What happens when an F111 fighter jet collides with a pelican? The F111 looses big time. Via 10e.
OWNED! though, if the pelican survives then it's a definite win, but i'm sure the bird ate it hardcore. and the other party...just lost money...lots of it haha
See that stain on the side of the f111? That's the pelican...or what's left of him. In all his red glory ;)
Wow!! How the hell did that happened?! O_O; Even for a pelican, that's pretty hardcore >_<
Woohoo, go pelicans!
Are you serious? A simple bird did that much damage? HP -9000000! (I don't know much about RPG's, correct me RPG people if I'm wrong!)
Your RPG sense is right, but if something has upwards 9000000 HP and surives after losing that amount, it'll probably would be more apt to use a Super Robot Wars reference.
Well, with a jet moving a near supersonic speeds, any object that impacts it will cause sever damage.
What the...? How did that happen?
recocheing bird flying into the cockpit without even focusing in the air <.<
I bet the pelican disintegrated, rip..
the pelican liquefied more like it.
The force of the impact with the bird and the fighter going at whatever crazy speed it was doing is how it happened.
Time to rear more pelicans. air supiority
WAHAHA LOL
LOL!!!
F111 able to fly up to Mark-5 (5 times faster than the speed of sound), so the pilot can barely see the shape of a pelican/birds while at that speed, so it cant avoid it & have to smash into hose poor living creatures, just like roadkill. These case happen from time to time on commercial airline, but so far no incident had been reported that any plane were brought down by a bird which cost casualty & injury, luckily............
mach 5 is a bit of an exaggeration there. the f-111 is only capable of mach 2.5 (it is a bit old in design) but still at that speeds this incident is still possible.
What I wonder is: how do they know it was a pelican if they fly at that speed?
someone from downtown Sydney must have filed a complaint: someone drop a pelican on me head! ^^;
or what left of a pelican...
I have heard of one actually. A bird got sucked into the engine of an old Chinese fighter, causing engine failure. The pilot could have bailed out, but realising that it could have crashd into a village if not controlled, he avoided crashing at the village at the cost of his life.
As far as I know commercial planes are usually larger than war planes so birds shouldn't damage them as easily, I think. ^^
Birds are the bane of airplanes in the air, since it is far easier to collide with one than another airplane. Birds are also big enough to deal considerable damage at high speeds (on the plane's side) to the engines if it gets into those, so yes, birds are pretty dangerous. I am surprised the plane came back in (roughly) one piece.
I've seen a fair share of bird strikes (that's what you call a bird vs aircraft collision) through the years, and this is quite a sight. Haven't seen one which had damage on this scale. But taking a look at the rest of the photos, it's can be considered a moderate repair job, mainly to the nose area, compared to replacing an entire wing off a C-130, that is so much more work. These days when newer aircrafts are made out of composite material, I would love to see the effect of a bird strike on those.
Well unless the damage continues towards the fuselage, than that's alot of work!!! I pity the airframe/structure specialist working on this aircraft then.
You sound like an Air Force Technician... this means all your admin matters go through me muahahahaha
I AM an Air Force Tech, well for only 5 more weeks. ORD lor!!
damn.... 1 year to go
CRITICAL HIT 999,999HP DAMAGE!
Its 999.998 HP 1 more touch it dies
I'm assuming that an F-111 has 1,000,000HP.
I'm surprised the plane was still able to fly land with its aerodynamics compromised like that.
Wow.. what a cheap fighter jet... it's made of spaghetti and sawdust. :P Just kidding... I know it's made of plywood. :P One strong pelican... probably kinda nervous, and radiated with gamma rays?
So are those blood stains on the plane's right side?
So someone noticed other than me? :D Yes, that be the birds blood!
pelicans are pretty large birds...and their beaks are like missiles!!
ouch! I wonder how the pilot still managet to land the plane with that kind of damage. enemies of the united states should forget about building weapons and start investing in kamikaze pelicans. ^^
waitaminute... I see a kangaroo logo on the firetruck... Australia. ^^;
Wheres The Pelican! -.-"
probably somewhere in the plane's intake.
No, what's left of him is now an additional paint job to the plain. I take it that the red puddle on the side is the pelican's fresh coating, so to speak ;)
i'm glad it wasn't the canopy... iv'e seen what geese can do to cessnas... it's like takumi going dowhill then a chicken crosses the road and flies up to windshield height in surprise...
or the wing. ^^
Australian Airforce needs to get rid of those f-111s
They will in 2010 they will be replaced by F/A-18Fs
Not really. The F111 is an excellent strike aircraft. Old and maintenance-intensive, yes, but they're very good at what they do. The Super Hornet, while a very capable multi-role aircraft, is slower, much shorter ranged, and carries a significantly smaller payload. They're not really a suitable replacement, but until the F35 is ready, they're probably the best option. The Super Hornet is a multi-role aircraft, though, so it will be useful for a wide range of missions, as opposed to the Aardvark, which is a dedicated attack aircraft.
lucky they didn't die... from that damage the plane could have just nosed down and crashed big time.. big crater... thats pilot skill to have landed that damn thing in one peice! props to him.. or her.. worked for the military for awhile.. bird damage like this and engine damage are big time fears for pilots.. just a little screw or bolt left in the wrong place will make for a bad day!
