Isn't anime such a cool subject to talk about? My first anime was when I was a wee little lad back in the UK - watched dubbed versions of Gatchaman known as "G-Force" in the UK. The first anime I watched in my late teenage years was the original Macross film dubbed in Cantonese - completely fell in lurve with Minmay and realized that I had a thing for 2D characters ^^; Gatchaman below. Minmay singing Tenshi no E no Gu below. Feel free to paste youtube urls of your first anime > http://jp.youtube.com/ To Karasu-kun and all - can we not forget to quote the source of any image posted - if you forgot then please mention so. Want to make sure we credit the source. Original text from Karasu-kun below.I finally got off my lazy butt and started cataloging all of my anime this weekend. As I was going through all of my stuff I started thinking about all of the series/movies/OAV I've watched over time, and how long I've been watching anime. I distinctly remember watching Sailor Moon before school during junior high, Akira with friends (the dub *shudder*), Ghost in the Shell, Tenchi Muyo, all the mid to late 90's standbys. The first real series to suck me in though, was Fushigi Yuugi. I'm not terribly fond of other Watase Yuu series, but FY instantly what drew me in, if it wasn't a little formulaic. Do you remember what your first series was, and do you regard it fondly looking back now, or would you be embarrassed to say you watched it/liked it now?
wow...my first anime...that was a while back...but i think it was Dragon Ball Z (dubbed version...), but i think the first anime that completely captured my attention was Gundam Wing...back when Toonami was a decent programming block...
Sadly that's same as me. DBZ is technically my first anime. After that I didn't see anything again until about junior year in high school. When a friend showed me Bleach. Eventually I progressed where I am today.
same here.
same with me, dubbed dragonballz from cartoon network
first anime for me was DBZ too. lol.. then it went on to Kindaichi (still nice), Slam Dunk (RAWR!!) and ...and.... that's all i think
DBZ for me too hurhur i used to remember watching it every saturday on channel 8, that is until i realised the manga was far ahead of the anime... ^^
DBZ was my first as well. After that Bleach and Naruto began to hold my attention. Once I found Genshiken, to-Love-ru, Ichigo 100% and Code Geass I was otaku before I knew it.
Add my name to the list of DBZ was my first anime. I had watched anime before then "Battle of the Planets" and "Speed Racer", but I didn't recognize them as anime. It was only until I watched DBZ on Toonami that I realized what I was watching was anime. Then it was all down hill from there (or up, depending). ^__^
I think the record of lodoss war along with Dragon ball, then DBZ are my earliest memories of anime. well of course I've seen cartoons n stuff when i was a kid too but those don't count :P oh and uh .. I'll admit it: sailor moon (and im a dude) then I kinda stopped watching anime on a regular basis till Naruto came along, then bleach .. then I started to pick up on any anime I could get my hands on!
same here.
My fisr anime was Doraemon when I was about three :3
Doraemon! I almost forgot about that one. Back when I was a wee child I'd watch the Chinese version with my cousins.
Doraemon too!
But the one that made the first big impression was SDF Macross dubbed in Chinese ...
Doraemon for me as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ykZUhypBLA
Doraemon for me as will too. dubbed in chinese. ^^;
doreamon when i was still in hongkong, proberly when i was like 4? and along with saliormoon. i usually watched wadever my sister watched.
Mine is doraemon as well but the first one that I've been consciously trying to watch would be Fate/Stay Night. I watch doraemon because.... I was still a kid at that time LOL. Still, doraemon is kinda entertaining but you'll start wondering what will happen if some bad guys get some machines that can stop time. Even polices can't do anything right? xD
Dubbed in Malay here. They sound like x_x
If I remember correctly, its my first too ^^
Ohoh i saw the Chinese version once! Doraemon = Ding Dong? :O
小叮当 xiao ding dang. years back it was standardised to Doraemon.
Same here I think (unless I unconsciously watched something else), it was an English dub though.
Doraemon is probably my first anime...
I watched in japanese when I was still little an lived in tokyo...I even finish entire series of sailor moon when I was 4. good dayS back then until now...lol then there pokemon got huge popular.
Same here~, Actually i saw doraemon in chinese my whole life!
I will say Gantz so yeah recent otaku although I'm not counting captain tsubasa and dragon ball wich I watched as a kid.
Probably Sailor Moon when I was 3 or 4 years old. It was dubbed TV version with gender changes and all. :P
Hahaha, sailor moon was my first anime also XD, dubs way back when were not to bad.
Grave of the Fireflys was my first as a kid i didnt know what the whole movie was about till i saw it a second when i grew up and it made me sad this was also when Sailor Moon was shown on TV Tuxedo Mask was so fn cool!!!
same here. that or pokemon or DBZ
Our's didn't have the gender changes but Sailormoon was my first anime
DOREAMON! I read that when I was like 6. I remember going to the UCSD Library to borrow more DOREAMON ! >:] Although I couldn't understand any of it because it was in Japanese and I didn't know it.
Ghost in the Shell the movie and then Akira. When it comes to a series it was probably GITS & Blue Submarine. Then I dove straight in to fansubs and have consumed all Anime worth watching! Literally almost a terabyte of video! I had seen Macross "Robotech" years before but it hadn't piqued my interest, it was too dated at the time.
Same here. At some point, I realized I liked the anime art style/everything else and decided to start watching stuff. Didn't really know what was good, so I watched the original GITS movie(not a mistake; excellent film). Akira followed, then....naruto *GASP*. I liked it, but the vastness of anime on the internet introduced me to other stuff and saved me from naruto fandom. I almost became a narutard o.O
Ghost in THe Shell and then Neon Genesis Evangelion ^-^ I started with the 'heavier' stuff first... XD
Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada) is what got me into anime HARDCORE. I'd literally rush home to watch it every afternoon, regardless if it were summer break or not. I guess you could call it my 'kiddie soap opera". What I vividly recall is that the animation and story line were SO much better than the horrid crap that Hasbro and Mattel spewing out so they could pimp their toy lines. (e.g.: GI Joe, He Man, etc.) BTW, you can keep Minmay; I was always a Lisa Hayes fan.
