When theres not enough time to eat out for lunch its time to grab a bento. A bento is a lunch box that houses a variety of foodstuffs where the bulk of the meal is rice. Do they serve bento boxes in your region too?
they do sell bentos here in some of the japanese convenient shops (fujiya, konbinya etc) but don't think they're as pretty? I pack lunch for hubby ^^ I need to work on presentation tho ^^;;;;
I wish they served bento in the UK!!! But it will probably never happen or if it did it would be expensive. They sell medium sized sushi boxes in shops like M&S but they're expensive for what you get. Would be a great change from the old dominant sandwich culture. The great thing about bentos are that you can customise however you want or buy totally different pre-made bentos and they fill you up for the rest of the day. Would make one myself but I won't have the commitment to do all the necessary stuff to make one in the morning after a few weeks.
Do some stores accidentally sell expired bento's? Or does it only happen in anime O_O;;
bento is my file while i was in Taiwan. Though not as good looking as Jap bento, however it is very delicious and a big proportion serving for very cheap price! NT50(about one pound) with rice, one main dish ,3 side dish and one drink. Taiwan's culture has some influence from Japan's so I grow up with some bento childhood!

The closest thing to a bento in Sweden is a " färdig rätt ", which taste like a can of garbage most of the time. Some of the bentos looks good though, def gonna try it when I arrive.

Surströming! Hahaha! No, In sweden workers eat more like frozen lasagne and stuff. ^__^ "Färdig mat att värma", "Food ready to heat" Ah, but in norway I know they only eat sandwiches. I think it´s called "Smörskive". But those boxes look nice however.
Uhm, that would be "Smørbrød". I see lots of them sold in Narvesen kiosks, 7-eleven shops, hell i see a lot of'em in canteens.
We have Bento here in Philly. This city is well known in the U.S. for its variety and quality of food. There are many fine Japanese restaurants here.

That book looks a lot better than the one I have. It professes to be an "otaku cooking" bento book on the front (I bought it online btw), and then has maybe 5-6 pages of actual bento designs related to anime. A few Geass ones, though. It was kinda disappointing, even though it was only like $12us.
Well, the only place I know that sell products that is almost like a Bento is 7-Eleven.. However, they sell foods like Nasi Lemak, Fried Rice and Fried Noodles.. I hope they would sell sushis in those bentos.. :)
Only time I ate one was when I went t Hong Kong to visit some relatives. I just love local fare in Singapore too much to bother looking for bento; that's not to say I don't like them though.
There's a small Japanese food store here called *sic* Tokyo, which for its generic namesake is actually run by Osakans. They make bento daily, which I've never tried. Actually, I've always had quite an aversion to fish, and even when I went to Japan I didn't have sushi *ducks*. I'm really sensitive taste-wise and texture is also important to me, I really want to try sushi now, as I love everything else about Japan. I guess I'm just apprehensive that I won't like it.

I don't see what the big deal is. A bento is an arranged lunch. Those look like an arranged box of food to me (albeit a cheap take-out version) but it's still a bento box. Hey, not all bento are home-made.

Nope there are no bento boxes here. If you want to eat somewhere while your at work or in school go to a restaurant or the cantina or a bar ^^. Normally I go to my university students bar where they serve huge plates with lots of food that makes you full for the rest of the day XD
I wish they would sell bentos here, maybe in Düsseldorf but i didn't search for it there... so it won't help me anyways as i am not there daily. :(

Well I'm korean and I sometimes bring a "bento" to school. The word is different in korean but oh well they all mean the same thing you know?
Bento are definitely not a commons sight around these parts despite our "multiculturalism." However they are available if you know where to look. The Japanese fast-food places make a surprisingly good (and filling) and affordable bento. For only a few dollars you can get a "set" with pickled veggies on rice, a few pieces of sushi, meats and other goodies in tempura, and even a small cup of miso.

Well, since it is something to take out, most probably... Unless you have a conveniently placed microwave oven in the surroundings. ^^

Friends of mine who've been exchange students last year have different views of bento. some say that tbento tastes like their mama's cooking (more likely their host mothers cooking) while others say it tastes like either cardboard or a half-day old, cold dish, sold on the cheap. Since bento-prices vary at places, the higher the price for bento, the more tasty it is, at least thats what i think. Bento is commonly sold at supermarkets & train stations, aint it so ? I may be generalizing here... have no idea how bento is... it all depends on the quality & the ingridients, i suppose.
forgot to mention those friends of mine were Japanese language enchange students. My campus, Oslo University, has studen exhange programs with Kansai Gaidai, Tokai Shonan & Keio University (yes, THAT prestigious Keio university. You can only get there if one is a Linguistics or Cultural Studies Major, & passed a tough-as-titanium paper exam which one needs a grade of B or higher to go back for 1 full year exchange. roughly 15+ students manage to achieve that). Studied Japanese before, but put it on hold coz i had ot focus on more demanding issues.
Japanese market in my area sells them and an hour before the store closes, remaining bentos gets discounted price so they don't get deadstock bentos. I like my Japanese food hot so I seldom buy bentons though.
Mostly Koreans sell them aswell with abit of different things (like Kimchi lol) but theres bentos around Sydney

Bentos are everywhere in Hawaii! There are a few really good ones, like Imari. There used to be many okazu places where you can basically create your own ala carte style. Bentos range in all manner of quality, from elaborate shokado bentos, all the way to the cheapest tonkatsu and rice sets from 711 that you have ever seen.

In California they seem to have Japanese bentos in most supermarkets I've been in, but they're quite overpriced for what they serve compared to alternatives like Chinese, Korean, or Vietnamese boxed lunches. The quality of the rice is crap too, which leads me to believe they're not made by actual Japanese. Come to think of it, even in areas with some Japanese population the majority of Japanese restaurants I've been to have been owned by Koreans and Chinese...
I want a Mirai and Haruhi bento. That would be yummy, scoop up a little of each of them and eat them together. It'll be a taste explosion.
i get my bento only from Isetan outlets. i can get it more cheaper at other stalls, but get ready to receive unnecessary items in your bento. the worst part that is your bento is not fresh, most probably they've been keeping it in the refrigerator for a few days already. it is rude to open a bento or packed food to check it out, so it depends on your luck

Downtown Chicago has a restaurant called Bento that sells them. I haven't had a chance to go in and get anything yet. However, it is definitely on my to do list. Otherwise, most of the sushi restaurants have them for lunch.

To grab bentos, I have have to travel about 30 minutes from my house to the local Mitsuwa. There are other places that sell bentos, but they are a few hours away. Not sure if they can survive the trip home.
There's a small Japanese food store near my house that sells them, although you're not allowed to take the box with you. (Which doesn't make any sense.)
I haven't had bento in a while. But I used to get the one with saba fish and rice. Karaage bento is also good.
