Personally, I don't see a real need to upgrade to Vista. Unfortunately, every new system sold here in SoCal comes with it. Vista most likely will not run several apps I frequently use. I'll be forced to accept Vista when I buy a new desktop within a few months. It's like the time when I changed from Win98 to WinXP.

Dell once sold systems that were Vista-only, but now you have the option to choose Vista or XP. IMO Vista looks nice but this visual upgrade taxes the system instead of helping it (unlike Mac OS). It does nothing to help the user. Gadgets are a joke compared to Widgets. Vista also makes file copies and movings very very slow compared to XP despite having more than the recommended amount of ram. Lastly, Vista isn't fully compatible with everyone's machine. On my machine, wireless always drops out and hangs Vista Connect To and COM Surrogate always closes itself when too many windows are running.

i have used a friends computer that had vista and found many of the safety features and whatnot are VERY annoying to work with and work around. there were certain things i was not able to do, and in the end just plainly pissed me off.
i have no intention to switch to vista EVER.

personaly i have a vista computer and i have yet to find any serius problem with i being backwords compatible with the softwear i have (maybe that just means free softwear is writen better?)
if your computer can handel runing vista its just like any operating system. i think most peoples gripes with vista can be easily dealt with if microsft instaled it pre tuned. there are tons of websites out there dedicated to tuning vista. vista is just new look at xp it was crap until sevice pack 2 came out. this is probly true with most of the operating system that microsoft creates.

its the same thing in america now alot of people who bought vista computers want to downgrade into xp including my father. Xp is a bit glitched and buggy and i dont even like it, its unique in some parts but xp is still more favorable at the moment.

No rush, Vista is still unstable at this point and like REOS said, when you buy a new desktop/laptop you're more like forced to deal with the newer OS.
Since I am not into consumerism at all and that my current laptop is not totally broken yet, I don't see any interest in switching. Be smart and wait until the right time comes (which can be never).

As long as I can process and edit my RAW photos though, i'll keep my desktop.

VISTA BAD!!!!!!!!! Eats up too much ram for a gaming computer. And you can skip getting Vista with a computer by building your own like I did. XP all the way!!!!!!!!

I'm still using Windows XP despite having Vista Ultimate on one of my HDD's partitions (I somehow acquired this copy of Vista for free ^^;). I really regret allotting half of my HDD's space to it though since I never use it. There are too many bugs and little driver support for me to start using it as my main OS. I also don't see the need to have flashy visuals that take up 1 GB of RAM while idling (even though I have 3 GB's of DDR2). I can just use WindowBlinds or some other theme for XP to make it look snazzy. DirectX 10 is really the only feature of Vista that I could benefit from. But then again, I rather have double the framerate in games over improved textures and effects.

As for my laptop, I just installed Ubuntu Linux on it and it runs fine. Vista would not even be an option considering it's 5 years old and has 256MB of RAM. Once I pickup a new laptop later this year, Vista is getting uninstalled immediately.

Vista is good, been using it for 8 6 months now. Really works great on a Dual Core cpu, XP doesn't even support dual core so if you want the biggest performance increase, then Vista is the way to go. Also, in response to "VISTA BAD!!!!!!!!! Eats up too much ram for a gaming computer." It doesn't actually use up your RAM. Microsoft changed their philosophy on the way OS deals with RAM. What's the point of buying a 6 car garage and only keeping a motorcycle in it? The RAM is being used by SuperFetch, which looks at the patterns in which you use your computer and predicts when you will be running certain programs. It then loads those programs into memory from secondary storage, and thus improves performance. So even though it's using 50% of your RAM, its actually your programs that make your PC faster! So the longer you use it, the faster it gets. Empty RAM is useless RAM...

Empty RAM is useless RAM, yes... until that one odd day of the week I find time to play Crysis... or edit that photoshop image that weighs 1.5Gig.

Loading something into RAM will happen when I double click the programs icon. Once loaded, a fast FSB keeps things running smoothly. To have commonly used programs and tasks loaded into RAM on Tuesday, when I won't use them till Friday seems like a waste of clock cycles to me.

And is there a simple way to purge SuperFetch's cache when I want to, for example, run 3dMark 07? Does one even have the option to shut it down? If I'm encoding a video in H.264 will SuperFetch detect this and reduce it's threads priorities to low on both cores?

I don't wanna seem like I'm hating on Vista, but in my experience it's designed to be too "User Friendly", that is, designed to give mum and dad a chance to get in on this whole personal computer craze; but the more tech savvy you are, the more headaches you'll get.

I actually agreed, but it only happened after a lot of Vista updates. Of course, Vista really needs about 1GB of ram to work well, but I still downgraded my laptop because it was lacking something else that will significantly hamper Vista performance: Graphics Card. Without a decent Graphics Card (The GeForce 8 series or the AMD HD series would be good idea for now), good Ram (About 2gb) and a true dual core system, its better to stay XP for now.

Luckily, I was able to install all of my older applications onto Vista.
But what good are they if they randomly freeze up my computer when in use?
This gets on my freaking nerves all the time. Until the guys at Microsoft release a service pack or work out all the quirks, it's best to stick to XP. Which is great and simple, really.

I'm currently using Windows XP Pro. I've installed Vista and really liked the looks of the new UI. Aero is very clean, fun, and nice to look at. But there are too many problems with Vista and backward compatibility that completely turn me off of the OS. A lot of my games run terribly slow or not at all and the driver support still seems terrible. If only Mac had the same support as PC when it comes to games..

When my XP box died, I could only get an PC with Vista on it. Two days later I went and got a Mac. It just wasn't implemented well as an OS. They should have waited longer and taken the time to really just smooth out the edges. I tried to downgrade to XP, but there aren't any XP drivers for the motherboard and a few on board components. I have no more plans to buy an H/Compaq computer again. Well, maybe HP servers for work.

