Parents, Partners and your Figures

iron2000 asks a good question - what do you parents think of your figure collecting hobby?
My parents dont know ^^;
How about your partner - what do they think? As for my wife - she thinks some are cute (mostly nendoroids) not too incredibly keen on the ones with big eyes ^^;
Luckily I made figures part of my work or I don't think I would have so many ^^;

Original text from iron2000 below.
Finally found a suitable casing for the Figmas. Bought it and on last Wednesday I finally unboxed my Figmas. I got the case at a local shop. Its the Clear Collection Case W400 from Epoch. Costed me about $26USD. My first real female figures. Theres mostly only mecha here. The only other figures I had before are the old TMNT figures. But Figmas are on another class from those TMNT figures. They are like treasures so the case to protect them. My mom commented that they are pretty girls. Don't know if my dad has noticed them yet. How did your parents react when they see your first bishoujo figure? Casing box from an online store

Nice collection! Most of my figures are stored in IKEA shelves. reasonably priced and always in stock. when i came home from Japan i mailed most of my important stuff- Guitars/CPU/sports equipment/figures and gundams. My parents were shocked at the huge tonnage of figures and gundams. My father doesnt really care, my mother does the mother thing and doesnt really care, though she does find some of them cute.
Either way they found that Alter Saber holds my glasses and cleaning cloth was pretty clever, my dad is a quiet fan of Nida and the Shuraki girls in general.
Though by far the one they like the most is FREEing's Haruhi Bunny. That figure displays her energy and playfulness better than any figure I own. So as long as the figure captures the character - I think anyone will be fine with it.

I was thinking too much and hesitated to display them.
But luckily theres no problem.

I felt like Nogizaka Haruka hiding her otakuness.
A room full of Gundams then suddenly came a group of Figmas.

Hey, that's a pretty nice case, and not to expensive either. My parents at first though I was buying "dolls". I had to explain the difference between figures and dolls, and my gundams not being toys.

I'm mostly into Figmas, though I have been oggling a couple static figures. Anyway, when I first showed my mom pictures of the Figmas, she said, "Oh my god! They're so cool!" and immediately started going through them with me, going over which ones we wanted most. XD I had to order another Mikuru from HLJ just so she wouldn't steal mine.

My dad, on the other hand, totally doesn't get it. When Yuki and Haruhi came in, he said, "You bought dolls?" My mom scoffed at him, and he said, "Oh, I'm sorry. Action figures." *eyeroll* I haven't actually gotten any decent static figures yet, but I doubt he'll get that either.

action figures isn't that just the term they use to say "dolls for guys" hahaha...if you look at the old g.i joes they were basically military ken dolls.

in the end i think its all art...how things are sculpted and painted determine if its worth buying.

Damn straight it's art! =P And the harder it is to pull it off well, the more like art it is. I think that's part of why I particularly like Figmas; articulation is not easy.

..... My mom doesn't know you can choose to see some of my figure's naughty bits, so she just thinks they're kinda cool looking. My dad doesn't really come down to my room so much so he doesn't really say anything. It will be more weird to see what my new oomate's reaction will be when I go back to college. The one last year in residence thought they were pretty cool.

Even though my mom watches some anime with my sister and I, and she has also read a manga or two, I really don't think she understands the figures quite yet. xD She still calls them dolls and such, but she doesn't mind them, she even gives my sister and I money to buy them. Same with my dad, except I don't really think he's taken a position on them, he's a collector himself, but he hates anime, so I think that while he understands wanting to collect figures, he doesn't like the fact that they are related to anime or Japan in any way, shape, or form. But still, he gives us the money to buy what we want, so I guess he doesn't really mind it.

I love my figure collection more than a lot of stuff... I even have a term I call "figure shopping" as an excuse to go out somewhere at times! My parents look at them as "toys" that kids buy... I keep telling them it's more than just "toys" and wished I didn't spend so much on it.