Ouch! As an aerospace engineering student, this hurts even more...
the F-111 is not is a strategic bomber not a fighter
OMG! That pelican is amazing... Send pelicans to war!
Oh wow ^^;;; After reading, I did some google and found out that the pelican after making a mess out of the plane's ray-dome got bounced and got straight into the starboard (right) engine cause it to fail and also cause some damages to the wing as well. The pilot manages to keep the plane airborne for about 30 minutes before performing good emergency landing at the nearest airfield. Go here for more article: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,23562771-952,00.html
In that case I'd say the airplane won this battle. That's taking in to consideration that the plane still flew, while the pelican was probably scattered across a few square miles of the pacific... :P
now thats one heck of a skilled pilot... under normal circumstance, the plane would have been gone by then...
omg that's amberly airbase!
HA!!! They should have used metal in stead of carbon fiber...lol....
that pelican is fukken GAR XDD
Sanger Zombolt's pet? XD
They eat pigeon! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNNl_uWmQXE They are hella GARRRRR
Those aussies love them F-111 "Ardvark" bombers...neat, even if its a rather old design, lucky it only cracked to nose and then hit the windshield...
And quoting from Lord Genome in Gurren Lagann's final episode: RASENGAN, OVERLOAD!
Insane, I feel so bad for the pilot. That plane got a real spanking.
I"m speechless. And I vote that they should make the A-10 the bulk of their forces.
wait wait if 1 pellican did that much damage to that plane, imagine what a flock of pellicans could do! *gasp*
Wow.. Those pelicans sure pack a punch.. They are the nature's version of the missile..
Well, now we would have some defense mechanisms should our country be attacked by jetfighters: KAMIKAZE PELICAN TROOPS #7, LAUNCH!!
According to this site, http://kensingtonvictoria.com/blog/2008/04/20/australian-f-111-vs-pelican-at-550kph-pics/ the pelican did a 2 hit combo by ripping the plane's tip and choked the engine with its body.
I guess poorer countries should just keep huge flocks of birds around and release them if someone attacks them.
If it works for Indiana Jones...
Brings new meaning to the words Bird Strike.
who needs an air defense system? just send loads of pelicans up into the sky ;)
Damn that's crazy. what the hell was that bird made out of? Actually we know that already, now the question goes to what the hell did they make that plane out of? lol good stuff though, damn, now we can just create the untimate anti-air defense. Release tons of birds at high altitudes and enemy planes will just crash into them and go down. cheap and simple, the perfect solution to out high defense budget.
how big was the pelican for do that??? (or f111 are made with paper...)
pelican = dumb fire anti-aircraft missile XD Looking for cheap effective arms for the financially inept evil genius? well look no further! We've got specially trained pelicans for sale at a rate of 25 U.S. Dollars! Buy 2 for the price of one this month only! But wait, theres more! Make yours3lf known in the evil genius world and finally be invited to the Council of Doom's monthly "Laser on the Moon, Probable!" expo! *warning, pelican may ,and will, be dangerous. do not feed them sharp, combustible, nuclear, or other hazardous materials. do not zombify and unleash onto the human populace. If ingested, please call your local carpenter and arrange for a proper zombie and radiation proof coffin to be made for your size. PeliCo is not responsible for any and all damage caused by pelicans to your enemies, your allies, and/or yourself. Use adult supervision.*
SA-18a Russian made surface to air anti-aircraft missile. "Potentially" able to bring down US made F-111 fighter/bomber. Price $14,499. Pelican, "definitely" able to bring down US F-111. Price,.. 1 egg
how come the inside of the nose of the plane looks like that? Seems like the plane is held together by straw.
yeah.. look like some kind of plywood torn apart. I thought it is supposed to be made up of some carbon fibres and alloys stuff
RAF is the only remaining operator of the General Dynamic F-111. But yeah, at Mach 2.5, theoretical max speed, a lot of things can damage a plane.
it's a wonder that he landed with that nose!!!
The nose on most military aircraft is just a fiberglass shell covering the radar. If you were on the water with a cigarette (very fast) boat and hit a pelican the damage would be just as bad. Of course with the aircraft not having any control structures damaged and only one engine shut down it was still flyable. The boat would probably tear itself apart and would definitely end up on the bottom. Neither is good.
bird strike kills... seriously... but I am sure the pelican didn't come out with a scratch
try pelican swarm counter-measure for air-to-air combat O_o pilot "radar detects large unidentified flying object at 12'o clock at large velocity" "argh... can't shake it" "impact in 3,2,1,..." BOOM!
Have a look at this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YJf1okwb-5Y
HOLY. . . . that is a total miracle. that is got to be the most scariest moments for a jet engineer
OWNED!!!!
