Member Dragun alerts us to the development of a Satellite by the Japanese which will bring homes a 1.2Gbps internet connection. Most cities in Japan get a decent speeds with optic fiber anyway so not really news over here but the satellite will also be providing this speed for neighboring countries too. I hear from member comments that the internet speed in Malaysia and Indonesia is pretty bad - how bad? Image from Gizmodo.
i wish i live in japan. the internet connection in indonesia is really bad, and pricey. there are still a large number of people who use dial-up. now there's a cable connection only RP.100.000(about 1000 yen) for up to 384 kbps (modem not included and you have to check is your area covered or not)
Danny, what speeds are advertised in Japan? And what kind of provider do you use? I'm on 8Mbit (12Mbit burstable they tell us) through my cable company, but the only time I ever see a sustained rate of 8Mbit is when I'm downloading from usenet servers. Web traffic is very perky, though--no complaints. Just curious.
All questions answered here ^^ http://www.dannychoo.com/blog_entry/eng/1339/Broadband+in+Japan/
http://www.speedtest.net/result/238854253.png Here are the results for my (announced) 8Mb, DSL connection service... Yeah... Right... At least I have no time or traffic limits, but yet, you gotta feel like they just screwing with you... I pay over 25€/month for the service and get like HALF the speed. Plus, the test was done at midnight, so a lot of people were probably sleeping and the network wasn't as crowded... Ah, go figure... Blood-sucking Bastards
here are my speedtest results, pretty accurate, 6mb download 10 upload http://www.speedtest.net/result/238940642.png
I don't know about Malaysia or Indonesia but what I know and everybody who understands a little of internet here is that we are paying for a speed that we don't even get, like I'm paying for 8 Mb speed but I don't even get 4 or 5 and that came on the news today.
In Malaysia, you've to pay RM 88 (around 3,000 yen) per month for a 1 Mbit/s ADSL connection.
basically in malaysia, Internet is monopolize by TMNet. I have a 1036kbps/512kbps for RM 99 (approx 3300 en) Connectivity quality is really dependant on the area you are in. For example, now in Penang my connection is stable and good, but when i was in KL, Setapak the connection mood is like that of a girl having period. However, I think EVERY SINGLE malaysian would agree on the fact that TMNET customer service is just mottomo hidoi. in my case, the wrongly charge me higher rates - called up to complain - but for 2 yrs i pay more and issue never fixed
correction my connection is 1536/512
ya, the speed depend on area and alway not stable.
Well, the only reason TMnet still has customers is probably because they didn't block the usage of P2P programs like Maxis did(IIRC TM only used the speedcap method). They knew their own customers well enough to milk them off their cash, since you all know if TM really blocks P2P we'd all went over to other companies already :p
yeah, they don't block, they just throttle p2p. And they're the monopolizing ISP here so we have not much of a choice. I'm getting 1Mbit speeds at RM88 per month. That's around... 3000 yen or USD28.
Not to mention that always have frequent disconnection during raining days... I have been experienccing frequent disconnection between Feb to May and they still charge me until i get to Supervisor level 2... RM88 with a free crappy modem? I'm still waiting if is any other company going to provide better...
Capped, throttled, and monopolized by the TMnet. The fastest home connection you can get is only 4mb, provided with your rusting telephone cables. 10mb connections and above is probably light years away from us.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/238974091.png Look at my wonderful speeds. orz TMnet truly holds a monopoly here.. True that their service is "saiyaku" and the speed is unstable. Depending on where you are, your speed can be incredible (not) or it can be extremely slow. Like Youtube videos- I can't watch them instantly, as I have to wait for the whole video to finish streaming before I can watch without interruption.