I really should start to get cases for my figures but space is always a problem. Thus my figures are constantly exposed to dust which I'd need to go dust off from time to time. Thankfully most are in book shelves away from too much dust...

Well the only comments my parents make (mostly my mom, my dad don't make much of a fuss) are the revealing clothes, cost, and the limited space to put them in the apt...other than that they're cool with it...though they don't know about the cast-offable ones...man I really got to get me some of those cases it's cheap and sturdy...

Well I don't have that many to begin with anyway. So I don't think my parents really mind about my figure collecting. Every time a new order arrives, they'll just comment "Oh, you've got a lot of money don't you? Spending it on "toys"."
I guess they won't mind as long as I don't go all out and buy a figure every few weeks.

I'm past the stage of caring what my parents think.

Some of my friends had it worse. There's one who has to go home at specific times so he can sneakily bring home whatever he bought. Another one has his parents donating his stuff away when he isn't at home. Kawaiisou.

Parents - Well, they don't mind. Although my mom yells at me about dusting but I easily toss that aside by telling her "You try moving all those figures to dust." My parents helped fill my room with dragons though. It all started going on three years ago when I left for a month to go spend Christmass with my at-the-time boyfriend. I came back to lots of new dragons that continued to come for years. My mom always had fun digging through all my junk I'd bring home from Otakon and see what I bought.

Partner - He knows I'm a dork. He doesn't seem to mind the idea of them. He's joked around by saying he'd have to move here cause he couldn't imagine shipping all my stuff out to Wyoming.

My mom thinks some are cute and that the rest are too sexy. I'm going to be 21 october 7th and she still treats me like im 10 in some ways, at least she hasn't seen my small hentai and Gravure collection hidden inside one of my computer cases. I don't mind though since the rest of the time she treats me my age. My dad doesn't care as long as there not naked and my sister wants to steal my figures.

When I was still living with my parents my mom didn't quite approved my collecting hobby since she thought that's an unwise use of hard-earned money. She rather want me to buy some books instead (yeah, right). Now after married and get my own place, since my wife knew my hobby before we married I think she's quite okay but being a woman she's also like mummy who think collecting figures is a waste of time and money.

my parents are old school chinese, every time i buy something nonfunctional to living, eating, sleeping and pooping they tell me i'm wasting my money and they should look after it.
they've said that about video games, comic books, trading cards, and now my whole collection of toys and statues.

and its a good thing i'm back to being single my ex's would have killed me if they saw all my toys.

same here, I know exactly what you mean (about the old-school Chinese parents). They just don't see the art-form behind toys and figures. To them, a Soul-of-Chogokin or a FREEing "bunny" falls under the same category as a Mattel Hot Wheels found at Toys R Us.... all they can see is that I paid a couple hundred bucks for it instead of $5.

Why would you put Figmas in a case? They are for playing with ^^;;; Mine hang out on the little locker/box (hard to explain) by my computer and top of my computer tower.

As for my husband's thoughts on figure my figure collection...we have very similar tastes in that aspect. I am a weirdo girl who particularly likes figures dressed sexy/posed sexy/with big eyes/with cast off options. So of course my husband likes my figures :) He also has a few himself as well as some Revoltechs to play with (not in cases either!!!). He probably wishes I'd spend less (but not in the way that he scolds me, we just thought that after getting out of BJDs I would spend less money...) but otherwise no issues :)

Well, the case is mainly to prevent dust build up.
I feel that Figmas are like high-class action figures not like the cardboard backing packaged TNMT figures.
So I don't really want to disturb them.

Anyway the case can be easily accessed and opened.

I've seen broken heads and hands, makes me not want to mess with them too often.
But I've also seen Danny and other bloggers carrying Figmas outside , makes me think they are not that fragile, perhaps its the way the Figma is handled then.

