Tonkatsu

Tonkatsu
The folks at Kotobukiya certainly treat their guests well - took me for some Tonkatsu the other day.
Tonkatsu is pork deep friend in batter and is usually served with rice and plum sauce.
See some Tonkatsu in action below.

I know about Sashimi. But have never heard of tonkatsu before. I want to try it already~ (especially since I haven't had my dinner yet) Will definitely look for it the next time I go to a Japanese restaurant

Danny little typo there: "Tonkatsu is pork deep FRIEND in batter.."

Well, Tonkatsu Is a deep friend to me! Absolutely love it. In Germany there is an almost identical dish - Pork Wiener schnitzel - which is a traditional Austrian dish and popular part of Viennese and Austrian cuisine, consisting of a thin slice of (usually) veal coated in breadcrumbs and fried.

Many Japanese tourists to Austria or Germany wonder why so many restaurants in remote villages serve "Japanese" food!!

@ Sean:

Little correction:
The original "Wiener Schnitzel" is made out of veal, not pork.
There is "Schnitzel Wiener Art" (Art=style) which is made out of pork and is more known/popular because pork is much cheaper than veal.

@Sinless, I am well aware, that's why I wrote "- Pork Wiener schnitzel " in the post. I lived in Germany for 7 years, and most everytime I had it, it was Pork-based (your'e right - cause it's cheaper).

Sorry Sean, my fault ^^.

I just wanted to say that the original is made out of veal, but I think only 25% of the German`s do know this fact xD

Siew Yok is chinese roasted pork, if I didn't read that incorrectly. I like both, but whenever I eat Japanese here I always end up with Tonkatsu on whatever I get.

Good stuff.

Atleast the place I went to have a choice of either the normal ones or the curry ones.

Seconded. Tonkatsu ramen is amazing. As for the soggy thing, at some places I've been to they've served the tonkatsu separately from the ramen, which is nice. Although I do like a bit of soup on the meat too, just for that added moistness!

And now I'm hungry...

Tonkatsu is a pretty standard food in Japan... I ate it A LOT when I was in japan.

They also serve it with Kare Rice... and with rice with egg topping.

Though I'm not much of a fan of pork meat, cow meat is expensive in Japan... so Tonkatsu was essencial to satisfy my needs on meat. :P
