Your Face

Uh oh...
Somebody took a picture of the guy who runs Akibablog and uploaded it. Akibablog has employed some lawyers to go after the ISP of the uploader and asking them to reveal the home address of the uploader.
Unfortunately Akibablog is getting quite a bashing from the otaku community for doing this who are saying things like "just because Akibablog covers faces in photos, it does not mean he can take pics of anybody he likes..."

Which brings me to a question - do you mind your photo being uploaded to the internet - regardless of whether it was uploaded by you or not?
Via Hatena.

Ah, nearly forgot to mention - got this unrelated pic from Moe Imouto somewhere I think.

I guess it could become a problem if somebody else uploads a REALLY BAD picture of your face. But it's disrespectful nonetheless to do so... Celebrities train themselves to look good (most) of the time, I think, whether intentionally or not, so that this doesn't happen and that when someone posts a pic it's not too bad. but a blogger, probably not. Maybe lawyers is going over the top though. If Akibablog doesn't like it, can't the blogger just deny the picture was his?

If I uploaded it myself, of course I wouldn't mind, since I can choose which photo I want to share...
If a stranger uploaded my picture, I would feel kinda insecure, as if I'm being stalked by someone.

I don't know how I'd feel about somebody else uploading my image on the net... I guess if I didn't know I wouldn't really care but if someone did, I'd feel a bit creeped out.

Lovely pic, I tried finding the big version on Moe Imouto but had no luck. Looks like of like Mizuki Kawashita (Ichigo 100%) style of girl.

Look at it this way, I'm certain the Star Wars kid wished he didn't take that video. But he did and some pranksters uploaded it into the Internet. The rest, as they say, is history.

Depends I guess. If you happen to take pictures of a large crowd its just overkill to start hiding every face. But if you have closeups of people you could cover them up, depending on how compromising the pic is. If it's something harmless, then where's the problem?

If someone goes around snapping photos of people to put on a popular site, they should be prepared for others to snap photos of them. This kind of seems hypocritical to me.

I can snap/upload your picture, but you can't have mine. Blurred or otherwise.

Personally, I wouldn't like it if someone I didn't know put a picture of me on the internet. What bothers me more is someone was able to take a picture of me and I had no idea they did it. Even if they asked after that to use my picture I would probably still be bothered.

Depends on what the intention.
You know, when it comes to privacy, the Internet is a dangerous place...

Specially when there's such a thing as an angry mob after you.

The one thing that's said is that the guy from AkibaBlog was never disrespectful with people he took pics, and he never revealed any identities.

I think it's a bit too much for people to create a fuss over censored pics, and they've gone too far actually taking his picture and publishing it.

He never did that to no one. And he's just doing his job anyways.

But it's an Internet problem I guess... lots of whiners. You take a picture, to through the trouble of censoring faces and everything that might identify someone, and people will still complain and do such things...

So many things I wonder about when things like this happen... firstly I have to say that I always read Akiba blog, and it's not like he goes out there just to take pictures of specific people, there is always a reason behind it... and he always goes to the trouble to mosaic out every face... I think that's damn impressive, many blogs would just leave it, I'm quite sure.

Next thing... I wonder why it matters to him if his photo is exposed... surely, being the blogger on Akiba that he is, his identify as an otaku shouldn't really worry him? Is he that much of an introvert? :|

Meh. Guess there are reasons for everything.

Someone else uploading them? Well, depends on his intentions. If he wants to make me look bad then I'll sue his ass into an orbit around moon, if he doesn't remove it very soon.

I don't mind much. Even if it makes me look like foolish - as long as it's not brainless HAHA-LOOK-HE'S-STUPID. As long as they show more intelligence than a doorknob.

I think it has to do with the fact that I post videos myself and people often get caught unintentionally - being asked for permission is always better, but sometimes it's impractical or plain impossible to do so.

I an usually the man behind the camera. There is not much reason why should I take people's photos in New Mexico. But if I were to go the Japan that would be a different story. I would have to carry a pad of release/permission forms that good photographers do. If they can take a picture of me outside of work, go ahead and do it and I don't care.

Just because they didn't photoshop your face doesn't mean that you have to freak out about your actual face that others see when they met you personally.

I'd rather be real and ugly than fakely pretty on the internet. That would be living a lie.

If it's a friend of mine uploading a photo that has me in it, then I wouldn't really mind (although I'd hope that it didn't look bad lol - yeah you can look like a goddess in the real life, but with a badly taken photos, with a bad angle and bad lights, you will still turn into a ghost). If I accidentally got in a photo someone took when they are taking photos in the public (coz we can't just choo the crowd away whenever we want to take some photos in the public lool), then I wouldn't really mind too, unless I'm really noticeable lol. But I do mind it if someone take photos of me and put them online without authorization.
Once, me and my bf were sitting on a table on the back of a group of kids. A man started to take photos of them, which also captured us well (since we were really at their back). Although he surely noticed our discomforted expressions, he still took the photos without respecting us. I felt like punching that old man.. ~_~#

I don't mind if people use a picture of me for humor or joke for fun purposes but not when it was intended for something bad or insult.

One time, someone took the photo of my room with my collection and basically bashed it saying 'this is a room of stupid otaku blah blah' without my consent. I only found out when someone told me that someguy were doing that and it did not go easy on my mind. That's my belief.

Hm..I think it depends on the circumstances. If I'm at a Con, and in the crowd, it's no biggie. If I did Cosplay, I think it'd somewhat be expected.
Though, if I'm shopping, working or at class or something, I think I'd be happier about if the person said "Hey, I like how this photo turned out, mind if I upload it to my site?"

The laws in the U.S. differ from those in Japan. If your photo is used to make money without your consent then you can have it removed. If not then its public domain and is legal. Personally, i don't have a problem with it.

You should wear stormtrooper armour everywhere to hide your face :)

I am on the side of the Akibablog guy because as mentioned before he mosaics out the face of people.

Also he needs to keep his identity as hidden as possible because his blog is well known and he could have people who dislike him. This differs from the average person because the effect of having an average person's identity revealed is minimal. This applies to links being drawn between real identity and an online identity, for example, even if the Akibablog guy gets his photo taken and uploaded, if nobody knows that he is linked to anything else then it is ok because for the general public he is effectively anonymous.