I just have a soft brush that I dust my figures with...I like being able to get at them with minimal effort xD; I agree that they are higher class than something you can get at the kid's toy store, but they aren't THAT fancy, just better quality.

My figmas have fallen, been bent, had hands forced into sockets all without being broken, they are meant to be played with!~

But of course, when it all comes down to it they are your figures to do with/display as you please!

My folks are pretty cool with it. I had to do some pretty quick talking when the first (and oddly enough, most revealing so far) turned up in the mail. Now when the HLJ box arrives it's just handed over without too much questioning... other than what's in it. Both parents tend to look at them from an artistic sense and often comment on the design, outfit and quality of sculpt. I do still cop a razzing for "buying dolls" from them... but I give as good as I get so it's not an issue. It also probably helps that I tend to buy fully clothed figurines.

As for spending the money, the view in the house is that it's my cash, I earnt it, and I'll do with it as I please, and compared to keeping a classic car running my outlay on figures isn't all that large. I can also justify it in that they come in handy for university. If I'm designing something large for a project, I can build a scale model in the same scale as a figure and use that for reference and photos.

Nice figma collection...

About parents and friends reaction: At least for me, it was the same as to Mrs. Choo. They said it was "kinda cute".
Dunno what was their REAL reaction though.
But I'm pretty shure some people probably though I'm some sort of pervert, some must've thought this is kinda weird, some looked down on me, and stuff like that.

Specially after seeing some of my... *ahem* less behaved figures.
http://xspblog.com/2008/07/27/figures-update/

On the other hand, I already made 2 people that never had contact with figures addicted to it.
But I learned not to pay too much attention to people who look down on my hobbies.
In Brazil, there's still too many people that thinks "cartoons are for kids", "dolls are for little girls" and have problems with ecchiness in anime and stuff.

It was a few months before my mom noticed that I had started a collection, and she surprisingly asked me if my Nanoha figurine was Japanese. I don't think she's been exposed to any Japanese culture. I asked her how she knew; she said her barrier jacket looked Japanese. o_O I can only reason that she derived it, knowing how extensive supernatural powers are rooted in the legacy of Japanese storytelling.

I've always been an otaku in spirit, so it isn't surprising that I don't find anything wrong with figures. My family seems indifferent to them but would not rather identify.

My folks are cool with my gunpla collection! In fact they were the ones who bought my cabinet!

My mom is the one who gave me my first gunpla, and I never bought any other 'toy' except for gundams since she gave me a gunpla. IIRC that was when I was 8 years old...My dad doesn't complain too. Both of them say that I should get a more relaxing hobby, because they say I always exert a lot of effort in school and they say that building gunpla only makes me more stressed. Also they always say that I'm gonna "destroy my fingers someday" because of my interests.. I draw and paint, build gunpla, play with my PS2 and I'm also learning the guitar, they totally went against me when I said that I want to learn to play the piano too!

I dunno about being stressed but I enjoy building Gundams!
My sis is cool with it too, she stares at my cabinet sometimes...

My high school friends are cool with my interests since the majority of them are familiar with anime, I never had a classmate for my girlfriend though. I was so close with my high school female friends that I've never considered having one of them as my GF. Or you could say that I lacked courage and confidence

On the other hand, my male college friends are cool with my hobbies, but some of the females still think I'm weird... Well, it can't be helped I guess...

I spent maybe $35 total on those 2 figures that were Reiko Holinger and Catharine Blitzen. Then I just stopped caring what my mom thought about my stuff in general and put loli desktops on my computers and then she gave up so now when I get a figure in the mail or go to pick one up from my local comic book store that I order them from she says nothing.

I'm waiting until I move out to display figures and such. I already got Gunpla and Kamen Rider stuff everywhere in Ikea cases, but they known about those for the last 8 years. My parents would probably think I'm a pervert if I displayed figures, but luckily my girlfriend collects them too so she doesn't have a problem with them.

