As you have already seen from the Japan Public Sleeping article, this is a common position for folks here to fall asleep in when they are in public. I've never seen folks sleep like this in other countries and was wondering if it was a Japanese thing only.
Ive slept like that before but I would never sleep in public areas like that or at all. Nothing like a little sleeping in the NYC streets like that to get you mugged or ridiculed. Why are they sleeping btw?
lol, does that "Wonder Festival" paper bag rings a bell? XD
Ahh, good eyes lol. ME so stupid...
makes me wonder why nobody has taken the bag yet. but I guess that's one good thing about Japan. I remember back in the eighties Vancouver use to be that safe as well.
fiddlesticks! did that comment gave away my age. ^^;
not really, you could still be 102 for all we know.
LOL if I were 102, I probably wouldn't be reading DannyChoo.com. makes we wonder though, how old would the oldest member here be.
No but saying fiddlesticks might have done that... just teasing you matvin. Yes, many places where safer in the '80 here as well.
ugh... sorry marvin
LOLOL! btw no worries, I understand "t" is pretty close to "r". at least I now know you're a touch typist. ^^
fiddlesticks :)
probably should have said "D'oh" ^^
lol i'm gonna start using fiddlesticks from now on, fiddlestick!
that and "whoops a daisy" ^^;
I've fallen asleep in Central Park by just laying down on the Green. In high school, I used to have no sleep, so I slept in fetal position in a corner somewhere during lunch or in free periods. I've only used the sitting position once in my life at a Barnes and Noble.
hahaha in school i would fall asleep thru math class because it was so boring i would sleep outside too many freaks and weirdos
I never slept that way before. Looks like your back and neck will hurts when you wake up from that position XD
Not so much hurt, but you do get stiff... ^_^;
get stiff where? ;) but yeah, it doesn't seem too comfy
Sitting cross-legged for a long time is not the most comfortable position to be in. Your legs and butt will be numb when you get up. Hate it when they do it in my school.
I've taken naps like that before; usually at long gaming events with no chairs in sight. But not as hunchback as those in the photo.
Hmm, more likely I've slept like the guy that have his back on the wall. Other then that, probably with my mouth wide open. Well, that was what my cousin told me..
My step brother always used to sleep with his mouth wide open - normally to be found slouched on the sofa in the morning after a party with all sorts of interesting things in his mouth. How he never woke up I'll never know. As for the pic above - just looking at it makes the nape of my neck ache!
dirty mouth try new orbits gum!!! haha i thought i was the only Dan-kun sup we're twins
Your accounts are the first cases I've even heard of.
That does not look comfortable.
lol Thats what I was thinking as well.
I see people sleeping on the MRT trains here... They sleep while sitting on the seats...
Some postures I've seen would make a gymnast cringe XD
There's no wonder why massages and relaxing at Onsens is so popular, sleeping on trains, on the floor and everywhere else people sleep in Japan can't be that good for the posture.
That looks rather uncomfortable. Looks like you'd wake up with a stiff/sore neck/back. Also, they're allowed to sleep at that Convention? (It's a convention right?) Every year I've gone the Otakon they always yell at the people who fall asleep and tell them to go sleep in their hotel rooms. Even if they're out of the way and not obstructing traffic. Although I guess it is very risky for them to be sleeping in public and they want to avoid any problems from it.
They do that at the cons in Dallas too (A-Kon, Anime Fest), but they do it because they think you don't have a room. Like, you can't just sleep around the con floor; you have to get a room or go home. Some people camp out in the video rooms, too.
Bah, you know I knew about that, but completely forgot about that factor. @.@ Ah well. Just makes me wonder what do they do overnight while the convention is closed if they don't have a room. Guess they find someone to bum a room from. Guess I'm not use to seeing people sleeping without a gopher/security prodding at them to wake up and leave.
Yep, I've seen people sleeping like that, and coincidentaly, it was inside an anime event. The big events here in Brazil are relatively secure, so you can even sleep inside, though most people will do it with friends around to take care of them. It's not exactly confortable, but when you are completely exausted, doesn't really matter.
I think the most tired I've ever been on a trip was during an anime convention. I could sleep standing up even. And the worst part is that leaving was not an option... I had to stay there 'till late at night...
Reminds me of the times outfield during NS. When you are too tired to think, you don't really care where or how you sleep. Your back will probably mind though.
How do those people pull that off? I'd never be able to sleep like that or else I'll get intense shoulder pain. =_=
First time I've seen anyone sleep like that.
Well I've seen people sleep around on my college campus, but not in that position...
How can you sleep in a position like that? The only place I can sleep is in my own bed...
I sleep like that sometimes when I'm just too tired of walking. but I usually find a seat first. Don't wanna seat on the floor. I guess japan is just so clean you can sleep on the floor. lol
i've seen people sleeping in trains - sitting and even standing. but havent seen people falling asleep like this here. they'd loose all their belongings if they did that here.
Trust me, when one is sleep deprived any position or place will do. I even dozed off when standing on the train. Stumbled and nearly fell flat on my face... lol Actually it's the same thing that caucasian/non-asian people find it hard to squat comfortably for long periods. ^^
weird, that would give you poor posture!
