I'm not gonna criticize since I don't know the criteria and can't tell much from a picture... and vid only. But I guess the golden age of Miss Universe contest is long gone. Not only from Japan, but the worldwide Miss Universe too. Lost much of it's prestige. Anyways, I'm not much into Miss Universe women type... so I can't really judge that. It's like, girls don't have to be really tall, and thin, and all "princess like" to please me... my beauty standards are kinda different I guess. Not that they are any easier to reach... but different nonetheless.

Why you ask? For no real purpose besides trying to look cool... aka "I got pecs and 6-pack, isn't that awesome?" but always also because (always a negative trade-off!) I have read more on Japansugoi and I seriously feel she isn't (that) great. I never was interested in those "beauty pageants" or top models, actresses, singers or people like that... I always was into the average 3D girl... But now in 2D girl mode only. ^^

dannychoo readers-- does she look Japanese to you?? To me, she looks like she must be, at least PART, gaijin. Personally, I have seen women who are WAAYYY more beautiful just sitting on the Yamanote Line or walking around Shibuya.
Contestants don't have to fulfill certain ethnicity or racial conditions to be eligible (otherwise that would be quite a xenophobic contest); since she is a Japan resident and citizen, she was eligible at the very start. And about your average 3D girl, I agree but also will say that beauty contests are all about samples of the population, not a true representation of "the most beautiful, intelligent, cultivated, etc." BS that they claim to hold. If you consider biases like participation (or not) in the local, regional and national selections and the various juries' choice, you can see my point already. I may be wrong on that though.
That is one bad photo... But even after watching the video, I'd say she's pretty low down on the list. But maybe she excels in other parts being tested.

As the 2nd ad mentioned: What is Miss Universe Japan? It's not only about outward appearance but also intelligence, sensitivity, humanity all combined together. Having true beauty. A Japanese female that passes as a female of the world. In other words someone who might be ugly but has other redeeming qualities. (Height for example)

From the ones in that clip, I'd shoot for the snowboarder girl. Overall? From what I have seen, either Rie Komiya or Maho Tanaka. (I have probably butchered those spellings, I know.) Both are athletic and pleasing to the eye.
I have to agree with most of you. She is not really beautiful. I did read some where that the Japanese judges are taking in to consideration the qualities that being sought in the miss universe competition. Even here in the US, I don't find most contestants beautiful. So...she doesn't get my vote, for this competition.

I agree. She really doesn't look like the epitome of the Japanese person. But oh well. It's common sense that Japan's not gonna win Miss Universe this year since they won last year, so they probably hired crappy judges or didn't try as hard this year. Maybe she's super smart.