Due to you said you parents don't know about your figures, I'm guessing they don't know of the site either ^^I

My mom likes anime so she wouldn't care. My Dad has laughed at my figures, and Gunplas. My Grandma hasn't noticed yet which is good because she'd have a fit about it

I only have a few anime figures. I have a shed load of tabletop wargame figures my wife considers are complete rubbish. She thinks only prison inmates paint wargame figures

Hmmm, don't know if my ex-wife minded, but my housemate doesn't care, and my parents haven't visited my house in about 7 years, so... lol...

As for dust protection, my controversial view is this: "Don't protect it." Yeah, nobody wants to see a dusty figure, but in my experience with 80+ figures, and hand-cleaning 40+ of them recently [ http://www.xjaymanx.com/toybox/2008/07/05/blog-138-operation-rebox-completed/ ], hand-cleaning is the *best way* (although time-consuming) to re-acquaint yourself with the forgotten figures you bought months or years ago. It's easy to use a brush or air blower, but without handling them *close-up*, it's also too easy to forget them on the shelf or cabinet you rarely touch. Figures which I haven't thought about in months, are suddenly rediscovered when I hand-clean them. "Hey, I never noticed that before." "Wow, so that's how it fits." Etc.

The idea is similar to hand-washing your car and familiarizing yourself with all the various parts and curves and joints (and scratches). Sure it takes longer, but you *know* your car's little details significantly better *close-up* than car-washing them distantly from the comfort of your driver's seat. But that's just me. ^_^;

P.S. Waste your money *now*, because you might not be able to waste it *later*. (Believe me, I know.) Hey, that sounded pretty good! Please credit me, thanx, lol. ^.~

I've showed my mom and even my grandma all the figures I plan to buy and they've been fine with them and thought they were cute.

My dad on the other hand thinks I'm already wasting my money on all the manga and anime I buy so I'm sure he'd feel the same about a figure.

My dad will occasionally come in to my room (with many figures and in which there is no wall left uncovered with bishoujo posters) to watch the TV there when the one downstairs is in use, but neither he or my mum say much about it...to my face at least...not sure what they say behind my back.

Although, I once asked my mum if it was abnormal for me to like Justin Timberlake's music as a guy - she replied that it was far more abnormal for me to like little 2D girls :[

My brother is actually the one who gives me the hardest time about my figure collecting. He thinks I'm turning into a weirdo otaku by collecting them and says it's something sinister to be afraid of...
My parents don't want me wasting my money by collecting figures, but they're okay with it being my hobby, I personally think they find it funny that I get so happy just by collecting plastic ^^ Although when I bought a Togainu no Chi figure of Akira(The top of his pants are kinda unbuttoned but it's nothing gratuitous.) my mom gave me a raised eyebrow...
As for friends and bf's they don't seem to have a problem and some are even interested in collecting after seeing mine. Spread the love, right?

I'm still trying to find a case to display my figures. As for my parents, they think my figures are really nice. I only pick the best of the best you know (based on my standards). XD Same with my siblings. As for my gf, she's into it as well but she's not too keen on the ecchi ones especially the low skirt ones like the first Shuraki figure. XD

My dad doesn't believe in 'wasting' money, he often belives in 'saving up'. Even though I save 75% of my salary.. he thinks I'm wasting my money when I spend it on hobby-related merchandise. He'll moan about it but, otherwise he doesn't intervene much.
My mom is another story XD She watches anime on Animax from time to time and doesn't complain about my Otakuness... she likes us to spend family time together though, as I tend to stay in my room when being involved with figs, manga, anime etc. XD
My brother doesn't complain about the figs really and he knows about the eroge on my pc...kinda >.<
My ex was an Otaku, so it helped to have someone interested in the same things XD
Most of my friends are Otaku as well, anime, manga, military, music.. various types of Otaku ^-^

My family often reminds me to save up and not spend *too* much on my items, that's about it, really.
I'm quite lucky and I appreciate my current situation.