I only know that kind of sleeping positions from Festivals or Parties (Especially Metal Fests and the like). Nobody bothers you there (because it's more laid back). But here in germany only homeless people do such things. And even then the guys from the public order office or the police will come. What's the point anyway? Can't these people go home and sleep there?
That guy will probably suffer one hell of a back pain when he wakes up. The only country I've heard where people can sleep in public is Japan. If you try sleeping outside in the public here though, you might wake up without your wallet, cellphone and probably your clothes. Or if you're really unlucky, you might not wake up at all LOL XD
I've slept in a similiar position against a wall. I think it's human to sleep next to/under something. I don't think I would be able to sleep without at least a wall.
in France, if you sleep like that in the street, you'll wake up without your stuffs for sure o.o
The full bending forward posture is quite uncomfortable, but you can nap quite comfortably in a slouching posture while sitting. People do it all the time on the bus and train in Singapore. When you are dog-tired, a cool dry spot on the floor can be quite heavenly to sit down and rest awhile.
I havent even seen people at UK conventions do that lol. I could never sleep like that anyways.
Some people in Australia sleep like that. Mostly when they're very drunk and are usually found outside nightclubs in the early hours. Not a safe thing to do here unless your friends are watching over you.
if you didnt says that theyre sleeping, ill assume that theyre just praying or just hiding their face or making some cool ritual or they just want to do it for change.

I have never seen that anywhere but Japan. I always admire the Japanese being able to sleep just about anywhere and in any position.
I have only slept this way when I have been completely trashed, and that was not in public but over a friends house. This position helps when it feels like the world is spinning so fast you are going to be ripped apart. The only place I could sleep in public is at a beach, otherwise I fell sleeping in public disrespectful. Anybody else think that to?
I did sleep in public once but I had to lean back on something for me to sleep comfortably.. Doing what those in the pic do can hurt my neck and back.. :(
i slept standing up once..but the next second, I bumped into a guy.. And i sleep on the bus many times. And usually, i do some weird actions like jumping up when I'm about to fall onto the ground.. Embarrassing moments >_<
In the army I have seen a solder sleeping standing up in a packed truck after returning from field exercise. But the problem was that he was holding he's weapon in front of him (like ordered:P) and when the truck drove into a road bump he hit his forehead against the barrel of his weapon. Was a lucky accident, he only got a bruise, but it could have ended worse - like loosing an eye:(
We would nap on the benches in the theatre building in college (and some people would actually spend the night on a bench or couch because they didn't have time to go home). But I'd never take a nap like that out in public; not without someone keeping an eye out at least. It's really nice that they feel they can trust people not to steal their stuff.
I slept like that when I take some short naps in my former workplace. Good for getting up quickly, as your mind is more alert that way (due to stress from back >_<)
not to that extend but people do catch some shut-eye on the bus and train over here. which reminds me, once there was this school girl who dozed off beside me on the bus. she was in such deep sleep her head fall over into my arms and it stays there for the rest of the journey. i just pretend to be asleep as well. ^^;
you lucky guy!
head was heavy though. ^^
was she cute? and did she drool on you? lol
"I've never seen folks sleep like this in other countries and was wondering if it was a Japanese thing only." Hmm, me neither:P But when thinking about it, this seems like one of the safest ways to sleep in a public (crowded) place.
I've slept like that in public area before. At that time, I was totally tired and knockout on the ground.
One time i got out of my shower, put on my towel and just sat like this and then (without tryint) I fell asleep and when i got up i couldn't walk! it Sucked! i was standing up and my leg's and fet were soooo asleep i could barely move!
Probably in Japan they feel less likely to be murdered, raped or mugged...
i dont know how they dont end up with back pain...
Not sure if this qualifies, but go to any university campus and you'll find students sleeping on the grass, under trees, park benches, etc.
I use to fall asleep a lot during my high-school days in public transport vehicles but I sleep clutching my bag.
I wouldn't instinctively sleep in this position. My instinct would be to lay on my side and support my head, probably using the bag. I'd also be too embarrassed to sleep so publicly. I'd maybe sleep similarly in a car, but a seat is a thousand times more comfortable than a stone floor with crossed legs.
The only place I slept publicly is transit because it can be a long ride
Haven't seen anyone sleep like that . For me is like a space shuttle launch, conditions just have to be exactly right for it to happen, and in this position it's definitely a no go.
Well its actually not so unusual to me. I've seen weirder things like people sleeping on a dinner table.
I used to sleep like that in public places when I was in high school.
i'd be too nervous too fall completely asleep. i would have to be hammered to fall asleep in a public place.
That is wayyy too uncomfortable of a position to sleep... comfortably. No one here sleeps in public except homeless people.
Definately don't see that here, well not people dressed as well as the people in the photos anyways if you get my drift... Myself, the only place I ever fall asleep in public is on the bus.
Happens in the states--follow me around long enough and you're bound to catch a glimpse of it.
