Slow Down Time

Slow Down Time
Can time slow down?
This BBC documentary sets out to find out.
Time seems to be flying by so quickly that its scary at times...

Japanese lesson time. To say "time flies" you say "jikan ga tatsu no ga hayai" [時間が経つのが早い].
jikan [時間] = time
ga [が] = particle meaning "is" or "does"
tatsu [経つ] = to pass as in a period of time
noga [のが] = If I was a teacher then I could explain why this goes here but I cant ^^;
hayai [早い] = fast

For noga, can we say that the 'no' makes the sentence before a 'noun' and ga is just a regular 'ga'?

well, it's true that somehow that time slows down on stressful times while it somehow speeds up during happy/safe times...

Time is passing by to fast, it feels like christmas was 1 month ago, and we are soon in april. Insane.

Slowing down time would be cool, if it wouldn't make an slowmotion effect.

Well it has been mathematically proven for a long time now that time is a subjective experience on the relative part of each person. We only have a standard of time just so we can all use a method everyone agrees on to measure time.

Time also slows down with larger gravitational effects, though of course, to get anything of the sort you really need to get rather close to a mass large enough in space to experience the effect of time passing by slower relative to someone outside of such a gravity well.

Slowing down time is possible, but you wouldn't notice it really. Everyone does it in their life, except it's so minor that it really doesn't matter (usually you're life is extended by a second or so, hence the "slowing" of time). It concerns relativistic velocity, a concept by Einstein, that says a person traveling at the speed of light will be able to "slow" down time, but really, if you were that person traveling at the speed of light, it would seem as if time was passing by normally. I don't know if anyone's heard the example before, but if two twin brothers were on earth, and one was sent into space orbiting the earth at the speed of light for a couple dozen years (don't remember). On his return, the brother in space may only be a couple years older whereas the one on earth will be much older then the other twin.

Anyways, what I don't like about BBC is that they seem to have a lot of hoax or dumb articles. One time I recall their being an article on BBC's site for a story about how one of the Harry Potter characters could have been possibly gay... yes, what a waste of an article. Anyways, its possible, but you can't really demonstrate it.

That's a thought experiment by Einstein. It's to explain the concept of Time Dilation, which I won't define because it's already been said above.

There's an equation for calculating Time Dilation, but I don't feel like whipping out my physics notes right now :p

Yes that is relativity as explained by Einstein (by the both of you), which was what I tried to put in layman's terms just as food for thought. Though the part about minuscule time dilation was interesting, I am generally talking about the ones that are pretty much relative for both the observer undergoing the normal time continuum and the one outside that seems to see the first one slow down relative to himself. Sorry just finished a book on black holes, but I never did find myself mathematically inclined enough to go into astrophysics.

It's funny how people automatically go into light and time theory when you talk about this kind of stuff. The first part is just a simple trick of the brain, not light or time. The human brain see things at about 30 frames per second, hence the reason some video games have frame limiters set at 30fps and why most tv shows and movies are set at 29.9fps. Anything below that seems jumpy, anything above that seems smooth. When given a life/death situation, the brain speeds up it's processing to higher than 30fps, thus enabling a person to see the numbers the use to be a blur.

so slowing down time is a state of mind and not some kind of physical device...

Well, time isn't physical to begin with; it's a measurement.

Think of it this way: a 200x200km area of land would be gigantic if you stand in the middle, but if you look at it from orbit the size will be tiny. There's no "physical device" changing the size of the 200x200km square, you're just changing your position. (Of course, I'm assuming this works for time, since I haven't really gotten into the subject)

My life, I wouldn't mind if there was a slow, pause or fast forward button, as I have yet to find a true meaning for it (my life project/career is going underway though). A rewind button would have been nice though.

Interesting idea...
Part of the concept that everything is relative, because in the end, we all perceive things as our brain "translates" them.

Best thing to see this for yourself is skydiving. Seems like it takes a long time, but when you ask people who where watching, they'll say it took only few seconds.

Time is a relative thing, you'd almost have to find a way to slow the whole world down or whatnot. Time is infinitely flowing and governs everything in the universe, you'd have to find a way to halt the flow of physics itself, localization of the phenomenon in a vacuum or something might be possible, but universally like The Matrix or something.... hmm.... I think it'd be better to try and speed yourself up or something ^^;

のが in that sentence seems to indicate "the way" of something, almost like an adverb. The way that らしい is a suffix that makes a word adjectival, (or てく) that'd be my guess. I have my Intermediate Japanese Grammar dictionary around here somewhere, I'm just far too lazy to look for it....

Time...that's something I think man could never really get a hold of for hundreds of years to come. Maybe unless we get to use the full capacity of our brains to understand as complex as time then I think that would be a possibility. :D

a) the human mind can be pressure and forces it to push to the real human potential when its cornered
b) time distorts as another force distrupts it

Can time slow down?
The short answer is no because time is constant. While it's possible to experience same event at a different speed. It does not mean time has slowed down or sped up. Take a drag race for example; the start to finish of the race. The drivers and spectators experience those fews seconds differently. Although, you could alter the rules to time but doing so would push the conversation into time traveling.

even if you CAN change time, what's the point? it probably better to keep the past as it is. If someone invents a time machine, it's obvious some people might use it for evil. If THAT happens, Sadam Hussain might be having World war 3 by now.

Hmmm, just finished watching the video and I got really mixed feelings about this.
Two consecutive free falls? When I thought bungee jumping was scary enough, LOL!! The guy must have been paid well, truly needed adrenaline or fame or made a silly bet.
Well, for the rats, being drugged is not really funny, as it is not only time, but the overall perceptions that are distorted.
Anyway, they try to be cool in the video, but they are stating the obvious: Since we are trapped in our bodies (I have no wish for an ethereal existence though), there are perceptions that remains highly personal/subjective (and cannot be accurately between people) such as pain, pleasure, love and hatred, but also the sense of time.
