment.
Being that it is to bring out a particular emotion or mood in the viewer.
Whereas the painting provided through the link is one of communication.
There is a message behind the painting that was intended to reach the viewer of that time period.
I go by the following which I learned some time ago in a humanities class.
Art is considered art when:
-the creator's intent is to be art
-the viewer recognizes it as art (not perceives but acknowledges)
-the work itself creates/invokes an emotion or communicates a message to the viewer

So yea, I guess almost anything (or nothing) can be art.

Pretty much the difference is in what the snooty old people think. Art is pretty subjective and those old people made silly rules so that they could feel better about their opinions and ideas. Well something like that anyways.

I think both pieces would be considered art (especially under most legal definitions). I think the reason one is accepted as a work of art, though, and one is seen as porn lies in the reasoning behind why the art was created. What was the intention?

However, even this gets into squirrely areas when you think of things from a modern context. As an example, images of nude children is typically classified as child pornography. But, there are some photographers who take nude photos claiming that because their intention is to capture the human form, and not to sexualize it, what they are doing is art rather than porn. Surprisingly enough, many countries (including the United States), have allowed this form of photography as art (attested to by the number of public nudity sites in the U.S. that are legally allowed to run and post pictures, as well as art gallery displays of modern photography).

Thus, I think it ultimately lies in the intention of the piece (why was it created), and how that depiction comes across (is it sexual in nature, or just expressive). My thoughts, anyway...^_^

I agree with anyone who said both are art... What separates the two kinds of art is pretty simple, (i.e. how come one can hang on a wall in a museum or w/e and the other is limited to hentai lover's HD's and possibly walls? lol) the hentai is intended for dirty things! lol. While "real" art is intended to only show off the beauty, simplicity and form of the human body and world around us, not to pull on yourself with. :P

Hentai, none the less, is still an art-form. I'm not so sure if it will ever hang in a museum though.

To put it in a different perspective. Even among artists there is a distinction between what we would consider art and commercial illustration. There have been debates as to whether you would consider illustration or anything of the sort to be art. What I mean by art, is Fine Art. To make an analogy, say in music, it would be like comparing the song "Barbie Girl" by Aqua to say something written by say Bob Dylan. You can say they both required creativeness to produce their songs and one would be more commercially successful over the other but ultimately one would be highly regarded over the other. While I myself enjoy illustrations I wouldn't compare them to something like a classic. They are two different things with different intentions.

The word art has two meanings, one is "craft" or "skill" and the other is Art with a capital T, which derives from the first (since drawings and so on need skill to make) BUT in modern terms the concept is as important as the actual skill put in to make the artwork.

This picture is clearly art in the first sense. It might be considered Art in the second sense however the concept -- the idea it is created to convey -- is purely sexual and of no real interest apart from that.

It would be interesting to ask the original artist if he thinks it is a piece of Art and deserves to sit alongside nudes such as Lucian Freud's.

Both are art, certainly if they show mastery of the techniques used and/or evoke themes, emotions,...
That "Venus and Cupid" piece may be more widely acceptable now and seen as art but 500 years from now, so may this anime artwork... there's no accounting for acceptance and change of views over the years (centuries).

One's own opinion and view of art is always personal since you're looking at it through your own eyes and hence unique viewpoint.

Critics or people stating such contemporary art as this fanart of Louise isn't art but just vulgar sketches etc... is just elitist crap that you shouldn't believe. (Sorry for stating it so bluntly but it's a truth that must be said.)

Surely indeed due to modern reproduction techniques the commercial aspect of art distribution is exponentially bigger than hundreds of years ago. But don't be fooled, regardless of their talent, skill and great mastery, all those artists centuries ago also mostly produced art for purely commercial reasons. The audience able to financially sponsor art back then was much smaller than now, perhaps hence why such art is interweaved with an elitist air.

Well, yes, as we know, anime drawings are made much more automatically than classic painting and with less effort. It's not that it's not art in it's own way, but it's a different meaning for art. There's a distinction between "art" and "Fine Arts" (I think it's how they are called in English, in spanish it's 'Bellas Artes').
The last ones can be corrupted and be commercial, but that's where the good appreciation takes it's part.

Adding and judging from your statement, there is a simpler term for that post you have made there. For me, I think the works of art has various categories, and this posted art above is what you call art for the modern world, maybe insignificant or maybe not, it depends on what the outlook of the art or the person who is looking on the art, or far else the picture is just for entertainment. Complying on the art from the link, I'm an aesthete myself but by just looking on the picture there is significance, and inexplicable.