I am running Win 2k on my computer and not going to use XP or Vista due the vast amount of memory that they use. I find Win 2k run all the programs I want to run without that DRM or security holes. Also, Win 2K is the OS that can run 16-bit and 32-bit apps without much sacrifice. I'll still be using Win 2k for a while longer. I like the look of Win 2k too, also the Admin tools are powerful and organized and less cluttered.

I also agree, i do not intend to upgrade to Windows Vista. There is no real difference and i've seened videos from iMac who proved Winodows stold their ideas. Despite Microsoft counter attacking those videos with videos of their own that say they did not take ideas from iMac.

Windows XP is perfect....i actually have Windows XP Home Media Edition. It's great.

Although eventually there will be software that will no longer be compatible with Windows XP. I recently bought Norton Internet Security 2008 and it's only compatible with XP & Vista. I'm sure users with Windows 2000, 98, 95....etc, are having problems finding proper software for their computers. SOmeday they will start cuttinf off Winodows XP as well. Not anytime soon but someday.

Vista ultimate works great!!! in my workstation 64bit - at first the vista security maybe a little bit annoying and maybe you'll said: What a rubbish! microsoft bastard ¬¬!!but disabling the approval mode that annoying problem is solved ^^ (Run Command - secpol.msc - Local Policies - Security Options - User Account Control: run all blah blah approval mode (double click-disable and reboot ^^ )
The only problem i remember i had was with 3d max 9, i had to do some tricks for gettin' the max work but then the 3ds max Extension 1: Productivity Booster arrives and it was ok!, now im using the 3ds max 2008 and is workin' great but as i say in spanish "Autodesk del mal ¬¬ " They still can´t get the max work with the aero active...it is still disabled when max opens..well life isn´t perfect haha ^^
For me vista is summed up in these words "Windows Vista Ultimate", premium and bussiness vers. really suck!!!
I´m sure that in 3 years more, people´ll like a lot Vista and will hate the new windows, the same happened with Windows 98 - Windows XP, this is funny now almost everyone like XP haha ^^

I already have Vista. It is infinitely better than XP.

I've heard many people claim that Vista sucks, but whenever I ask them why they think it sucks they can never think of anything. The only real complaint I've heard is that "It's not much of an upgrade.", which is obviously not the case. There was more changes in the Vista revision from XP than XP from 2000, you just don't see most of them because it's all core features.

The difference is really significant if you know what's actually going on behind the scenes.

Although Vista supports the next gen games like Crysis and Hellgate: London better, I personally still prefer to use XP. Why? Mainly is that Vista is more graphical intensive compared to XP, meaning that you would need more RAM and processing power to run it (Mind you, thats only the OS alone, what about other programs that you will need to install later).

What matters to me most is the effciency of the OS. I would never want the system to lag just by clicking or file transfer. Thats why my theme is always set to 'Windows Classic' mode. To minimize the amount of VRAM used.

Another thing that I would like to say is that most laptop producing company like Acer etc. seemed to never give a thought about the specs of some of their low-end laptops of their line and went ahead to equip it with Vista. This not only slows the system down but also might make it unstable as well. I just felt that it is irresponsible for them to not think thoroughly before deciding to equip a machine with a new OS that those specs can't even handle.

It will then be just following the trend blindly. Just my 2 cents.

Lots of negative reaction on Vista there is...

My personnal experience : I'm a casual user (not using my comps for work, just browsing the net, making some photo editing, watching anime, play some game and such), but i have 4 comps (3 desktop and 1 laptop, 2 of the desktop being 3-4 years old, 1 is a 1 year old dual core e6600 with 2gig ram, my laptop is like 1year and a half old, beind the first Core Duo being sold). Until like 6 months ago, they were all XP based, and i beta tested Vista on my main comp (the most recent one), but beta was awfull.

If there's really no point in upgrading the laptop and my 2 older desktop (not enough ram, old hardware, it's gonna be a lot slower), i did upgrade my main comp, but kept an alternate partition with XP on it, for games (they run a lot slower under Vista) and some software vista-incompatible. All in all i like Vista (i'm using it for my day-to-day runabouts), even if there's annoying stuff (pop-ups...). I'm really using XP less and less, but there's still so much stuff not working right under Vista that i can't blame ppl for not being willing to upgrade...

Well it's pretty much a personal choice of wanting an OS which is either aesthetic or pragmatic.
Though I had preferred Windows XP, i was not given the choice to install it when i bought my Acer notebook due to the fact that they had superimposed Vista as their sole OS.
Till now, i regretted getting my laptop due to Vista and Acer's poor quality standards.
Guess i will be switching to Mac soon.

vista eats up a lot of system resources, is very buggy, has an interface that takes some getting used to. i can see why a lot of people don't use it. for me personally, its the lure of the recent vista only games that made me upgrade, however, its come to my attention that those "vista only" games actually run better on xp, microsoft needs to be shot...

Windows Vista has many improvements in entertainment software but Vista will not let you play some original CD's and you can't import the music from your newly purchased CD to your itunes in order to listen to it on your ipod.
Also, Vista comes with spyware installed by microsoft so they can monitor all your activities that you do from your pc.
If i knew how, i would erase this insidious program and install Windows XP which never had problems like Vista has. There are many more issues with Vista but i have no time to type everything right now.

In other words, if you really have a choice between vista and XP i would never choose vista over xp. Vista sucks in many ways.
Anybody could tell me how to completely erase vista off my pc and install XP??

if you can find a version of XP that can be instaled in DOS mode (if there is a version that can do that) theres your answer but otherwise reformat your HDD to FAT32 format then install win 98 then XP over the top it worked for me
