Thank you for all the applications. I'm proud to have sooo many talented folks in the community! Many super stars were also discovered too.
As mentioned in the original text below, due to the amount of applications (much more than expected within such a short time!), I cant reply to all. I will start contacting chosen applicants - If you do not hear from me within the next 24 hours then I would like to say...

ご応募いただき本当にありがとうございました。お疲れさまでした。これに応募したあなたはきっと夢を実現する事が出来る。日本語勉強はあきらめないで、パッションをもって勉強し続けてください。応援しています。また今度の機会で。

And to the others who said "I wish I took Japanese" - if you really meant it then its not too late to start - this is how you can start too.
Do you have a good command of Japanese? Would you like a monthly supply of figures? If the answer is "yes" then read on. I'm looking for translators to help me translate Japanese into English and the conditions are as follows. 1. You need to be readily available for long term remote work - i.e, I will send you stuff to translate and you do so in your own time - but I need a fast turn around. 2. Payment is by figures - brand new. For the first project, the figures are GoodSmile, Max Factory or anything distributed by GoodSmile. 3. Below are examples of what I need translated - each section is blurb for a figure. I anticipate that you would translate about 20 of these per month. I also need you to handle the occasional press release etc. If you can do this for me then I will arrange for about 10-15 figures (scale PVC's/figmas Nendoroid's etc of your choice - any GoodSmile/Max Factory or Good Smile distributed figures) to be sent to you *every month*. These figures are not my SAFS ^^; They are brand new and will be sent to you directly from the manufacturers. Initially I have a few hundred blurbs I need translated. For this initial amount I will arrange to send you the latest PVC/Nendoroids/Figmas for the past few months. I need these translations done within the next two weeks. 4. The reason why payment is figures is because I need folks who are passionate about figures. Future projects will involve cash payments but the first project will be figures. 5. You will be working with my company Mirai Inc which means you would be able to put my company name down on your resume as work experience. Depending on performance, I can write referral letters and folks who turn out to be super stars will be considered for full time employment with my company. 6. You dont have to be able to speak Japanese well but have good reading comprehension. I need professionally translated pieces of work and *not* Engrish. A good example of Engrish can be found at English AkibaBlog. There are some Japanese nuisances that cant be translated into English effectively. You need to be able to judge what elements are important to translate correctly and how you get that across effectively and naturally in English. 7. You need to be able to work with little guidance. For example I dont expect to be asked "how should I translate this bit" - it would be your job to decide. 8. You need to be available for communication over mail, IM and phone. 9. You need to be able to keep the work you are doing confidential. You may be given information about products months before they are released. 10. If you are interested then have a look at the end of this post and translate the provided blurbs into english and send it to me in the body of an email to [jobs at mirai dot fm] and title the mail "Japanese Translation." You must include your profile page URL like http://www.dannychoo.com/home/eng/fatbastard/ - any mails that do not follow this format are filtered and not read (sorry) 11. Due to the amount of applicants that I expect, I cant reply to all but will choose folks who have the most accurate and natural sounding translations - dont bother using bablefish or Google translate as you will be wasting your time and mine ^^; 12. I am looking for about 3 people to fill this translator position. Format your mail like...

I've been hanging around with my friends too much, I could actually read 40% of that, with Rikaichan it increased to 70%.

Don't have time to learn Japanese though ;_; I would have time after I graduate but something tells me it would be too late by then :/

Danny, I don't know legally how figures as payment would jive here in the states. Probably need to be taxed as income right? Do labor laws even allow this?

As I clearly stated - figures for the first project and then cash for future projects. If it makes you happy I can re-word it to say "Volunteers needed - free figures"

In terms of legality, this can be considered compensation, and can be legal as long as there is a compensation clause included with the contract. For example, many CEOs of nonprofit organizations do not get paid very much at all monetarily for their work. Instead, they get a large amount of compensations such as the use of a company car (Mercedes+), access to company resources (private jets and recreational areas included), free meals (at 5 star restaurants), and more.
Similarly, this job can be considered volunteer work with the figures being provided to you on good faith as a reward for helping out. Since there is actually no money exchanging hands, and you are not an employee of Mirai Inc. (yet), there should be no problems with the reporting of taxes either. Besides, as long as you are receiving less than $600 a month in any sort of compensation it is not necessary to report such income as taxes.

