A young man of 18 killed a man of 38 by pushing him into the train tracks recently. The police have been at the young mans house to gather manga such as Death Note and Higurashi to determine the motives for the killing. I hope this does not lead to restrictions being made on manga publishing. Via Yahoo News.
Haven't heard of Higurashi. Is it a good read?
Nevermind. I remember it now. I think it takes a lot more than manga and anime to drive someone to murder. I guess it depends on how INTO it you get, and why. I enjoyed some of DeathNote because it was a clever manga series. I'm sure someone out there loves it because they get off on the thought of killing people. *shrug*
ya..higurashi is some seriously twisted stuff..and guess what, More seasons of it too!!! I cant say I hate that series but i cant say I like it either. More to the liking side though, just because the story is so raw and convoluted.
I've yet to watch past season 1, though I've been meaning to. I have to say this, I thought it was good to begin with, and the more convoluted it got, the more interested I was. Kinda like the X-Files, only ya know, entertaining. *ducks the flames* ^^;
There's been so many cases like these no a days if you go to alafista's site you'll see even more of these cases
Higurashi scared me seriously... green haired loli characters going crazy....
Same here. Unless they found evidence that specifically linked the crime to manga/anime(i.e diary entry) they can't blame it. It's idiotic. For all they know he could have been influenced by a movie or tv.
You should watch the anime if you havent...I find ths twisted mind of the cute little innocent looking girl that wanted to kill seem to be very amusing.... Lol at the Quote...*Stranger should never trust cute girls* The manga...is alright...
I don't remember anyone in Death Note/Higurashi pushing someone else onto a train track... But really, this whole "anime provokes violence" thingy is just plain stupid. There must be normal books with stuff like this too. I mean, what will they do, just put a big "NO" on every book that says something about a murder that just took place? If they do that, NOTHING that is readable/watchable will be allowed in japan.
I haven't heard of a Death Note "death" of someone pushing someone into train tracks, but this is just terrible. I'd rather hear of a killing of gunshot instead of this s** I'm starting to wonder if I want to go to Japan anymore.
this is why i always stand against the wall at train or subway stations, you never know what some psychotic individual will do to you
I believe they banned Death Note in China for similar reasons...
I thought that was cuz some kids brought a notebook that looked like the Death Note & said "Death Note" right on it...
Two violent deaths caused by two people who truly lost it... Two dramatic news back to back... I'm having difficult time getting those clearly. My mother always told me to stay away from the edge, as a madman could push me into the train tracks... Well, it does happen in this world after all... It's not only the ones that want to end their lives that end on the rails, some are forced to land on them and meet a horrible end. *Shivers*
Hmmmm, two death related posts in a row does seem a tad ott. Not horrendously so. But us Otaku lot are an upbeat bunch. A happy lot as a general thing lol. But this post does have more in relation to us. Than the bus one anyways. Silly people, trying to find something to blame again..... violence is as violence does.
I'd like it if you didnt make news posts about people getting killed/pushed etc, spoils the mood.
Same here.
Agreed but there are time that we haave to face the reality even though I don't like it...Should as the harpoon whaling post....drives me to a point of insanity
great another... one of these excuses cops will use for killings... why blame movies and manga... shoot blame the idiot that was dumb enough to kill another person for a dumb reason.
if japan is really adherent to do such a thing like banning certain manga/anime production, why dont they look at america with the influence of rap music and war movies. Its a perfect example, and I'm sure, including me, have little to some influence from the media that is shown to us. All in all I don't think banning manga and anime for causes of deaths and murders will solve anything, better yet, anything else that degrades humanity.
Then let's ban all toy guns and those plasticky little green men (among others) in the process, as well.
Banning toy guns? Something like this actually happened over here. Though, this wasn't intended by the lawmaker. It's just that the text of an legislation amendment wasn't very carefully worded. So in theory you could be sentenced for illicit possession of firearms just by owning certain types of toy guns that were sold in pretty much every toy store until a few years ago. ^^ Even the police complained about the wording of the law in question and declared that they won't go after people just because they own this type of toy. Though, this doesn't change the law itself. A judge could still sentence someone for this very reason. Shit happens I guess... (if the lawmaker is on crack. ^^)
So Mad Justice exists after all, and is closer to us than I expected... I see.
typo* All in all i think banning manga and anime will solve NOTHING*
Sounds like the media bashing that happens over here every time a youngster does something horrible. TV stations and gutter papers just love blaming things like killing sprees on violent video games. The reason someone does something like this can't be their broken surroundings and access to a gun. This would be too simple! The reason has to be that playing Counterstrike and Doom turned the culprit into a bloodthirsty freak.
