One Piece being censored in Thai - even though theres not much to see. Does this sort of anime censorship go on in your region?

The only censorship I remember seeing was when Dragon Ball was showing the second time on tv and they cut some parts. Although it was a year or two after it aired first I still remember when it aired for the first time back in 96 or so. Same thing happened on Dragon Ball Z with Freeza saga

Yeah, I remember that. On the Freeza saga, on the general-TV broadcasts they didn't show most of the "dismembered-freeza" bits. They did on the cable though.

we don't get censorship like that here, rather than covering something up, the entire scene is removed. although i don't understand why they censored nami's chest here, its not that offensive compared to some other animes

That's crazy. last time I saw some explicit stuff on TV was more than 10 years ago. The funny thing it was on Shang Hai Education Television. It was an anime about some volleyball team. They showed boobs in that show, as being 14 years old, i was really excited about that show.

I watch anime on AdultSwim and sometimes I end up crying myself to sleep... T_T

In the US they like to create an illusion that the anime that you're watching wasn't tampered with (besides that fact that it was dubbed).

They do a lot of digital editing for stuff released on American TV. They removed all the blood from Naruto. Melfina from Outlaw Star got a bikini when ever she was in the tube and all references to alcohol and gambling were removed from the dialog. Even the transformation animation of Sailor Moon was changed to down play nudity. If I remember right an entire episode of Pokemon was dropped from the American release because of guns being pointed at someone. Basically the more kid aimed the anime is the more it gets chopped.

Luckily when they release most anime on DVD you can get the unedited versions, Dragon Ball and Pokemon being the most noticeable exception.

Plenty of cuts in my local TV, but not like I'm watching a watered-down anime raped with terrible, 10-bux-a-session dubbing.

In America, they edit the scene so they don't look censored. Like One Piece, they have to recolor all the guns to make them looks fake, remove the cook's cigarette and make it to a candy on a stick, they have to make any other weapons look fake, and much much more.

It depends on what means you're viewing the anime over here. If you're watching TV or rent from a big name rental chain ie. Blockbuster, naughty scenes are totally edited out. If you go to a anime specialty shop they'll have original uncut movies. Usually all censorship info is indicated on the back cover. Sometimes you'll find mosaic censor, but nowadays pretty much anything goes. Is that tenticle doing what I think its doing?

They do censor Anime here, it is almost unwatchable in it's "edited for television", "localized" version. That's why I watch fansubs theyare in their pure unfettered form only the translations may be a filter of some sort I guess.

In Germany we don't have censorship on anything, but all Animes which air here during noon (which most/all do) are cut. Every few second there’s something German Kids can't see. Like fights in Dragonball, Naruto, One Piece and Ranma for example. Kids here never see a punch on the face or a kick or something, but just the result like flying away and falling down. Furthermore there’s no blood here, weapons get deleted and the translations are bad. Really ... without Fansubs and the internet, I would just watch fu*%&d (sorry) up Animes like all the Kids around here do. If you want to see the cuts around her, go and visit www.animedigital.de . They compare Drangonball, One Piece, Conan, Naruto and Inuyasha episodes from Japan and Germany… HORRIBLE! Just Click on a Show, choose an episode and EVERY Picture you see there got cut out or was edited…

Dropping computers, starting all over again at Journalism
Censoring stuff that way ends up getting more attention than if it wasn't censored at all.
People end up going to the Internet or something just to check out what was censored.

Well, in Brazil they just cut the whole anime. Chop chop chop. Sometimes they just ruin the whole episode... it ends up making no sense at all.

Lucky me I NEVER watch it on the TV. I hate dubs. I know nothing of japanese yet I'd rather watch anime the original voices and understand nothing than watch it dubbed, either in portuguese or english.

Just a personal opinnion though. Lots of people I know are not that extreme on the subject...

Well censorship is everywhere, as for Once Piece and in other Anime they tend make the blood black, and take out the curses. In One piece the make the characters drink milk, and power juice instead of the alcohol. Also they took
out his cigarette and gave him a lollipop...... Dam censorship !

Wow that censoring is ridiculous..well..the Anime here in the US usually refrain from showing the blood. Which kind of kills it for anime like Bleach. And yeah, they do censor the blood in the dubbed bleach.

Wow. That's about the worst I have ever seen! It's kinda weird, really, considering some of the sexually explicit things I've seen happening right in front of me in Thailand (especially Bangkok and Pattaya). I wonder-- could that be due to the significant Islamic population inhabiting the country?

Cartoon Network for Latin America, censors some shows. For example they were broadcasting Sakura Taisen and one of the villains had a rather noticeable cleavage and they painted red the whole area. It looked so out of place.

Hmm that is really weird I wonder what kind of censorship laws they have in Thailand - in some Islamic communities conservatism is rather extreme - but whats the pre-dominant theocracy in Thailand? Considering the whole lady boy culture and tourist traps that focus on sexuality this is really wacky.

Well when anime was common on open tv they didnt censor it at all (well they didnt air some episodes of Utena and the infamous porygon chaptee of pokemon). Now the only way to see "new anime is via a cable television company or a sattelite one, good that neither cartoon network or animax censors anime.