My mother likes practically all my figures, and is as much a moephile as I am. We watch anime together quite often. Sometimes she complains about big eyes, but doesn't seem to mind my Kanus (me: *points at Kanu's oppai* but aren't you bothered about those then? her: no, she's just a real woman. ...). My brother is less keen on them, but seems to like the (female) Figmas...

I've never gotten crap for buying Ignis, but she is my only figure. They have no problem with my Gunpla or other models, and as tempting as it is for my mother she dusts around the ships and tanks and lets me do that work. They do have problems with some of my side collections- star wars collectibles, vintage water guns (the REALLY powerful ones) etc. Oddly enough they havn't attacked me for "watching cartoons", but they are the kind of folk who would do so. Its not so much secrecy- they just havn't been bothered, and both they and I know that I don't care what their opinion is. None given, none wanted.

To all others: its your money that you earned, do what the heck you want with it =). Spend frugally though! Is all I have to say. Some people don't see the value of figures to other people- and maybe folks would understand if they learned about them and the laborious process it takes to make figures.

At best, comments should change from (1- Your buying dolls and wasting money?!?!) to (2- Hey, new site opened up and ships to X, this figure is on sale you should get it and I advise waiting on that $60 one!). I would take comment 2 with much more consideration, and not just that- respect. A suggestion, insult, and command are three entirely different things.

I have a few stories to tell about how my family noticed I had Anime figures in my life. One of those stories is detailed here: http://aspergers.dasaku.net/?p=178

Another one is when my mother started noticing that miniature girls had taken their place on my shelf where she was expecting me to dust. These were my Lucky Star Petit Nendoroids, but she didn't know what they were. She asked "What are these?" and I told her they were Anime figures from a show she'd never heard of. She smiled, and poked fun at me: "How much did they cost you?" she asked. Then she saw my Rei Ayanami Revoltech fig which she had never seen before, or anything like it. She was puzzled why she was holding "a big spear". After that she just told me to dust my figures and move them so I could dust some more.

My parents are completely fine with me having figures because I've collected things all my life, it's just that my mother sees it her maternal right to make fun of me for what I collect occasionally. My Dad is completely clueless about it all because his growing up in a country town and the first movie he saw having been an Elvis movie.

Well, my mum doesn't mind them and she likes the cute girl figures I have, dad seems to like my gundams. Though I do have some figures I've been wanting to buy that I'm sure they'll dislike, like Ignis the White and that valentine special Soniko, but I guess my sister can hide them in gift wraps and in a box. @_@

As for my girlfriend, well she loves cute girls, she's a bit of a perv herself anyways and rather proud of it. Also nearly all the girls I like she likes too, but she prefers the petite type. I usually prefer the ones that resemble her nicely, lol

My dad just wonders what I see with collecting figures, while my mom easily appreciates the cuteness of my miniature (SD) mecha. In particular, mom recognizes some of the mecha easily - Voltes V and any Mazinger - thanks to her firstborn son (my older brother) being born in the 70s.

She thinks my SOS-dan figures are cute.

I'm lucky my mom is so enamored of collectibles.

Frankly, neither of my parents really care that much. I think they probably think it's kind of a waste of money and I agree that they are a little expensive but I think they're so cool. So far I only have two REAL figures, Queen's Gate Alice (my favorite one) and a Revoltech Fraulein Ayanami Rei. The other figures I have are just gachapon and stuff but I'm hoping to expand my collection. I'm only fifteen though, so I don't have a job and I don't really get much money all the time so I wish the costs would get less expensive.

He's okay with me having them and he's not discouraging it, but I've been lectured from buying lots of expensive "toys" ^^;; I have revealing figures and cast off figures but dad still doesn't mind. Maybe it's because I'm a girl though. xD;; I just say I think the revealing ones are cute sooo there's no awkwardness...or misunderstandings ._.;;