If anything, I'd say that those games would probably save more lives, as they probably placate a lot of the aggression in people that play them. And if it doesn't, well chances are the person was a psycho in the first place. And as far as the "real" reasons you said, it pisses me off that no one EVER uses those reasons for a violent crime. Where I live, we actually had, very recently, a senator's son and his friend fooling around with the senator's gun in the woods behind his house. The gun discharged while in the son's hands and killed the friend, supposedly. Every defense possible was used to avoid implicating the son because he had access to the senator's gun and it would reflect poorly on him if he just left it out. It went from "the boy was suicidal" to "he stole the gun from the den" throughout the trial. Ultimately I think he was found not guilty, so who knows what actually happened, but with a senator, I'm sure there was something being covered up or obscured there. Makes me sick.
Restrictions are probably be the first thing our politicians would come up with, that's the way how they to solve problems here... They always blame computer games if a student runs amok, it's ridiculous.
Your comment suddenly reminds me of the Mass Effect 'full frontal nudity' moral panic that happened a while back.
Theres full frontal nudity in Mass Effect?? Eh???
Actually, there's no 'full frontal nudity' which is what the comma's are for. You know how the game Mass Effect allows you to get involved in romantic situations with a short cut-scene that indicates sex between said characters. The story goes that some psychologist found out about it and somehow came to the conclusion that the game allows you to engage in full, graphic sex, which is an obvious lie. Of course, Fox News picked this up and ran a story on it with a panel of other so-called psychologists, (or writers, whatever) who have never even played the damn game, immediately described the game as "as teaching their active users, adolescent boys, to consider women as objects of desire valued solely for their sexuality." Of course, once they watched someone play, they retracted their comments. The whole story is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_Effect#Sex_Scene_Coverage_on_the_Internet (Whoa, my longest post ever.)
Ew, there's f"au"x news in the UK? I thought that garbage only infected the us.
Sex is evil! Pretty much every criminal and every terrorist were the result of at least two people having sex. So it just makes sense to ban it! ^^
Bwhahahaha! Yes. Sex is baaaaad. No more sex. I wonder what would happen if everyone just stopped having sex... everyone would get very stressed and then we'd die out from lack of new babies. Not untill the sperm banks were sucked dry though.
But deathnote doesnt have any deaths where someone was pushed onto a train track!! And I've only seen Higurashi, so I dont know if there are any deaths like that in the manga version. But there arn't any in the anime!! GAH!!! Next people are gonna be blaming sex on porn!! :gasp:
Well the ironic thing about "What if they blame it on Death Note," is that the whole world in the series, submits to Kira, inciting violence on his behalf, instead of people roundly condemning the violence and trying to scapegoat it onto other things. It's pretty much trying to show that you can't throttle society into control and there's always going to be violence. If anything was to get banned/destroyed/censored/whatever, it's usually the result of someone's personal agenda or platform to get where they want to go politically and appeal to potential constituents. The porn analogy was good, too. It actually highlights the absurdity of the violence thing. Obviously sex was around and "epidemic" before printed or televised sex, and I'm sure very little actual intercourse is inspired by it. (That's actual intercourse, not dolphin-waxing ^^;) Just as the fact that the world was far more violent (well openly violent anyway) a few centuries ago than it is now, and they didn't have movies and tv to help them out.
it's the breakdown of the family unit.
Well indeed.... thats how it looks in the UK anyways... parents get lax, children get rude, violent etc. Then when they have children it gets worse once again. I was brought up with family meals everyday. EVERYDAY. And I'm glad of it. Even now we're still having family meals. Never in front of the tv, unless theres something wonderful on, and we're late eating or something. Quality family time is important. Lots of people I know eat dinner/lunch in their room! I was quite shocked at first, I thought most people ate with their families...
