Phallus Festival

Phallus Festival
Hijacked from member R-1 who beat me to posting this. Never been and never will. Anybody want to attend such a festival? May want to attend an "eye" festival however.

Words fail me...

Looks like they're having fun though, so why spoil it?

women depicted as sex objects? I might say the same of the the international porn industry but not here. your jumping to conclusions here. this is just a simple folk festival celebrating fertility. it may seem strange to you but this thing has been going on for years. Google Hounen Matsuri to read up more, you'll find similar pictures with MEN doing the same thing.

Not a big deal, nor is it weird. Look at any Roman decorations that have been uncovered by anthropologists. Rome was considered one of the greatest societies ever and they had windchimes, statues, you name it, shaped like penii. I'm sure the theme is the same, too, to worship the power of life and procreation and et cetera et cetera. Just because all of the puritanical countries have sticks up their collective ass.... Besides, who doesn't enjoy a giant wang festival? Now where's that raccoon with the giant balls....

Yeah... read about this a long time ago.

It's an ancient festival... women touches, and I've even seen some pics of women rubbing/sitting (no, it was not pr0nz :P ) on wooden versions of (pa)chinko asking a bless from the fertility God.

Yeah, it's kinda weird for us catholic western devils o_O, but just a tradition for them.

Dunno if I would attend it too... maybe if I had a wife and we were planning on having kids.

My I just point out, that this festival happens in a town (Kawasaki), in the province next to Tokyo, and it being such a local thing, barely anybody in the big city now about its existence at all?

Just to put things a bit in context.

Of course, foreigners do like making Japan a weirder country than it really is so, the festival being such a weirdness, it is an obligated visit according to the guidebooks, which causes hordes of foreigners to go there too (like myself), besides anyone else but the locals from Kawasaki.

Those understanding Spanish, might want to have a look at my "report" last year at http://elmimmo.wordpress.com/2007/05/03/kanamara-matsuri/

Reminds me of one episode of Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (the seventh to be exact), where guys were carrying various things and people (including the most bizarre ones) on portable shrines.

This is the 'fertility festival'. I am looking for the specific URL where it is mentioned in English. It is held in Kawasaki at the Kawasaki Daishi temple [Kawasaki-Daishi on the Keikyo Daishi Line].
I would be interested in going to this. But it is usually held the same weekend as the _Cinema Wasteland_ movie exposition in suburban Cleveland, OH. That is almost as much fun (from what this seems to be), but it costs a lot less money to go to Cleveland.
[I can't find it yet. I'll try again later.]
