Currently migrating the current articles over to the new Mirai Gaia platform.
"screenshot9" is the new template with the article in the middle column.
"screenshot10" is the article in the left column.
The reason why I am experimenting with the article column being on the left hand side is because if it was in the middle, the user has to move their sight over to the left to continue to read the threaded comments as you can see in "screenshot11".
If the articles were on the left however, the user reads from top to bottom and continues to read the comments without breaking the path of their sight.
What do you think/prefer?

I prefer having the article on the left side of the page. It will help readers to focus on the newest article without diverting their gaze too much.

Middle is best, since most of us are probably used to the original layout of having news items on the left and the article in the middle. Breaking our line of reading or not is hardly the point I guess, more towards what is the "main" point of the site layout.

I too prefer layout 9, due to the fact that I am just used to the layout. Though any layout changes you make, we won't have any problems adapting.
People are reluctant to change. I remember reading that somewhere... probrably in class, maybe I should have payed more attention :)

I choose 9 as well. ^^ I think the articles are the most important part of your website. so it would make sense to keep it in the middle. ^^

i prefer the screenshot11,it looks neat, because there aren't any comments on the latest news, therefore it looks more neater than before.^^

Having the content in the middle is far more common thus is more comfortable for the reader, especially a new reader from Google (while researching dolphin waxing technology).

i prefer the screenshot 9 layout. it doesnt take that much energy or effort to rotate one's eyeballs a few degrees, really, so i dont think that having the main article in the middle is a problem at all
Student (for-ev-er)
Registered on 2008/02/21 08:25
Having the main articles on the left is kinda nice since their pics usually take up so much room on the screen. However, the news stories change more often so it is nice to have them on the left as well.
I'd leave the column layout the way it is.

I think that it being in the middle is a lot better. Being off to the left just seems weird to me, and the middle just seems to work better.
Though an option to change between the too could be good.

..Yeah, I prefer 9 as well. I was always glance at the articles first, so it's..."heavy" in terms of weight? Putting it off to the left really bugs me 'cause it looks unbalanced.

As graphic design prespective it would better to keep the article in the middle because the eye tends to follow patterns. Therefore if you move it to the left the ave world move from right to left or vis versa. However if you keep it in the middle the eye is automatic direct in the middle and have either a way of moving left or right.
Basically is is great as it is and you know how the puchi burbs redirect you to another page, i think it should be reverted back to the old way where you post it and it reapper on the side of you and does not redirect you

I actually prefer Screenshot10 over Screenshot9. It allows me to see the main article being presented, then news snippets, then user information, moving from greatest content importance to least. But this follows the design ideology that I've been brought up on from ixd.
In the Western world, the eye moves from left to right, so the left-handed layout works best for this. In the Eastern world, the eye typically moves from right-to-left, so this layout would defeat that concept unless your Japanese readers would be accustomed to the Western-styled designs (and in most cases, would be, as they have generally adapted to other things, such as computer software, which is inherently Western designed).
Danny, you also make a great comment about the column length - if the column is not forced into a static width, then having the reader's sight line change from centered to left would be problematic. What would that look like (aside from a large amount of white-space on the sides) from a design standpoint?
As for all of you saying that you like the centered layout more because you're already used to it: Does you being used to it make it better? People hate change and cite that as a reason to not change, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the other choice is not the better choice. You never know until you try.
*PS- Sorry for the "book". This is what happens at 0140.
