Yaki Niku

Yaki Niku
Yaki Niku is where you cook your own meat on the hot plate in the table.
I remember the first time I tried cow tongue - I asked what it was and my cousin didn't tell me until after I ate it - he knew I wouldn't have tried if I knew what it was before hand. Ended up tasting quite good.
Do you have Yaki Niku in your region?

Done it before when I was in japan, but I think outside Japan, you're more likely to find this sort of thing in Korean restaurants.

It's billed as Korean BBQ and it's pretty cool, but rather pricey if you want a decent portion.

Unforetunately no. Which is sad, because I think it would be a great idea, to have your meal cooked the same way as at home, but ate in a diffrent place (probably with a view)

except when i see the saliva gland in the cross section of the cut, it's just that which freaks me out sometimes. only if they prepared it withouth the glands

No yaki niku here, but lots of cow tongue if you go to the right Mexican restaurants. Delicious on a corn tortilla with lime juice.

The restaurant on top of Yodabashi in Akiba that specialises in yaki niku was one of the best i've had while I was in Japan at the start of the year. Spent over 12000 yen there! And trust me... I WILL GO BACK THERE ONE DAY!!! Thanks for making my mouth water Danny... =(

Hey Danny, if your out and about in LA there are alot of Good Korean BBQ places for cheap prices. One of them is called Manna and I think its like $16.00 for all you can eat, and they do have Cow Tongue as well.

The closest thing I can come to is the Chinese hotpot. Prepare some decent soup stock, then get your hands on as many meats and raw veggies as possible and then you can choose to dump them in or cook bits and pieces at your own leisure. I'm pretty lucky; gets to eat it a few times a year, counting festivals and the cooking whims of my mum.

Something for people to muse upon: news reports state that heating the soup of a hotpot for more than 90 minutes(assuming a fairly size-able portion is left, and if no one does refills), somehow the soup turns poisonous. Don't ask me why, I have no idea myself.

ahh...
yaki niku...
good stuff but a lot of those places are located in the town areas in singapore and malaysia and they can be quite pricey...
the food quality though is well worth the price you pay...
as for me i don't mind burning a big crater in wallet when it comes to great food...
but only once a month or longer...
i do prefer the cheaper alternatives that are located on the outskirts of town areas...
its those 2 in 1 *chinese hotpot cum hotplate* kinda places where can boil or bbq your food...
most of the time these placees are a all you can eat place... but so far have never seen cow tongue in the menu...
would luv to give it a try sometime...

Didn't do it at Japan style but sometimes do it at Portuguese (it's done in some other countries as well) style, which is a large stake comes raw with some sauces on the sides with a very very hot personal volcanic stone for you to grill it, normally its cow meat but there are dishes where you use pork, really delicious ^^

I have hot-pot at home once in a while, it's pretty nice. just buy the ingredients and sit around the stove, cook what you want to eat. it's awsome.

I could eat tongue, becuase don't have any problem eating something like that, but the reason I don't eat tongue is, that it tastes somehow not too good and feels strange in your mouth. Not my favourite.

Closest thing to yakiniku we have here in Brazil is... world famous barbecue.

Danny, a word of advice: If you ever make some brazilian friends in Japan, ask them to invite you and your family to a brazilian barbecue.

Well, they probably won't be able to do a brazilian barbecue in Japan... it would be too expensive... but most brazilians can't spend much time without making a barbecue...

Basically, it's lots of bovine meat roasted and cut in generous pieces.
I just went a couple of days ago on a restaurant that serves several types of meat (called "churrascaria").

Oh, while we were in Japan, we went to this restaurant in... I think it was Roppongi... called Babacoa.
Some waiters and kitchen staff were brazilians. It was almost like a "churrascaria".

Highly recommend it, though it's not cheap, and not for weak stomachs... XD

Yaki Niku!? Hell yeahhh!!! Awesome meal! I have it home sometimes and there are also lots of Korean restaurants in Chicago that serve the "Korean BBQ" version.

Ox Tongue is WONDERFUL!! The BEST is Sendai Gyutan. Sendai (in case ya don't know) is northeast of Tokyo in Miyagi Prefecture. From Tokyo it's about 5 hrs by car or 2 hrs on the Shinkansen. Awesome city! Beautiful Matsushima is very nearby.

Chinese hotpot...? Yeah... it's OK I guess. I prefer Japanese hotpot or Shabu Shabu. For hotpot you cook in water or broth. Yaki Niku is grilled.

Yaki Niku!? So DAMN GOOD!

Would Korean BBQ considered as yakiniku?  If so, yes, we have those in our region ^^;

We also have Gyukaku chain in our region as well so that can count as well. But Gyukaku here is really expensive, not that Japanese counterpart is cheap anyway.