I found this Izzi iBurst internet - I'm very likely to subscribe to this service,as it's my only choice. . I've called their customer service unit, and they told me that they don't block or throttle P2P.. Any opinion on this? http://www.izzi.com.my
I've been using the iBurst technology for over a year now. Overall the technology is rather good and has a lot in common with cellphone technology. You get peak 2Mbps but you usually get about 1Mbps due to contention ratios. Unfortunately the service provider over here doesn't care too much about it's customers.
i've heard about this and i can't wait for us in SEA gets a freaking fast internet but the question is that how much will local ISP charge for such a service XDDD
I just did a current event on this for school. Seems pretty nice.
Indonesia really bad and not widespread The connection reggie mentioned only available in Jakarta and even then not covered throughly, I live in the 2nd biggest city; Surabaya and both mine and my parents house are NOT covered. My only option is to subscribe to a unlimited 384kbps for about 7000yen a month and even that keeps disconnecting frequently and I tirelessly complaining to them. Imagine how many coolsome figures with eyes I would have by now :( Malaysia.. I don't think it's that bad, but maybe the problem is the same in Indonesia. Not widespread enough. But the speed they have? 100x better even than Jakarta
Yea, and to top it off, the connection is oftenly unstable -_- I don't know the average speed which my provider supplied, but as far as I remember, when the speed at its best, you can get 40MB / hour. Nowadays, there are many promotions of cheap and fast Internet services here, but almost all of them are just the same -_-'
CatZ, I lived in Surabaya, too, for a few years, I had my high school there actually. ^^ I hate the flood. ^^ There is one thing I need to notice here, stability of internet connection is not equal all over Indonesia, for instance, in Bojonegoro (small village), my Speedy was fairly rock-solid (I rarely got disconnection, and I often got full-speed in torrent and http downloads, but I got low speed in IRC downloads, wonder why..?), while in Surabaya, yes, Speedy there sucks as hell.. disconnections happened so frequently, it was just headaches...
actually there are already a FTTH connection in Jakarta. it's very pricey and only covered a little area. i saw the ad that it costs about 5000 yen for 3GBpS. the quota is about 2,5 if i'm not mistaken
the quota is 2,5 Gb. sorry, i forgot...
the speed is 3 Mbps, sorry again. i'm now in class and my i'm kinda sleepy
I paid about Rp.350.000,- for this result http://www.speedtest.net/result/238986931.png not sure it's fast or not but I'm sure it sucks compared to Japan.
@epu708, well, it's about four times my speed.. if it's stable then your internet is better than mine. orz
really? then lucky me LOL My friend in KL said he paid about Rp.150.000,- (~from RM) for a very fast internet connection compared to mine.
My net is a broadband but is o.k for me to increase the net speed but the problem is how much can i add the monthly net paying???
that satellite looks like its been designed by disney. lol anyway with regards to the internet connection speeds here, I have a 1mb connection at home, but the one at the office runs up to 3mbps. quite miniscule compared to the speed you get there though. ^^;
My connection is rather decent at 10mbps. But compared to Japan, its still too SLOW.
TMnet is blood sucking money ! I hope there will be any internet service provider company give a good speed and more cheaper cost. Even thought we already have 4Gbytes connectivity but the cost [ 210 Malaysian Ringgit(s) = 7075.28 Japanese Yen(s)] you able to bought 2 MG with that
opss! sorry not 4gBYTE BUT 4mBYTE cost about 210.00 MYR =7,042.57 JPY =65.2597 USD it freaking expensive
Indonesia connection? dont ask, even opening hotmail inbox takes forever or maybe simple site like google.com can takes half minutes or more -.-
From singapore and satified with my 10mbps connection. =)
If Malaysia thinks their connections are bad... from what I just read they are awesome compared to South Africa's... I have a 256/128 connection, and I pay (an approximate equivalent of) 14000 yen per month. *sigh* Can't wait to leave for Japan this year ;_;.
I', paying USD80 for 4mb broadband, most of the time can only reach 2.8mb top speed.
Currently in Melb, adsl2+ 24mbps dl speed, quota p/m for peak time is (6 am - 1 am) 30GB and off-peak is 20GB, paying AUS$60 per month.
