"Don" [丼[どん]] is the word to describe a bowl of rice with some topping nested on the top. So the beef bowls are called "Gyu Don." This is Maguro Don - a bowl of rice topped with some slices of raw and minced tuna together with some egg. Do they serve Maguro Don in the sushi or sashimi joints in your region?
that looks goooood
ME WANT TO EAT ONE EVEN IF IT COSTS 10,000 YEN!!!!!!!
I'd guess this dish to cost about ~1,000 yen. >_<
That looks good. Sashime....mmmmmm.... Now I'm hungry...
Yum, me hungry now. We only got 3 asian resturants in the city, 1 of them is a sushi bar.
I'm a katsu don person, but that's looks nice. Will try them later :D
Here locally, they dont' (if people know a place lmk!) Quite good actually... this and sake(?) don - ate them frequently at a small Japanese sit-in restaurant in Sydney.
Hmmm interesting.... but I dunno. Is the rice hot? Hot rice with cold sashimi? I probably would like it anyways, but I always pictured something-don with the something being grilled meat of some kind. I love katsudon though.
Usually, it's cold sushi rice.
I'm not really a fan of raw fish. xD let me pass on this.
I'm not a raw fish person either, so I'll join you.
maguro is tuna fish... it tastes a whole lot better than shake*salmon *... maguro doesn't have that oily fishy smell that shake has, so its a lot better to have and its more pleasant and easy for 1st timers to sashimi...
And is it true that maguro is so much tastier when cut along the "line" on the meat, and not against the "line"? I watched Yakitate!! Japan! and there was that info given on one episode. ^^
Yeah, I've seen some around where I live. I soooo love sashimi!
i just have katsudon with some salmon on my birthday....in london...this is my favorite combination.
Japanese restaurants here have the Dons, quite various. They are not too expensive except the sashimi Dons. What bad is that sashimi is very thin. I've never seen a thick one like one in that picture here!
That looks really good! I'll have to try it if I can ever find it. Unfortunately the Japanese restaurants in the US seem to only serve katsudon, oyakodon, and tendon. Not that I'm complaining, since I love katsudon.
because of low supply of fresh tunas, usually they will slice them very thin. by the time you eat them, they will be already half cooked by the hot steaming rice.
Hmm, what does the minced tuna taste like, Sir Danny? Only got Chirashi (scattered?) Donburi around here. Had Uni don, and that was sinful (but not your thing, right?)
0_0 UNI DON??? my goodness i love that!!!! but it must cost a bomb right???
Lessee. Under $10 dollars I think.
But dude, since you're a chef, just buy some fresh uni and make the sushi rice. Cheaper that way.
needs more wasabe...
Never tried one before. Must remember to order one next time i step into a sushi bar...
What's that on the right of the bowl? (beneath the chives/onion things) Is that the minced Tuna? Anyhow, it certainly looks good. I wish I could have it for breakfast. Haha
Looks like it is a bit too raw (even if yummy-seeming) for my taste.
Don is very common in Japanese restaurants here. However, they don't usually like serving it with raw items with Don. In fact, I'll be heading for japanese tonight, so I'll see if they have anything exotic besides cooked eel.
What is that green coloured paste which is o the fish? Wasabi?
... Is it Play-Doh...? Umm no. Guacamole? Not either. ... ... ... Yeah, it must be wasabi after all.
you are correct sir... that is the famous or infamous wasabi...
Anything with raw fish I'll eat it!...
Hungry... Haven't check out too many of the local sushi places here. My experience tells me that most American get the wrong impression about such things.
I just controlled myself from having supper, and now you torture me by putting this up (or at least I'm reading it now). I love eating sashimi, and even though I used to not like tuna (maguro), I love it now. If only that Don used ootoro instead of the lower grade maguro, the taste will be beyond godlike.
yea beyond godlike... so will the price tag attached to it, that'll be WAY BEYOND GODLIKE...lol
This dish will make me say "okawari" I think..
No, they don't serve any...but I would LOOOOOOVEE to try that.
haha nice ID/pass thing next to the don, which looks amazing o_O! Too bad I can't have too much raw stuff ;_; but we do have some nice japanese foods in Vancouver tho! :3
and yes, Vancouver do have dons. We have this one called chirashi don with lots of sashimi on top.
They don't serve any around here well none that I'm aware of...Looks good.
I don't see maguro don around my area and that looks really good. Add to my eating list next time I visit Japan :P
I must not be accustomed enough to Japanese cuisine if I find myself expecting one of those Dons to give me an offer I can't refuse.
Man that looks delicious, arghs now im getting midnight cravings again lol
We do have that in Vancouver too! And it taste so good. But I like salmon more. =D
I shouldn't be looking at such dishes when I've just returned to the good ol' England... *sigh*
picture is so drool inducing. i had some last week. i try not to eat tuna more than once a month due to the high mecury levels. :(
that looks extremely delicious... However, the sad truth is, that certain species of Tuna might go extinct due to foreign competition...
Unagi don is also very good.
i'm getting hungry lolz
