Australia Japan and Whales

Australia Japan and Whales
Japanese folk are arriving at an airport in Australia to be greeted by...
Local person: Are you Japanese?
Japanese person: Yes
Local person: Then I'm going to kill you for research *makes pistol shape with hand* BANG BANG

What is this all about? Its another anti whale awareness thing as reported on Moneyzine.
The below video was added to YouTube a while ago but its the first time I've seen it...

Seriously - not funny.
I don't support whaling but that there is going over board by FAR.
I didn't watch the complete clip but the laughing people in the back while that idiot is asking these questions... no way, had to stop it. :/
I can understand the feelings of the anti-whaling people but geting people involved just cause they are Japanese is plain stupid and drags the whoule thing on a damn low level.
They should keep in mind that there are enough Japanese people who don't like whaling either and protest by not buying the meat for example. (least thats what i did grasp from reading a ton of japanese news websites i browse daily - correct me if i am wrong but i don't think so ^^; )

I think all of your "targeting them just because they're Japanese is wrong!" comments are biased.
First off on the racism thing: Racism goes on everywhere, and i've witnessed it more in Japan than in many western countries. This Australian program wasn't even designed to offend the Japanese by being racist. It's just mocking something that's been going on in Japan and that guy "harpooning" people has a point and he got it across well, even with the comedy added in.

Whaling has been banned internationally and Japan has no right to continue whaling.

If there was any western country (such as America) that broke this law, i bet there would be a lot more complaints. And a lot fewer people would be offended by someone "harpooning" an American.

A lot of you are being biased and i hope you can see that. (And no, i'm not biased against the Japanese. I am Japanese myself but try my best to take an unbiased view of these issues and see where the Australians are coming from.)

Feel free to debate any of the points i made.

*poof* there goes the perfect Japan viewpoint :)

Nah but you are absolutely right and it’s something that becomes painfully obvious the longer you live in Japan.

They are insane... This world is simply insane. Many of the Japanese are not responsible for whaling...
In this example are there illustrations of:
Racism and discrimination: Yes;
Inappropriate, disproportionate and focused to wrong people-campaign: Yes;
Abusive stereotyping: Yes;
Susceptibility of activity to resemble bullying and flaming: Very high;
People behaving like that... worth a Sparta Kick: Definitely.

a very comprehensive analysis there D-blade. i find myself agreeing as well.

actions like this would not stop whaling but it will definitely earn you a place in a black notebook.

it is also stupid because insulting people will not get your message across. people will not only find you to be rude but they will shut you out completely. worst case scenario, they eat whale meat out of distaste of your campaigning methods.

that said. Sparta kick FTW.

There are people like this all over the globe, who are willing to resort to, uh, "unorthodox methods" to get people to change their views. In my personal opinion(braces self for possible flaming) they are only slightly better than terrorists. At least I don't run around in public forcing people to watch anime, fanatic I might be.

*fumbles with wire cutter* A group of comedians, eh? Well, then that's a different story altogether... Just watch out for those who might not be as forgiving as the average Japanese public. There IS still a limit on the jokes you can put in mainstream media, after all. Older citizens of my country can relate to that VERY well.

Racism: They aren't being intentionally racist in this video. Racism goes on pretty frequently in Japan, expecially towards gaijin, half-bloods, and even full Japanese people like me who grew up elsewhere. I believe it's wrong to get offended so easily at a video that was trying to show the flaws in Japanese modern-time whaling when racism goes on everywhere.

Focused on wrong people: No. Read my other posts.

Abusive stereotyping: I don't see why this is abusive. Could you explain?

Wrong activity: Uhm have you seen those Japanese comedy shows and pranks? Why not get offended at those too? Why are you laughing those off and not laughing at the Australian show?

People behaving like that: This goes on pretty frequently in different countries, whether targeted at the Japanese or not.

For some reason, when things are targeted at the Japanese, everyone gets heated up about it. When pranks are targeted elsewhere, there is less debate and discussion about the justification of those acts.

I apologize if i offended anyone. I don't mean to put anyone down personally with my words.

The guy in the show has a point. But asking your nationality then bringing up the topic because you fit the category is well, racist right?
But then again, the show might be satire so I guess that’s why it’s presented in a really blunt way. Still not good for young viewers though.

Even though I know that the Japanese said about the research is a lie and agree with too many killing of a whale...but that is what they eat.......but the Australian want to save the whale but doing that will not solve the problem. but only to show racism. To me masacre is like nazi, and voilence is terrolism.
Both country are equaly guily...too much fishing can cause harm to eco system...while the Autralian shows racialism...The Autralian's mind is being blind with anger and they are not thinking right...
Austalian hate Japanese for whaling and over fishing but uses Japanese technology...what a shame...no playstation for them then and see how they feel...Buwahahahaha

Rather a very popular comedy show in Australia that targets ANYTHING that is in the main news. It would not matter what the topic is - they just pull it apart.

In that case, bad jokes of that caliber are better kept for self... I personally feel that the true laugh value of that kind of humor is highly debatable and very susceptible to hatred and discrimination (as side effects on weak minds).
This is why I don't care about US comedy, too focused on stereotypes and faults of others (not to mention often targeting all types of minorities), instead of looking at their own flaws and ways to see things.

So basically like the Daily Show here in the US satirizes just about everything in the news with a smattering of sarcasm and cut with sardonic humor? Though, I still agree with previous posts to previous news items about this subject: It's just a race/country/political thing at the core, other countries engage in whale hunts and don't garner flack while Japan seems to be singled out for something that a few countries do.

