What happens when an F111 fighter jet collides with a pelican?
The F111 looses big time.

Your RPG sense is right, but if something has upwards 9000000 HP and surives after losing that amount, it'll probably would be more apt to use a Super Robot Wars reference.

Well, with a jet moving a near supersonic speeds, any object that impacts it will cause sever damage.

The force of the impact with the bird and the fighter going at whatever crazy speed it was doing is how it happened.

F111 able to fly up to Mark-5 (5 times faster than the speed of sound), so the pilot can barely see the shape of a pelican/birds while at that speed, so it cant avoid it & have to smash into hose poor living creatures, just like roadkill. These case happen from time to time on commercial airline, but so far no incident had been reported that any plane were brought down by a bird which cost casualty & injury, luckily............

mach 5 is a bit of an exaggeration there. the f-111 is only capable of mach 2.5 (it is a bit old in design) but still at that speeds this incident is still possible.

I have heard of one actually. A bird got sucked into the engine of an old Chinese fighter, causing engine failure. The pilot could have bailed out, but realising that it could have crashd into a village if not controlled, he avoided crashing at the village at the cost of his life.

As far as I know commercial planes are usually larger than war planes so birds shouldn't damage them as easily, I think. ^^

You are right. However I heard about a case where a plane had to turn around right after takeoff because it hit a bird and it penetrated the hull and destroyed the radar. It's somewhat unsafe to fly at 800-850 km/h without a radar and a hole in the front.

The most dangerous thing that can happen would likely be if the engines dies. This is why jet engines has to be bird proof. A commercial jet engine has to be tested and survive 50 chickens in 5-10 sec or something like that (imagine a whole group of birds being sucked though the engine right after takeoff).

I've seen a fair share of bird strikes (that's what you call a bird vs aircraft collision) through the years, and this is quite a sight. Haven't seen one which had damage on this scale. But taking a look at the rest of the photos, it's can be considered a moderate repair job, mainly to the nose area, compared to replacing an entire wing off a C-130, that is so much more work. These days when newer aircrafts are made out of composite material, I would love to see the effect of a bird strike on those.

Well unless the damage continues towards the fuselage, than that's alot of work!!! I pity the airframe/structure specialist working on this aircraft then.

Not really. The F111 is an excellent strike aircraft. Old and maintenance-intensive, yes, but they're very good at what they do. The Super Hornet, while a very capable multi-role aircraft, is slower, much shorter ranged, and carries a significantly smaller payload. They're not really a suitable replacement, but until the F35 is ready, they're probably the best option. The Super Hornet is a multi-role aircraft, though, so it will be useful for a wide range of missions, as opposed to the Aardvark, which is a dedicated attack aircraft.

worked for the military for awhile.. bird damage like this and engine damage are big time fears for pilots.. just a little screw or bolt left in the wrong place will make for a bad day!

Oh wow ^^;;;

After reading, I did some google and found out that the pelican after making a mess out of the plane's ray-dome got bounced and got straight into the starboard (right) engine cause it to fail and also cause some damages to the wing as well. The pilot manages to keep the plane airborne for about 30 minutes before performing good emergency landing at the nearest airfield.

According to this site, http://kensingtonvictoria.com/blog/2008/04/20/australian-f-111-vs-pelican-at-550kph-pics/ the pelican did a 2 hit combo by ripping the plane's tip and choked the engine with its body.

Actually we know that already, now the question goes to what the hell did they make that plane out of? lol

good stuff though, damn, now we can just create the untimate anti-air defense. Release tons of birds at high altitudes and enemy planes will just crash into them and go down. cheap and simple, the perfect solution to out high defense budget.

how come the inside of the nose of the plane looks like that? Seems like the plane is held together by straw.

RAF is the only remaining operator of the General Dynamic F-111. But yeah, at Mach 2.5, theoretical max speed, a lot of things can damage a plane.

The nose on most military aircraft is just a fiberglass shell covering the radar. If you were on the water with a cigarette (very fast) boat and hit a pelican the damage would be just as bad.
Of course with the aircraft not having any control structures damaged and only one engine shut down it was still flyable. The boat would probably tear itself apart and would definitely end up on the bottom.
Neither is good.

try pelican swarm counter-measure for air-to-air combat O_o

pilot "radar detects large unidentified flying object at 12'o clock at large velocity"
"argh... can't shake it"
"impact in 3,2,1,..."

BOOM!

pelican - 0 and F111 - 1 LOL yes bird and insects/bugs can bring down planes. I was watching aircrash investigation and i think that a bee nest was in a plane somewhere that caused it to lose its engines and power, thus crashing.

Wow! Then again, its not so surprising if you take a look at Newton's 3rd law: F=MA. A jet going that fast and a pelican in the opposite direction-the kinetic force is multiplied manyfold. So yeah, "that bird ate it hardcore". XD

Impressive how the plane stayed together and was able to land safely, says allot for the manufacturer. Its interesting to see the way the nose cone was built in layers.
