Member Ninja Mari talks about the proposed new bicycle laws in Japan which will ban listening to music, holding an umbrella, riding on the sidewalk/pavement, sticking kids on the front and back of the bicycle and ringing the bell repeatedly. Most Japanese folk don't like ringing the bell anyway and ride silently behind you slowly while wobbling left to right or screech their brakes at you causing you to loose 50,000 brain cells. That reminds me, still haven't seen Nasuko...
Are you allowed to ride wearing stormtrooper armor blaring the imperial march thru your rolly? That better than a bell.
Was thinking of shooting a vid with armor on the bike actually ^^;
LOL, that would be a sight to see... Quick Danny, shoot a vid of you riding on a bike before those dudes make some rule about banning storm troopers from riding bikes...
Huh? Riding your your bike on the sidewalk is actually ALREADY illegal in Japan - its just EVERYBODY does it! Holding an umbrella IS ALSO illegal while riding a bike, and you can get fined Y100,000 for that. Of course, the only person I know to get busted for that was a gai-jin. Welcome to Japan.
danny get together with a friend. you in stormtrooper, your friend in vader. light saber fight on bicycle
Modern-day semi sci-fic calvary battle?
^@Danny If you want to ride your bike you'd have to get one of the tie-figher pilot cosumes. lol
Sean, so Japanese people have to invest in those "umbrellas on circlets" or be soaked to death in the worst cases?
I was expecting this as the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsMHPsyfPoE Also I'm not so sire about the use of bicycle bells being ineffective in Japan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnL4fjMzsSU
Some people ride on old bicycle that makes screech noise on their brakes and that always freaks me out >_< But new law with no listening music seems little weird to me. Is that because people can't hear car horn or something?
Well if they do listen to music via headphones, it would be understandable.
Never seen so many laws to ride a bicycle. I think it's almost 8 years since I ride for the last time, kind of sad since is pretty cool to ride one.
The bridge in the picture looks a bit like the bridge where Aya fell in 1 Litre of Tears, especially with those bikes parking ^^
It was taken in Kyoto. I forget the name of the bridge but according to the guide, it's pretty well known...
Ban listening to music? Uh... that's a little harsh and seems unneccesary.
MACdaddy i agree i think that rule should be scrapped otherwise itts a dark day for the Ipod generation in japan
This is bad news for me! I always listen to my music when cycling, and when I move to Japan I intend to make cycling one of my main transportation. What's wrong with listening to music? I still could listen to the horning of cars and am still alert to the surrounding.
Thanks for the feature, Danny!
Deng. I can't even RIDE a bicycle D: Didn't have/haven't had one since I was a kid. Only ever rode tricycles ^^; (Unless scooters and in-line skates count for something)
Singapore has almost the same situation, but because of a few people, the government made a grace period for the bikers to see if they could be more considerate. Thanks to a few idiots who would rather ring the damned bell furiously than cut even a tiny bit of their speed, that period was thrown out of the window.
remember folks, no sleeping on the bicycle wile riding as well. ('~')
I love this new law: no more riding on the pavement/sidewalk! Finally I can walk on the sidewalk in Japan while not having to constantly look behind me when I go left or right, just to avoid these silent devils riding your heels off. I get chills when I remember the screeching brakes...
I heard and saw some pretty interesting sights in japan regarding bycicles. Huge parkng lots filled with tons of bikes... wonder how people find their bikes inside that mess. :P Also, I heard from some people living there, that it's kinda common for people to abandon bikes. Specially if they get a ticket or something for parking them on places they shouldn't. True Danny?
Ha, it's really rare to see somebody riding a bicycle while holding an umbrella here. I've done that, because don't like getting wet, but I'm quite sure that people think it as somehow weird. There are no special bicycle laws here, but you shouldn't ride drunken or among walking people on the sidewalk. Luckily in many places one half on the sidewalk is for walking people and other side for those riding a bicycle.
Lol, the music part reminds me of a guy that used to drive his bike around my neighborhood and he had a radio blaring in the front basket all the time.
That si dumb. It si just like the Helmet law in Michigan.
