Japanese Game Shows Go Overseas

...So it looks like yet another piece of Japanese culture is on its way to conquer America.

I don't know much about Japanese game shows - most of it limited to little clips on the 'Net and naked people sliding down ski slopes with massage chairs. I was reading this article in my local newspaper however (the Toronto Star) and it seems those little clips on the Internet have generated enough interest that American TV has taken notice. "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" is being aired on ABC and basically pits two unwitting teams of American contestants against each other in Tokyo.

The article notes that the most consistent theme of Japanese game shows tends to be "humiliation and embarassment". Definitely true from what little I've seen. >< A theory is that while American game show contestants are in for the money, Japanese contestants are in for escapism - a sort of stress relief from "a culture [that] is really about not being the loud one in the room and not being noticed".

Anyway, the full article is here. I had to take the image from the article since I know so little about game shows otherwise. x_x Anyone here who regularly watches Japanese game shows? If you do, which ones are your favourites?

I've watched some hilarious Japanese game shows. I wish they aired them here. Ones were you have to try not to laugh at this person learning English. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YwoP0thR1k or you have to fit through this odd tetris shaped hole in moving wall or you'll fall into some gross water. I love Japanese game shows there a good laugh XD.

I remember watching those a while back. Some of the participants aced it in a way I could have never imagined, but the rest cracked me up to no end XD

If you can really call it a game show, I watch Sasuke (Ninja Warrior) regularly and I can't wait to watch this show tonight.

Same here. It was not that long ago one of the local cannals sent human tetris, the studio was an exact match of the Japanes version.

I personally had no complaints about this show, I Survived A Japanese Game show. They seem to use the Japanese show "Majide" to put the Americans to the test. I'll keep watching, but their earlier show "Wipeout" deserves a slit in the throat. It is a cheap, and boring, ripoff of Takeshi's Castle (as we Americans call it, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge).

I just watched the first episode today...pretty decent...but I kinda hate the contestants cluelessness about Tokyo's tech. [Like the toilet's remote and etc][But then again...I guess I'd be pretty intrigued by it too...]
Some Japanese gameshows...that Human Tetris one, Takeshi's Castle. There's also a one where the contestants enter a school and your not aloud to laugh. If you do, you get smacked in the @ss with a shinai [a kendo bamboo sword]...funny

My wife and I love this show. Very funny watching them compete but even better are the punishments when they lose.