I *think* (and i could be wrong) the issue with Australia and Japan over this is Japan has been supposivly caught whaling in Australian waters.
It's illegal but the previous government didnt really do anything so all those greenpeace freaks on boats took action into their own hands.

(Not to come in on either side, by the way, just clarifying). The water that the Japanese are whaling in are claimed by Australia (and Australia has said they are a whale sanctuary), but since they are Antarctic waters, and no country is internationally recognized to own Antarctic waters or land, they are not really their's. I do agree that whaling endangered species is a bad idea though.

Lol, no need to get angry at this. This is just for fun and they are depicting what some of the people who wants to save whales are like. The show is actually called Chasers: War On Everything. And I can tell you right now, from being a regular viewer of the show, the name of the show is true, they attack EVERYTHING. Don't make a hasty bad first impression and think that they're idiots and racists... In fact, it's quite the opposite. They approach everything from an unbiased view. And everything they do is very controversial. And if you guys are still wondering if I speak the truth, yes, they attack Australians as well. In fact the whole crew got arrested for a security breach at the APEC gathering last year. To illustrate the lengths that they went to... They disguised themselves as the representatives of Canada and then breached 3 security check points and came to the final check point where snipers were deployed on several rooftops on surrounding buildings. Anyways, download and watch a few of their episodes before you decide that they are 'racist' and are only targeting Japan. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/chaser/war/

Don't get me wrong, I love Japan just as much as the next person in here. To be honest, I don't really care about the slaughtering of whales for food or whatever. But the endangered whales that are being killed should be left alone to breed for a bit so that the numbers can increase. Wouldn't it be better to stop eating whales for a year or so to ensure that there are whale meat for the future? Isn't that the way to be thinking if whale is really apart of the Japanese culture's diet?

It's supposed to be a comedy show but the true feelings and intentions are still behind what they're doing.

As for me, I support whaling as long as it's not done on any endangered species. I bet most of the people that say it's wrong sit there and eat chicken and beef and forget that it's the same thing, taking life from a cow is the same as taking it from a whale. The thing is that taking lives from an endangered species is going to have adverse effects on the entire world. And since we can't exactly breed whales in large numbers, specially for their meat like we can cows, it poses a bit of a problem. I think the only thing that should be allow to be done to endangered species is VERY limited RESEARCH ONLY.

Kind of reminds me of Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere's comment "They were teddy bears in the water", on the killing of dolphins in Japan. It's all about mentality of individuals in the end, not everyone would agree with each other.

While I enjoy satire quite a bit...I find their presentation to be rather rude. Shooting a total stranger with a nerf harpoon while they're minding their own business...offensive. Asking someone whether you can kill them? ...is just wrong (if they don't get the reference be prepare to explain yourself). Another problem is that their implying that all Japaneses people are responsible.

Well when you think about it, the Japanese people ARE demanding AND supporting whaling. It's basic economics that without demand, a product will fail. In this case, whale meat. If the people stop purchasing whale meat for now, the suppliers of whale meat would surely respond. I'm not sure where I've read it but a poll showed that 60% of Japanese people (by memory, the majority of the 60% were older people) support whaling. I know that polls don't depict the real percentage of the supporters of whaling but don't you think that it's a bit concerning? The people always has the power to address the government about these issues. The funny thing I find is that Japan can come up with the Kyoto agreement to save the Earth from global warming or to slow it down but can't handle something like this.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. My comment was toward the presentation of show and not the issue at hand. I have no interest in debating the topic since I don't want to take either side (both have selfish motives behind their reasons...hey, that's politics for you). Best that I'll leave it at that.

I'm quite glad to see that the Japanese people in the video kept their legendary calmness and courteousness.
I guess I would have gone slightly haywire if I were in their stead, with an obligatory "Mind your own business, I am the one you should be targeting!"...

Don't take offence to this program! Its entertainment. They're a bunch of very funny comedians who poke fun of everything hence 'the war on everything'. They are always controversial.

Also this episode(120) was filmed in 2006!! I find it hard to believe that you of people Danny, would be sucked into shallow conclusions with this incorrect context.

Just because you find it amusing...doesn't mean the next person will. After all, we all have different taste and opinions.

I have to admit I am surprised at the time it’s taken for this clip to be noticed and surprised at the serious lack of investigating the source and production of the show - something that can be very damaging if it’s taken completely out of context.

as a german i know those kinds of prejudice. i traveled all around the world and i know 4 different languages, but the first thing people thing and say when you admit that your german is "oh a nazi" ... often i felt like punching those people. even if some people think its funny, there are borders you shouldnt cross.

To most people above, I agree the show can be viewed to promote racial discrimination but considering the context of the program I hardly see why we have so much *heat on this topic*.

This kind of humour is not new. Shows such as Simpsons and South Park from US make satires of religion, race, sexuality all the time. Even Japanese game shows that "entertain" by firing half naked people from toilets (you can find the video in YouTube) promote harrassment, shame and disrespect for personal privacy. Otaku's beloved eechi anime contain sexual discrimination because in most cases it objectfies women.

At the end of the day if you have a relatively uptight personality you can write and object and protest etc... but for rest of us who can laugh about it, we'll just continue to watch Simpsons, South Park, Ecchi Anime and Japanese Game Shows.

oh it's chasers...

This is how something can be blown out of context. Before i knew it was chasers I was agreeing with the comments that it is racist etc.

However these guys do not mean anything toward the Japanese. Instead they are parodying how silly it is to do something like what they are doing.