GO SPEED RACER GO!!! ^_^
Me too. That was the first anime series i watched. after that ghost sweeper and dbz and so on...
Doraemon FTW! :3
FTW! Doraemon was probably my first.
My first anime.... that was the dubbed version of Magic Knights Rayearth I think. Since then I've collected the mangas, the OVAs, and the art books.
the first gundam and Evangelion XD since then all i care about in life is anime girls and GUNDAM
Danny, great panchira shot! I've been itching for the next 2D panchira shot weekly, which you said you were gonna do...apparently the idea fell of the face of the planet. ^^;
Me likes it too
I should of probably worded my post better. It should be as follow > "Karasu-kun, great panchira shot" and then the rest is fine. ^^;
Maybe somebody can take up the job for me ^^;
The first anime I ever saw was part of a single episode of Robotech (Macross) which I really liked but was never able to identify until years later, but the first series I ever actively watched (and fell in love with) was Sailor Moon. The next were fansubbed copies of Saber Marionette J. Ah,Memories ;)
My first Anime was Voltron back in 1983. Soon it was followed by Transformers and well the rest is history.
I want to say the same thing, but can those be counted as anime? The first was a radical re-editing of a Japanese cartoon, the latter was designed for American audiences, airing in the US first and later dubbed into Japanese. Artistically speaking, the "look" of both shows is certainly Japanese, although I was far too young to know the difference. Discounting these examples, I would say my first this-is-a-japanese-cartoon anime was Ranma 1/2, followed closely by the Fist of the North Star movie.
I always was under the impression that Transformers came from Japan. Voltron is from Japan though and shares the same art style as everything else from that time period. If you say that Voltron isn't Anime, then the US imports of DBZ aren't Anime either. Those were extremely edited as well.
My first anime was Voltes V. then followed by Voltron. the rest is now a blur.
My first anime was Robotech. Now that I think of it, I kind of feel old...
Shhh, we are not old.
You may not be old but look at my post further down. I'm old (Weeps)
well i have watched a lot before i reached macross. im a teen too! :P
I'm not sure if its was Transformers, Gobots or Samurai Troopers.
LOL'd I feel like old watching voltes v AHAHA~
my first anime was sailor moon dub that aired in the morning before school. i remember getting up extra early just to be able to watch each episode. But at the time sailor moon was just a cartoon to me. But after that my brother introduced me to NGE and while i liked it it didn't hock me into anime as much as Outlaw Star did. I saw those two and loved them and just wanted more.
oh and Minmay is awesome but i always liked this song more... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GP2hzhnhyvk
doraemon in chinese? Digimon in Chinese? LOL. Digimon was shown on Sunday, so I wake up early just to watch xD
I watched Gatchaman (the G-Force version) as a kid, and I absolutely loved it. I watched a few others also growing up. But, the series that got me really into it was Love Hina. I look back on that anime with nostalgic eyes.
the first ever anime i watched was most likely megaman, but i only saw one episode since it was on at like 5 am on a saturday morning.. and that was back when i was like 5 or 6 years old lol if that doesn't count then i guess it's pokemon hahahaha i became an anime junky in like 2004, when i upgraded to DSL and was able to download so much more anime hahaha
megaman? hopefully not the fighting robot one.... I don't think that was anime........
naw there was definitely a megaman anime i think... i bought one vhs of it back when i was a kid. but other than that, i can't really back that up lol btw, where part of the philippines do you live in? i'm a pinoy too :3
My first anime would have to be either one of these two (cannot remember which one i saw first). Saint Seiya or Totoro, definitely one of those.
my first anime was TRANZOR Z.... i think i was just five years old.. oh man... that was a while ago... I'm glad anime turned to be great today..
Same with me...^_^;
Same with me as well (at least as far as I can remember) and I'm older than you. ^^
can someone tell me where the cutie character from the post is from...please >_< oh and the first anime that i watched was Rahxephon, and i absolutely loved it. Now that i think about it i came to experience anime quite late in my childhood.
I remember mispronouncing the title of the first anime I've seen. I mispronounced it as "wortel" when it's actually called Voltes V. A classic. I spent almost $200 just to get the Chogokin version sometime last year. Watched it when I was a wee kid back in Jakarta :)
Oops forgot to post the youtube link: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt8cHqmhWv4
My first anime was "Warriors of the Wind" A dubbed version of "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", and kind of the first dubbed version of "Guyver" I was like 5 or 6 and I loved all the blood in that series, sure a few episodes freaked me out, but it was awesome!
The first anime that I watched that turned me into a hardcore anime freak was Evangelion. My god I loved that show. But not including that, I used to watch other stuff like Dragon Ball (not Dragon Ball Z) and Pokemon on TV.
Kimba maybe?
The oldest anime remember watching is Robotech and Saint Seiya both in their Latin America releases.
I would've quoted it Danny, but it was in my generic images folder and I have no idea where I got it from. It might've been Sankaku Complex, though I'm not completely sure. (Though I'm sure SC took it from somewhere else, too)
ok then please mention that you forgot the source.
Robotech with cheesy English dub.
...Wow, seems like there's actually a lot of people who remember getting started with Doraemon and Sailor Moon. I'm the same - used to watch both right before going to school in the afternoon. I was living in Hong Kong at the time, and completely left anime once I moved to Canada. Love Hina was the one that got me back in, though.