I lived in Australia for my pre-university so I have done my share of research on internet there, but I've never come across a plan with 30 GB peak and 20 GB off peak - usually it's the other way around ^^ I was with TPG ADSL2+ (24 mbps, 30 GB, 128 kbps shape afterwards - darn, the 150 GB plan came out after I moved from Australia >_
It's very unlikely that the 1.2Gbps will be available to single users, it will probably be be shared like a cable connection. ...providing neighboring countries... this thing seems to be geostationary, so if it's a two way connection it'll have a ping of at least 450ms. (light speed to orbit and back 2 times) It'll work great for video on demand, but it's pretty much unusable for anything else. I once had a unidirectional satellite connection ISND + satellite, didn't make much sense back then cause there was no real content to download. Connecting to a website took longer than loading it with 6,4kbps ISDN only, and that's with only half the distance for the signal to travel.
There used to be plans for LEO (low earth orbit, ~10ms ping bidirectional) systems that would have provided high speed access worldwide, but it never look off due to the risk associated with the cost of bringing about 60 satellites into orbit.. Satellite telephones use these kind of constellations but haven't got the bandwidth.
.. ISDN was 64kbps. ^^;
While Malaysia's speeds are crappy, at least it's better than other places like Africa and Indonesia (I think). Have to at least be grateful for that.. BTW- though my max download speed is about 200kbp/s, the most I normally reach is 50kbp/s. Occasionally, two torrents would run at a total of 90kbp/s, but that's only for anime on demand.
Yay, now you dudes will be able to download eroge and stuff quicker!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I swear i will learn Japanese and live there ! I swear it!
http://www.speedtest.net/result/239160750.png well this is mine...
Indonesia's connection: I paid around Rp 700,000 (around 8000yen) for 384/64Kbps ADSL. Cable connection has this one ISP that provide speed up to 1.5Mbps (highest for residental) but Cable coverage is very limited, and it does not reach my home area btw ADSL 512Kbps unlimited costs around Rp 1,700,000. price comparison: a 20k yen perfect grade is usually priced Rp 1,800,000 over here o yea Indonesian connection sux
Don't know about the speed in Asia, but here in Kansas, rural Kansas, the best connection only gets, let's see...wow a whole .5MB/s download. Terrible. I've heard about new long range wireless internet on the horrizon called WiMax. Here's a couple links. http://www.wimaxforum.org/home/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX
yeah was on dsl.. gar around 2-3MB.. now on cable and get aorund 8mb most of the time.. so not to bad.. price aobut the same i guess.. theres smoe areas of the us that are starting a limt on how much you can download.. i think its 5 GB per month.. that might sound like a lot but a few albums, or movies and tahts spent fast.. and then they charge some asinine price for overages.. expensive... asses..
Disconnection in my place is really serious yo. Sometimes, I could spend a whole day without any goddamn Internet! I shed much manly tears seeing many of my porn Torrents barely making any progress. Is the RM88 (USD27.44) a month I paid for a 1024/512 connection justified, when I'm still forced to fork out a little bit of cash to surf the Internet in the nearest cybercafe?
i just read the article about it in yesterday's newspaper. it was launched at Saturday (i didn't know that). you need a 5 meters diameter of satellite to receive the maximum speed. you can also use 45 centimeters satellite and u can get about 100++Mbps (i forgot the detail). hoping can get it in indonesia with a low price
This is my result: http://www.speedtest.net/result/239944466.png Unfortunately, here in Indonesia, the Internet connection is not balanced, some area are fast, some other area are downright slow just like molasses in the winter. BTW, I'm using Fastnet (http://www.firstmedia.com) 768kbps package which cost me Rp 325,000 or about 39 US$ per month, it's quite good. And about the broadband via satellite, one thing for sure, the connection WILL still affected by the weather and also don't forget the solar flare event which happen several times each year, not to mention the transmission delay. So even though it's good for browsing, chatting and downloading, don't use it for online gaming, the latency is still to much for it.
I haven't read the description from what I see from the pic, all that it's missing is a mikuru beam.
