Hmmm... when i was still in PH, i used to stare at people whos looks are surely not Filipino looking. It's just the fascination of wow! he/she is different from me. Over staring like what that guy did is a bit much plus the fact that the woman is wearing a pikachu cosplay adds to the staring time so she should have expected it.

it's freaky getting stared at sometimes...I don't know but some Filipinos have some naivete about it or gaijin gets preferential treatment :P
I find it a blessing that my appearance betray my roots cause I hate getting asked rude questions about being Filipino (not that i'm ashamed of it).

Yeah... I always end up being stared by those "pure" filipinos... I'm a Chi-fil but looked like JP or KR... most of my friends said... I don't look like Chi or Fil at all... it's not that bad but I hate being stared at...

my looks never betrayed my roots but when i start to do otaku stuffs like wearing costumes, people just stares at like crazy. they are like radars sensing abnormalities within range. its like someone is stabbing me by their eyes....enough. just don't mind them, let's just get it on...hehehehe

well it's kinda frightening when I was stopped around several countries being thought of a illegal foreigner or something well...when in asia that is..
but hey, sometimes when a good otaku strut their stuff, you know that you're making a good impression to people who find what we love as something "weird" and "odd" ;)

I never stared at or was too fascinated enough by foreigners while i was in the PH. Back in grade school, we had an exchange student come over from Florida, I was the only one who actually talked to the girl and make friends with her. Asians can be really xenophobic sometimes.

I get stared at all the time in Japan, but it's no big deal. At first I used to get a little annoyed, but it's definitely not worst than America where people should know better.

Just a gross exaggeration for comedic purposes. You know, like if she expressed herself as: "Don't you see the issue at stake here and how I'm hurt by the biased vision of others? *in Pikachu's costume* And now, you see it, buddy? Do you? Huh? HUH?! Give me a chance to prove myself beyond what I may look like to you, pal." Stuff like that.

OH NOES It's Pikazilla! *runs for her life*
Welp, i wouldn't stare at that, look once and laugh my ass off rather. =)
It's suposed to be funny and not serious, or? ^^v
But i heard bout those Kigurumi people that wear these Pyjamas outside too, there are plenty of YouTube videos too.
It's good for a laugh when you see it once but then it just gets a bit weird. ;)
What makes me wonder is why these Pyjamas are called Kigurumi and then there are theye cosplayers with the anime face masks that are called Kigurumi too.
Seems the Pyjama version got a bit more popular due some animes too (Serial Experiments Lain - Bear Pyjama // Moetan - Sumis Cat Pyjama ... and so on).

I always felt that it is not only a notion of mere racism, but also insecurity... People are just unable to control their emotions and inner fears. Could it be because of ties with a rigid traditional system ("Those people are dangerous! Don't go near them or talk to them!" heard when a kid and never challenging those views) or simply the fact of never challenging one own's point of view (reputation included?). And this is not only about certain people of the Japanese society; I do know people like that, including relatives (who annoy me a lot because of that... Even if it's only one of the reasons why I dislike them).

i think it has to do with stubborness. my grandfather was the same way.
i remember a time when my mom, grandpa, and i were at the hospital(i forgot the reason why) and my mom asked a doctor a question(she happened to be Asian) and my grandpa blurted out "don't ask her, she probably won't understand"
i was so ashamed to be there and be seen with him at that moment. the doctor didn't say a thing, but she had a look of shock on her face.
my point being- don't assume someone's a certain way until you get to know them a bit.

Good point there. But I guess it was more rigid with the generation of our grand-parents; nowadays on the contrary, there is a risk of lack of respect towards elders...
And yes, you can't assume in just one look. Knowing the person well (including his/her personality, history, social environment and behavior patterns are most necessary to live with him/her (or at least not stir unnecessary conflicts).

Well I don't blame them for staring because its not that common to see a black person in Japan. Staring does not mean racism, of course it doesn't look good when someone is completely staring at you but I find it normal because Japan does not have the mix of races America has.
As long there's no violence or racist comments everything is ok.

It's not racism!!!
That word gets used so much, especially by black people. Just because someone stares at you doesn't mean you are somehow lower then them. Don't wear a Pikachu suit if you don't want to be starred at.
AS far as I am concerned, anytime someone uses the term 'racism' when something is clearly not a race issue (like this person) then the person calling racism is really the racist. We have a LOT of that in the US. Black people that get fired from a job because they are lazy and worthless, it's automatically racism. A cop hit a black criminal it is racism. A cop hit a white criminal, it is ok because he is a criminal doing something wrong.

Woah woah easy there "especially by black people".
My friend, if you watched the video until the end like Danny suggested, you would've understood this was a joke. Tokyocomedy.com takes lots of controversial topics and makes light of them. I've known people who have been refused jobs in Japan because of their skin color (and yes, they were black people).
Please be more mindful of your words in future comments.

I don't find this a serious situation, surely where we live there has to be some racist people.
I would stare at her I admit, look what she is wearing! I'll just laugh about this, nothing serious. But, I've heard of such racism in Tokyo from people who have experienced it such as not being able to go into restaurants and being called a stupid foreginer when they do something wrong.
I have to admit too that I'm somewhat scared of going to Tokyo and being treated badly, like a "stupid foreigner".
Oh Danny! Who wouldn't stare at a random Storm Trooper walking down the street?

This video either is not serious on the subject or just a satire of something else. The minute she donned the Pikachu hood it probably does it for me. Poor guy is probably staring at her because of the costume rather than who she is.

Everytime i go back to Japan, i get racist comments. It doesn't even matter if i look and am Japanese. I still get called gaijin as soon as people find out i'm from the U.S.
Conclusion: Looking Asian doesn't fool people... you gotta live there all your life to not get racist comments.

Not everyone. Most of the comments come from students my age. Some older people, when they found out that i've lost my kanji-reading abilities and taste for some native foods, gave that "yup, she's a foreigner" look and treated me like one.