We meals together ^^; Pretty much the same as you. haha. I know there are people who sound pretty strict when it comes to family meetings and meal times... very scarey!
I have learned from my uni courses that the most important moment for a family (especially one with children and adolescents) to reunite and share time together is during meals, so yes, it was truly beneficial for you not to skip them.
come to think of it. there was a incdent of a young girl in japan who mudered a police anime higurashi was cancled for a while
Yeah, that incident got the last episode of School Days delayed too. Some thing about a girl doing her father in with an axe?
just found this in wiki "As the result of a murder case in September 2007 in Japan involving the murder of a police chief by his sixteen-year-old daughter with a hatchet, as well as the Japanese media relating the case to anime such as Higurashi, the latest episode screenings of both Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai and another anime, School Days, had been canceled by a number of Japanese TV stations; however, AT-X, TV Saitama and Sun TV announced that they would be airing the episodes as planned. Later, TV Saitama announced that they had ceased broadcasting of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai from episode thirteen onwards.[
Similar thing happened here too. Some new (new, in my country's pont of view) animes are shown in my country, the most popular one here is Naruto. Then there's a kid's death.... it was said that he was dead because he was imitating the Ninja moves from Naruto~ (that's what I heard) so, the tv station which Naruto is shown got a protest from many sides for showing that anime~ For me, it's just our people that's stupid. Anime is clearly not for kids, yet they make anime as a kid's show~. It would be better if anime isn't shown here at all, or they have a clear explanation for the age rating.
Got to take into consideration if Naruto is censored or not. Also if the people in your area can handle it or not and if the kids in your area are actually mature enough to even watch it in the first place. Won't say it should or shouldn't but its more of how mature/intelligent/common sense level the audience has in the area around.
What in the world arn't there too many people being killed already!!! If that boy wanna kill then just kill your self... They better not ban Higurashi...
Again, it happens. *gazes out of window*
Sounds like Bowling for Columbine all over again...
This would be as stupid as blaming violent behavior on games. Police should be asking questions to parents and friends instead of looking for manga and other weak excuses. But of course, it's a lot easier to search for easy scapegoats who can't answer for themselves than make a real in depth reflection of our own culture and society. The american/european/eastern society's new trend is to blame everything they don't have an answer to video games. I shure hope the Japanese don't start with that crap too. Stuff like that not only is unfair to the ones accused, but also ends up hurting the process of finding the real reasons behind such atrocities.
no different from conservatives blaming violent video games for some crimes >.>
There was a guy street racing and got caught by cop in my region. And the cop found a PS2 game GT4 in his car. And they media started to blame on the video games. =/
Remember that Need For Speed game incident in Toronto? A group of friends went racing and the cops found Need for Speed in the car blaming it on that. I sure as hell would pull out the "People been speeding in cars ever since they were invented" card. Or the Romans and Greeks went crazy in Ancient times because of a game called Rome Total War.
danny please dont kill people because death note manga made you. ok with all joking aside i hate when people blame anime, manga, and the otaku lifestyle when something bad happens.
There are so few murders per capita in Japan, but the methods are always strange. I remember a few years back when I read about two older men being friends and the one always addressed the other without honorifics when they'd talk, so one day he just knocked him over and stabbed him in the head like 4 times with his umbrella. And then the next year some adolescent boy cut the head off of a girl and stuck it on the gate of their junior high school or something. Anyway, anyone who would try and scapegoat murders on games/anime/manga is stupid and/or crazy. I mean I'll grant you that there are definitely sociopaths out there that are going to be mentally ill and attempt to hurt people no matter what, but if someone actually paid attention to these kids, or even adults (like the family dinner thing), small things can be really positive in making someone better mentally and socially. Come to think of it, Japan has very unique social ills, isolation can do strange things to the mind (hikkikomorism) and ijime has always been a problem, I guess ultra-civility comes at a price, that when it bubbles over and someone lashes out it's a big burst and not just constant apathy and ignorance like other places in the world, lol.
