Otaku

Otaku
Me in the video below on Blog TV a while ago.
The guy with the hat asks me what sort of image does "otaku" have outside of Japan and goes on to say that the word "otaku" usually conjures up images of what you see in the image above.

What sort of image goes through your head when you hear the work "otaku"?

I know term otaku is an insult in Japan but I think in USA, it's more of a general term to describe people that watch anime, play videogames, read manga and what not. That's what comes to my mind when I hear the word otaku or use it.

The ONLY word to describe the people in the picture would be the word "hardcore". The word otaku, when used in another country, covers almost all the anime-lovers in it. Nothing like those in the image.

The term 'otaku' here (in my country) is used to describe normal anime/manga/etc. lovers.

so basically, if you love anime, you can be considered as otaku.

well, eventhough the otaku here isn't as worrying as in Japan, we're also considered as nerd and childish (anime here is viewed as child shows).

Well, I didn't look at the picture, knowing that something was wrong...
Guys, the day Danny wears a sake maker underwear outfit (?), poses in front of a multitude of weird guys and has a photo of it but also shows it to everyone to see, it definitely will be the end of the world...
Otaku... A term that will never describe me, as I feel it is reserved to anime fans that make it their central interest, to the point they beat anyone else at specialized trivia, have seen hundreds and thousands of series (and remember everything about them) and bought a mountain of trinkets and figurines/games to a critical point... The downpoint to that would be that they would have sacrificed a lot of opportunities in life.
I am not saying they are secluded beings or obsessed/addicted souls (among others), but the feelings can be close.

This was the negative definition of an otaku... The one I feel closer to (and would say is more real) is that it is about people that show passion for their hobby, with the latter still being misunderstood by societies.
Yes, people, I kinda lied above. The ones that are described there (and they do exist) are the extreme cases that generally have reached the non-return point (just like if they were addicts).

Hmm, I find that in Canada there's at least as many female 'otaku' as males (judging by the people going to anime conventions, also by the fact that at my high school, the girls in the anime club outnumbered the guys about 5:1) so I don't really think of that when I think of otaku. But that's all asuming the North American definition of the word, which is basically 'anime/manga/etc fan'

I generally see the word "Otaku" as what it was created for, something negative to call someone who's into anime and whatnot. But after I fell for Shokotan (The Otaku queen) did I start to see it in a slightly different light.

But what do I see when I hear the word Otaku? Generally either the guy form Densha Otoko (movie), or an unintelligent American Narutard. The latter I'm not quite fond of as I have to deal with them on a daily basis.

As much as I'd like to not that is what general otakus looks like, its a sad fact that a lot actually do.
Watching the densha otoko series, I kinda figured that that was overexageration, but it is seriously like that in japan.
Go to akiba, and youll see lots of people wearing plaid, tucked in, etc etc.
Though there are a lot of "normal" people there, there are a lot of people who fit the "stereotype" very well, because thats the way they look/dress/act.
Although I know in north america, the term otaku is either
    A) not known by most people
    B) something that some people are proud to be.
So there are obvious differences, and I dont think that it is as easy to pick out otakus in north america as it is in Japan.
And yea, there are different types of otaku as someone posted above, basically any hobby has them (trains, cars, airsoft, gundams, figures, anime etc, etc)

When i think of otaku in America, i tend to think of weeaboos who are a bit crazier than normal.. and usually 1 or 2 years behind on anime, which really bugs me for some reason.

When i think of anime otaku in Japan, i think of .. well the picture above but a lot milder.

nothing bad and nothing good in it, just a term to "quickly" identify a person.
