Gaijin Meido

(Japan(68)
Sun 2008/04/06 09:43
I get many mails worrying about and asking me how should one get by in Japan for a trip without Japanese speaking skills. just like any other country, you don't have to learn the whole language before you go but picking up a few words is always nice like "oppai."

For those who are still worried need not worry any longer - that is if you plan to go to a maid cafe as the famous @home cafe in Akiba now has a gaijin maid.
Some of the @home maids in action below.

Very true, that.. I'm also learning Japanese and, yes, Kana is not so powerful a force as Kanji. >_<

Same for me as well. Kanji is difficult to master. You know it's tough when the Japanese tell you they have problem as well.

It's tough for them because they use retarded methods of learning them. They should just adopt the Heisig method and be done with it.

I have trouble as well. My parents used to make me memorize and write over and over again 10 kanji characters a week. They even sent me to Japanese school to improve my writing. D: Helped a little. So i guess i'm gaijin on the inside.

Well, I still prefer nihonjin wearing maid costumes. Maids aren't my favorite type but, if is a maid, must be a japanese!

Sure is good they have a gaijin in a thing like this, so Japan-style cafe, but the only thing is, well, they can choose a girl, you know, more, or least... Sure you know I mean...

I guess learning to speak will suffice when speaking with the medio at the cafes.

But its good to have a foreigner working at the maid cafe, so as to handle non-japanese speaking tourist.

I do wonder if she will speak in a moe voice to the customers in english???

I'm betting she's actually there to cater to gaijin adoring nihonjin otaku (as I don't think too many gaijin males would be all that interested in such a *ahem* futsu girl. like, seriously, she's the best one they could find? she better have an amazing personality)

You know, since many of us grew up around "gaijin" girls, we have different standards of beauty when looking at non-Japanese girls. To be perfectly honest, as someone who grew up around asians, there are less than a few maids in the vid I find attractive at all.

Hmmm. No thank you. I have way more than enough interaction with white people in my own country; even when looking in the mirror. One of the reasons I love Japan is having the opportunity to get away from them/us. I will just continue to increase my language skills. Nihongo ga benkyo o shimasu!

I find the gaijin's beauty not translating well into a maid outfit. It's not bad, but not preferable, either. Curious question, though. Doubt anyone knows. Would she be the first ever gaijin to be hired at a maid cafe?

Btw. seems like they order their maids in descending order depending on their beauty.

Does this mean that you get to pay more to get the companion of the maid on the top of the list..?

She's the cutest one too.. >_<

I first was worried how I could do in Japan without fully speaking Japanese, until I actually went to Japan to realize that I was worrying too much. I do not speak fluent Japanese, yet I do have decent Japanese accent and can speak basic Japanese such as asking direction and such.

If you take Japanese 1 course in college or something equivalent, I think you are pretty much set. If your main interest is Akihabara and sort, some stores there have English speaking workers or they will try to help you as much as they can. Grab an Tokyo metro train map in English from airport and you can pretty much travel much of famous spots in Tokyo such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara and more.

You won't get all these on first try but don't get scared even before you go to Japan.  Take heart and once you arrive in Japan, you will see that Japan is not as scary place as you would think once you get used to it ^^;
