One of the first calculators that came out in Japan by Sharp cost 84,800 yen! Interesting how they mixed the multiply/divide key together. And it was big enough to use as a weapon. Via Byonavi.
Wow, bulky one! Ugly like hell, but would have been cool to own one. Expensive too... T_T
In a mere 30-40 years the world changed forever (at least in terms of technologies)...
Like computer 10 years ago...from a speed of 200mhz cpu to 3000mhz quad cpu ...technology advance so fast!!! When is the limit to it?!
Tadaaaaa... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljbI-363A2Q Kinda perplexing video IMO. Forgot where i got this. :)
haha, I still remember that my first computer was 486 sx25!!! It's freaking 25mhz!!! I was like 17yrs ago. XD
Lol 25mhz...that is like gameboy advance...lol
I had a Commodore 64, at the full 1 MHz! ^^;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law#Ultimate_limits_of_the_law its called moore's law. eventually we will reach the point where transistors and processors will be at the atomic level.
well at least it has 2 uses and one of them is hard to find in normal calculators....which is "can be used as a weapon " 0.o
hmmm, my calculator is about that size. of course much more functions. About 90% functions that I still don't know yet ^^;
First time I've seen an alarm on a calculator. Wonder if it's there to wake you up after hours of mind numbing number crunching or as a distress signal for when calculations are too complicated. I cannot divide by zero!!!
Maybe I can fit blades to my abacus! Then I can use it as a weapon too and be an unstoppable calculating warrior~
Make that a skateboard too, it saves you traveling time.
actually there are ppl who prefer big calculators....there is one obaasan in my office that the calculator is 3 times that of that danny display above i guess its easier to press and look.
My mom can't use a normal calculator these days. It too hard for her to see what buttons are what and the screen. Kinda funny my parents have to keep their desktop resolution at 800 x 600.
Woah that's practically £424 pounds! I must say i could buy a decent spec laptop at that price.
Oh wow. That also reminds me of an old early 80's computer ad I found on the Internet. Back then, an 80MB HDD would cost one a paltry USD4999, or is it a reasonable USD8,500?
My school calculator is cheaper than this, but holds way more functions and can even be used to type out short simple sentences.
Remember it was not the same context back then. ^^
Lol~ Hey, wait. Is it just me or are the numbers on the calculator's screen look like they're drawn from a marker?
That looks so funky. Call me crazy but I like old-school fonts. ^^
crazy :P
Back then they thought to be the most advance technology....
Makes me wonder if future generations will see current calculators the same way we see this calculator..
Well, it's exactly the same as for retro videogames. The youngest ones probably would say stuff along the lines of "Wow, you had to deal with stuff THAT ancient? I pity you!" or "What was that from, the Antiquity or the Middle Ages?" and you to reply with a "Yeah, we were pretty constrained in terms of capabilities but we enjoyed it while it lasted and some still enjoy that because it represents their Golden Age". People nowadays do not understand the beauty of simple things... But again I'm just an oyaji~... ^^;
Unless the way we interact with calculators is changed (brain /teeth / skin implants), I dont think that will happen. Take a look at cellphones. It's possible to make it smaller but why isnt it happening? because it's as small as it can be before humans can't interact with it. I believe some westerners are already having trouble using asian model cellphones with small pads.
Yes indeed. The most amazing part of that is that scientists thought it was hard if not impossible to achieve what we got today and look what we got now. Even if cars do not float in the sky, it's not that bad in such a small span...
Thats a really weak looking calculator -_- along with that price ? Sorry DO NOT WANT
for all you know it might turn out to be an antique and collector item, and could fetch as much as $100,000 in an auction
Agreed. Fully agreed.
Reminds me of cell phones back then. Had to lug around the equivalent of a car battery. Phones cost more now though, I think.
I think this might bring some memories of the big mobile phones.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=21lOpV5c2OQ
Phones ringing, Dude. (Reference to something - try and find out what... not that difficult)
Yeah, got it, but never watched, sorry.
I like the font. You can see how the horizontal line in 4 and 8 can cover the diagonal 1 line. Also the font itself is quite cool. Anyone have the name?
They were made before the standard 7-segment LCD display was brought in. Before LEDs, even. It almost certainly uses Nixie tubes.
I be they used this calculators as weapons during war time... It's expensive coz' it can kill the enemy with just one strike!
a good way to smack people to death with that calculator!!!
800 dollar!!!... At lease the number on the screen looked kinda curvy than right now...
I was going to say exactly that. Those digits sure look good, if not beautiful, for that kind of device.
I was expecting to see valves and steam coming out when doing operation.
LOL and maybe see cogwheels spinning as well?
Reminds me of one of my old cellphones, which I could also use as a bludgeoning weapon because of its size. :p
times sure had change
Sharp made calculator? I never knew that ^^
my dad has a battery operated casio calculator that's almost 2 decades old now. it's still with us and in working condition. i remember playing with it when i was a kid. ('~')
Collector item!
BANNED!! (in england)
LOL!!
A while ago i remember watching a documentary on 70's tech. I pure piece of invation for the time
My parents still use that type of calculator, but twice the size ^^; Much2 cheaper though ^^;
I really like to have an early HP calculator Like the HP 35 or 67. This is about the size of my HP 50g. A portable calculator with Nixie tubes. Rare indeed.
thats convenient...it also comes with an alarm clock haha
This is a Sharp ELC-8 - these used a vacuum tube instead of LED display and date from about 1971. Read about it here; http://www.oldcalculatormuseum.com/sharpel-8.html
That's the size of my current TI-84 calculadora. xD No, it's probably even smaller than a TI-84. But then again, it's not a graphing calculator.. but still the size amazes me.
"World's smallest calculator" my ass. :D
A calculator that size huh? Why not complete the set with a 80's cell phone.
Here's a fun fact for the curious: The financial calculator HP-12C is one of the oldest pieces of technology still being produced with very few adjustments. It's been introduced in 1981. (GOD! almost as old as me!)
hmmmm.... almost everything back then was big huh? tv remote(size of a brick), calculator(weapon of choice), computers(damn)!!
Nah, everything is ridiculously small nowadays. XD
i forgot to add families ahahaha families were big back then huh?
That'll be more effective as a good projectile...
Looks like the kind of calculator some "senior" accountants might use =P Qn: Do u place your calculator on the table and poke it with an index finger or thumb it like a blackberry like i do? XD
I was wonder, how would an HTML coding portable machine would look like?
Macbook Air.
It was not very convenient if we had to use it with the arms reversed like in the ad... Thankfully, ergonomy came ^^
There will be no limit to human evolution until we reach the state of becoming a being of Anti-Spiral (Gurren Lagann).
bulky and ugly as it may seem but that was considered hi-tech back then and it paved way to much better calculators and then eventually computers
Nice, but Curta is still my favourite calculator. But I don't own it yet.
