Destroid Tomahawk

Gundams up until Endless Waltz iz alright, but Freedom with its excessive guns and Exia looking too much like Temjin from Virtual On, is personally is less appealing.

I think I lean towards the older designs. They were much simpler back then, and a bit more utilitarian than most of the designs you see nowadays. That isn't to say that the old designs   
were more realistic.

Ehrm, in general I like the mecha designs in almost all real genre mecha anime. Even if it's from the 80's, heck the Zeta Gundam remains one of my favorites. Recent design favorites include the Arbalest from FMP and the Lancelot from Geass.

I'm not saying that I don't like Super robots, it's just I prefer the "Real" designs more. Favorite Super Robots would include RahXephon (O_o), The Gravion variants, the SRX and the Aquarion.(Well, those Super Robots are recently designed anyaways)

I'm not a fan of mechas, but I suppose I prefer the Macross VF series. The multiple missiles thing seem rather over-the-top, though I suppose it's part of its appeal to fans.

Got to show my age to say this, but I love this Destroid design and have loved it ever since FASA stole it. @_@;;;
There's something real about the utilitarian look: every thing is just sensible. The only thing non-nonsensical about this toy is the price... which, if I recall, previous 1/60 scale non-transforming Yamato stuffs were always as such... I can only hope I will find it for less than the suggested $95 retail price.

Hm... I remember I use to have a toy of a destroid from long ago. As for mech designs, I appreciate vintage designs, though a lot of the new ones today pays homage to the old like Gurren Lagann.

I definitely like the vintage mecha design much more.  Most of the mecha designs nowadays are more organic and less technical looking.  I like my mecha with a big of edge and simplicity as well.

The Tomahawk looks quite new-age to me and remids me of Battletech at the same time... XD But I can take any design; I'm not one of those who see MS Gundam and go like "oh god my eyes" or something like that. But those that I give really high regards to are the SRW designs. The entire game franchise itself is a gigantic collection of mecha designs from quite a lot of different mechanical designers; makes them unique from each other (but not necessarily realistic, lol; remember Bellzute?)

I think the designs coming out now are more for based more on form than function. I mean you have beautiful designs but as mentioned sometimes just to much equipment/armor hanging off them. While the vintage Tomohawk above is more militarized and are just machines of war more or less. They have a different style all themselves, nothing fancy or showing just a walking pile of armor and weapons. The way I like it, not to dismiss the new designs though. I love all mecha equally :)

Sure, I like 'em all, especially when they release nice versions like this that were improved visually, but is the same mecha. It will come down to articulation for me. Seeing that this is a 1/60 I would say that price is reasonable, if the articulation is there.

I used to own this mech when I was a kid

but it was a die cast frame with three optional outer shell in plastic, one of them was Destroid, the other was a mech with 2 large barrel (Now I know it's a missile launcher), the other have 2 vulcan-like canon.

Looking back, that toy would've cost a fortune now :(

The new mecha designs today like Gundam 00 and Geass are horrible examples of fans services for younger shallow-minded otakus. Meanwhile, immature gaijins like Robotech, Transformers G1 and Voltron fans still has yet to grow out of their bootlegged 80s mecha animes. I doubt if these 2 groups are mecha fans at all...

No matter how big the generation gap is, the only thing that keeps people interested will be "Good Designs" and always be evergreen no matter which time you're in. 

By the way, I've seen that mech before and I can say that it's kinda too sluggish compared to the "Big Dog" developed by DARPA, US military.

totally agree with you on the "shallow-minded otakus" but i'm not sure they are young or not. too bad they din't had the chance to look at the older series so they can compare fairly... how do you know brand X shampoo is better if you din't try on shampoo Y??

very dissappointed in the mechs in gundam oo season 2, they din't really change the design.. it is just my own personal opinion that the new gundam series are in fact a 20+ mins of almost uninterrupted commercial for Ba**ai's product such as gunplas

no comment on your 2nd comment about immature gaijins since i din't really watch voltrons or transformer etc. i only watched macross series and gundam series mech anime...not a hardcore mecha fans myself

i like all of them!...what i like about "old school" mechas like the Destroid here is their closeness to engineering reality. they appear build-able in the real world than the gundams. although judging from the architectural and engineering marvels we've done recently,gundam-type-designed androids might not be that far off to build :D

Totally reminds me of Mechwarrior! Any one play that game for PC?(I mean the OLD SCHOOL Mechwarrior) It's hard for me to choose between the two...but, I'd go with vintage, the designs are awesome. Partly because they look like a tank on steroids with legs attached! And 
mostly because I grew up with that design back in the day.