Without a doubt FatB! I sure don't take it lightly. I fit nearly all of Danny's requirements, but I sometimes miss the subtle nuances and my Kanji skills are lacking... If not I would have this out ASAP.

Looks like it's time for me to start a new Kanji learning project. A project that is heavy on study! I will be ready for the future.

Come on FatB you can make up for lost time...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I never learned how to read the kanji characters! I took a semester of Japanese at school and I got good at it, especially at speaking and pronunciation. I was able to form my own sentences without any help from the book and without sounding like an American. Only problem is I have no one to practice with and we only learned how to read hiragana and katakana. Kanji was taught in the second semester and I haven't taken that class yet.

Damn my backwards learning...I can speak Japanese fairly well from hearing so much of it in all the subbed anime I watch, but I can't read it at all. I considered taking a college course for it, but I suck at learning how to read new languages (I have some vision problem, apparently) >.<

the new semester of college is coming. 俺は絶望します。俺の日本語めちゃめちゃだ!!!半分漢字わかりません。
I feel like orz. I like to do this. I could be some use in the future. I got my first Figma last week. I over rode the first year on Japanese here. I might fell like I am in intro class even though I have been on self study for two years.

And, just as an off note, it all appears as question marks to me. So all I see is "???????????" I'm using Firefox; does anyone know how I can get the characters to appear? I can't understand them, but it would be nicer than seeing "??????" all the time.

Sounds like you don't have Asian language packs installed, as Mozilla normally would find the right encoding if you did.

Control Panel --> Regional and Language Options --> Languages --> Install East Asian Fonts; you'll need a Windows CD handy though.

Alternatively you can try in Firefox going View --> Character Encoding, and changing it to Unicode or something, maybe you just have it on a strange setting ^^;

Babel fish is probably what a reputable company like Alter is using. Their staff is probably trained in Engrish.

Can you spot the errors in that figure box?

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10065671p/10/1

Tick, tick! Time's up!

(1) It's Strikers, not "Strkers"
(2) It's Magical, not "Magic"

Makes you wonder if you bought a bootleg, huh?

The company probably doesn't "use" anything except their own poor command of the English language to label their packages. That's what you can blame the Engrish and poor spelling on. And hey, as long as they churn out quality sculpts like they do, I could care less about Engrish and spelling, it actually makes it more charming in my opinion. In addition, it's their series, if they commission a company that omits letters or misspells things on occasion and they kept retaining them to do work, that's their prerogative, isn't it? When sniffing around for bootleg "earmarks" I always check the stickers on the package, the quality and the company I buy from, not spelling. That link you provided is from Hobby Search, and they're probably the most reputable company I've ever dealt with. I make it a point to only buy from companies that are actually in Japan. It often costs less than the companies here in the US that seem to want to rip you off a lot, stall on shipping, release later, and are statistically more prone to selling bootlegs. Also, not so long ago Japanese companies started applying holographic material to their products' boxes to authenticate Japanese products (the acronym of the association escapes me at the moment, but the logo is on everything anymore), as well as JAN codes to show you the authenticity as well.

To me it looks like easy work, and I have had experience translating the 12 Kindoms novels into English and have JLPT level 1 certification.

Can you please give me the okay to still try to apply?

I thought about it but I don't think I have a sufficient amount of knowledge (yet). Hopefully, there might be more chances in the future, and maybe then I'll have some qualifications. :(

Ha!
My Japanese sucks! As much as I could hold a slow conversation 15years ago in Japanese, these days, I'm slow. Only real thing is I can watch anime and understand 50% of it. Last year I was in Tokyo for 3 days on business and could not real speak too much.....still I was the translator for the group I was with.
