Melonpan

Melonpan
Whenever I eat Melonpan I think of Shana and member Melonpan ^^;

Its basically Melon flavored bread where the top is slightly crunchy.

Have you tried Melonpan and do they sell it in your region?

Ah yes! Same for me, and that's because Yakitate Japan perfected Melon-pan! ^^

And Rie Kugimiya plays a role in the anime, too. ^^ Love her smexy voice...

Don't know about the manga, but the anime was so-so.
The first half of the anime was excellent, but then it just started rolling downhill.

Yeah, but that first half alone is what I consider as Yakitate Japan.

I don't consider the other half at all. ^^

If you are in Long Beach, see if you can go to the Mitsuwa Marketplace in Costa Mesa. Take a right off the 405 south onto Bristol. Make a left at the second light (Paularino) and it is on your right hand side. Melon Pan is on the opposite end of the entrance, near the Daichiki Sushi and Bentos. It is on the 2nd to top shelf across from the sushi.

good melonpan is made with freshly squeezed melon juice, but most of the ones you'd find at bakeries are just made from canned melon juice.

forgot to add that the crunchiness is due to cookie dough, but because the time it takes to bake bread and cookies are different, the cookies usually come out half baked.

oh! the bo lor bow (bao) is probably the right way to call the hong kong style of the melon bun, I think the japanese have perfected the melon bun tho teehee which is what you see in danny's picture above. I have at least had one before which has custard in it (melon bun, supposedly japanese style) and I have also tried Hong kong style, both without filling or with red bean paste ^^ I want to try to make it some day but it's probably gonna take hours of work LOL

I've only ever had the Hong Kong style "pineapple bun" and like Chun said, it's to die for if you have the plain version when freshly baked with a slice of real butter melting in between! It's a long time Hong Kong tradition (at least long enough that my grandparents used to have it when they were young).

Nowadays, especially at yum cha/dim sum, they have smaller versions with custard and/or red bean paste inside.

Will have to try the Japanese melopan soon and compare!! ^___^

Ah, I see. Thanks chun. I like just freshly baked plain bo lor bao. Never had custard (that sounds good tho), but I know they stuff them with all sorts of weird things nowadays: red bean paste, lotus root paste, pork jerky string, minced meat. I have unsuspectedly bitten into one sayin "WTF!". Someday it'll be halibut with parasites. I just know it.

the remind me of 'mexican' buns, and all the ones i've tasted never had any hint of melon flavor to me. i would think it's one of those flavors that would mostly dissapate with baking, like watermelon or cucumber.

In Mexico we have something similar. It looks exactly the same but it's not melon flavor, just bread with some sugar. We call them "conchas" (it's pronounced "kon-shas" if you were to write it in romanji) and it means "shells" (like the ones you'll find in the beach).

Its called melon pan only because it looks like half a melon.

In Singapore, we can actually find the Hong Kong pineapple bun (菠蘿包) in quite a number of confectionery shops. It is actually the equivalent of the Japanese melonpan. The only difference is probably the size. Japanese like them BIIIIG.

Despite the names of these buns, you won't necessary taste any fruit flavors in them. XD