Ah the wonders of the human mind. We may like to pretend we know all about it (as evident by replies here :)) But in reality we scarcely know anything about the way it works :) Both sides can only speculate
According to the World Health Organization there are about 1.2 million people killed in traffic accidents every year and 10 million are people injured. Doesn't this mean we should be banning automobiles? But in all seriousness...this story sounds like media bashing. There isn't enough evidence to conclude that such an incident was induced from his selection of manga (one possible factor). If anything, they should be more focused on establishing the connection between the 18 and 38 year old.
That almost sounds like prejudice, you know. The dude killed someone, so obviously he was inspired by evil manga @.@
If you wanna push somebody on the train tracks, you push yourself... What does the innocent guy got anything to do with you? He died without any reason...
I blame CSI for encouraging people to murder others and gain kickass publicity out of it via really coolsome investigation methods involving the use of science. I believe banning CSI will encourage a global drop in murder rates. Am I a responsible citizen of teh society nao?
#!@#!@#$!@#$ Another Nice Boat. Asshole. *refers to the boy*
This thing again? It's stupid. It's almost as stupid as Mass Effect Sex scene, were a store took it of the shelves and fox news also supported this. Leave the game, anime and manga and look more into the behavior and personality. Maybe do a few tests.
maybe he want to be a bad guy like this? http://www.onemanga.com/20th_Century_Boys/19/05/ http://www.onemanga.com/20th_Century_Boys/19/06/ urasawa naoki FTW!!!!!
my my,i think its going to be another bowling for columbine scenario danny if they decide that manga is what incited the man to kill. when will people ever learn? 'things dun kill people, retarded ideas that come out from the indiviual's heads do' apparently,a lot of people are just too numbskulled to take the responsibilties for their actions.materials are alway easy scapegoats for people to blame things. this is a mock senario btw: just because of 1 guy blow his own brains off and the anti-activists anyhow declare that the material is what incited that person to blow his brains and pester the goverment to ban everything on it without considering the fact is that it was his choice to blow his brains off not the books that influence him because it was his choice that he choose to blow his brains off. i mean consider the facts: 1)it was his choice that he choose to kill. 2)the main culprint is choice because he choose it and he must bear the resposiblity for it.he choose to commit the crime because he thinks he get away with it by killing someone and then then shift the blame to things. hope you get what i mean people.no offence btw.=)
you hear this kinda stuff everywhere now starting with columbine. not appropriate movies not appropriate video games not appropriate mangas tons of us watch, play, and read those, yet not everybody commit crime. its just excuse for those parents, teachers, and other authorities to shift responsibility.
thank you for simplyfying what i meant and i totally agree with you.=)
Shigofumi is another anime thats been tempered with where the episodes get changed. Anime has nothing to do with how people act its just entertainment material nothing more. If people get into a traffic accident and have had a game it was probably impatience not because they played the game through hype. Romans and Greeks couldn't of been violent because of Rome Total War. Seeing Japan do this also saddens me since I thought they would be far more intelligent then the North Americans in this area. Things like anime and always get under fire through people's stupidity for not admitting their own mistakes. Shigofumi, Death Note, Higurashi no Naku koro ni, Need for Speed: Underground 2, Grand Theft Auto Vice City/San Andreas, Gran Turismo 4, Mass Effect. Whats next? Jigoku Shoujo because it shows people's impatience, dark side and such? Has that been under flack yet?
If people get into a traffic accident and have had a game it was probably impatience not because they played the game through hype. let me change the word hype to, game probably getting delivered or waiting to get played. When you buy something or borrow something you want to see it right away in its full glory right?
Instead of blaming anime/manga or other media stuffs, what's more important is to teach/guide people about having proper principles/morality. But a person who commits crime after watching anime/manga/movie often already has some kind of "psychological problem".
Death Note has had many cases related to it and there hasn't been any effect on manga/anime publication. Therefore I'm not worried. ^^
Burned through the Death Note manga a week ago. I like it. It is sad that the cops will grab anything not mainstream and use it as the reason someone snaps and kills someone. Not, "His parent's beat and sodomized him with a baseball bat every night," or, "Her father sold her to all his friends to pay off his poker table losses." No, it's always the, "He reads this comic about killing people, that MUST BE IT!" response. I hate people....
This is what happens if someone gets into deep in manga.