The simple fact that it came from the mind of someone qualifies both illustrations as art. In fact, every kind of expression through the 8 arts is art, it's just that some is crappier than the rest.

i had a lesson on this -.-"
and ya i definitely like this one more than the other~ lol
there's also another comparison--> real porno pic vs art pic (ppl would usually ask "wut is art" base on these 2 comparison)
and i think the conclusion of the lesson was... if it was demoted to soemthing else other than art --> its not art. So for example, you make an "art" but you use it for comercial needs or other needs, then it's no longer art.

Manga/anime art just seems prettier to me most of the time. And just as much work and heart goes into creating them.

But my art teachers still say its not good enough for class... that anime/manga is too same-y/similar/alike. Their probably is they are basing they're oppinion on a very small selection. They haven't seen/read nearly enough to make an informed oppinion....

In this particular case, the way both were made, the time, the effort, the period and value.

The painting could also have some background to it, since it was taken with real life models. And it was made to depict religious/cultural references.

But all in all, art is nothing more than a convention, specially nowadays.
Historically, it was really hard to make paints like that, and there weren't many artists out there talented enough to make stuff like that.

Could take months to complete something as detailed as that, and since there were no photos, paintings were the only way to have an image "immortalized".

Religious icons and historical settings were also valued, since they pretty much depended on the author's interpretation.

Art nowadays has taken a different meaning, and the value also can vary a lot. Nowadays, it's much more about the message it tries to pass than the quality itself.

But some will just say that art is dead...

That's a touchy subject, for me both are art, although the anime one tends more for the act of sex than the classical one but both show the naked body of a woman but as always the anime one is exagerated. Everything that is drawn is considered art no matter the subject, it's the same thing with figures, it's pure art because it's sculpted and it's not a toy with articulations although people tend to look at it as a toy because of it's cartoon look cause every time someone calls them toys I start calling Michael Angelo statues toys in giant mode, everything that is made by human hands resembling human or animal is considered art.

I think the idea of art depends on the individual, you can have two people look at the same picture and one person would see it as an art piece and the other might see it as not.

If it's painted so thick that it somehow is magically still visible after 100 years then it becomes a piece of 'art'. Seriously. That's pretty much the only definition museums seem to follow.

The difference is in how they're sexualized. The pic above, I mean, she's all wet in certain places and everything. It's clearly drawn to inspire certain...feelings. Although...one could argue that the particular painting you have pointed out is designed to elicit the same (based on the Latin inscription that accompanies it). But the female form, when painted during that time period (and surrounding centuries), was not particularly about sex, but about the form of the body.

Even if it was about sex, the main differences are time, and culture. I am sure there are plenty of areas, all around the world, that would let neither be publicly displayed.

Art? Yes to both, but the wet in certain areas, condom in the mouth and exaggerated features do lessen the credibility of the Louise Halevy piece. Nudity is about the only similarity I can see.

That doesn't make either less sexy, just sexy in different ways. Venus is like the first time you saw a naked woman's body, Louise is like the first time you had sex with a woman.

The difference is that society is bigoted towards things they don't fully understand (i.e. - ignorant). If you think about this concept, it extends well past the example given. What makes a t-shirt so "low class" as compared with a tuxedo? To some degree I feel it's a shallowness thing, but I think the majority of it is just the masses accepting something that a few have decided what's "good" or "acceptable". Everything's a little more diversified today with so much intercultural exchange and mass communication, but a lot of prejudices hold just the same. Well I spilled that rant out in under 5 min without thinking. ^^;

Its like a popular vote. If more people accept something, it remains a fact albeit an opinion to some. I believe the difference of classical and contemporary (latter placed within a subculture or anime), is the time they were made in. People made something visual for people to see and value and thats about it. You don't have eyes you can't see squat. So I guess nothing changes but the changes.

First I'd like to say, that whats in her mouth, must be a wrapped up candy or something, because that is way too small to be a condom.

Now to the subject. Art is simply a form of expression, it's no more complicated than that. What one sees as meaningful, they can project in any manner they see fit, thus creating art.
This image, just as much as the linked image, is art. The only difference is the world it was created in. As the world changes, so do peoples representations, though having the technologies of today, makes it more complicated to have work that stands out, the idea is no different than that of great artists during the rennaissance.
