Kojima Addicted to L4D, considers giving up Japanese status

The man behind Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima, has got Left 4 Dead fever, a first-person shooter addiction rare in the typical Japanese video game fan. "Maybe I should quit being Japanese," Kojima joked. In a newly published Famitsu interview, by way of 1UP, the Kojima Productions head worries further about the disparity between Japanese and Western tastes, of which he's starting to fall more into the latter. "The US and European marketplace are far better balanced," Kojima said in a one-on-one with Sega producer Toshihiro Nagoshi. "There are games everyone can play — maybe calling 'kids' games' would be inappropriate — but there's also a deep base of core titles made with movie-industry people that explore the depths of hi-def. I'm addicted to Left 4 Dead right now, but people say to me that that game would never work in Japan. Kojima lamented that there "were hardly any Japanese games nominated in Spike TV's Video Game Awards this year." "It's sad to see that Japan's games failed to even register in America last year," he said. There's much more to the one-on-one than just Kojima's gaming tastes, including both his and Nagoshi's current slate of projects. They go unnamed, of course, but Kojima reveals that he has "started work on one" with three others "in progress."

Say WHAAAAT ?

I've rumours about him touring around US, visiting various Game dev studios like Infinity War (Call of Duty series) and others, probably trying to learn about the FPS genre and its popularity in the US.

If he makes an FPS version of Metal Gear Solid (with solid multiplay), then i'll be sure to check him out...

I haven't had a chance to play MG4 yet, but I thought I saw a gameplay trailer had Kojima saying it's possible to play the game as a FPS...think this was it.

You know, I do believe I read something in an EGM or 2 a short while back about Kojima and some fps rumors. I could totally be mistaken though, as I often am. I might be going senile in my "old" age.

Wow... To think that he's kind of envious of the kind of titles that are popular in the US really speaks to the creativeness of some game studios here in NA.

Wow! I would love to join into a campaign or versus match in L4D and discover that Kojima-sensei was one of my partners. A MGS FPS would be awesome, although I wouldn't mind a new IP from Kojima. ZOE and Boktai were both amazing.

L4D... it's not a surprise he's addicted... but giving up japanese status? that's a first.

Kojima shouldn't give up his Japanese status. I am not sure why people are behave the way they do, Americans loving FPS and Japanese loving J-RPGs, sims, and anime based games. I am also disappointed that there were few games nominated on Spike TV's VGAs (which made me skip out on it, and because I didn't really care). As a matter of fact, I am more envious of Japanese gamers; they play games like The Idolm@ster (which I so want to play, but not on a Xbox 360) and Mobile Suit Gundam games (which shaped me to the gamer that I am) and J-RPGs that you just cannot get in the US. While I am stuck playing shooters that are practically one of the most played genres in my Playstation 3 library (9 of my 21 PS3 games are FPS games).

While I don't know, you have to take into account how the games are nominated and who votes for them. I'm sure there is a certain American or western bias, not to say the games that we're nominated aren't incredible games. But there is a cultural divide even in games. I grew up playing Japanese games so I never really got into FPS or MMORPG which are the more popular genres in the states. Maybe Kojima is thinking about the road ahead and considering games with more mass-appeal. I just hope that he doesn't abandoned what makes Japanese games Japanese.

Erm, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series has some minor MGS influence, particularly the stealth/infiltration aspect...

But all in all, the MG series is still the one that set the standard.

Games from Japan set the standard, The west learned and expanded (sometimes copied, but NOT ripping off) the concept. People have different preferences, so we are more likely to play the games we prefer, irrespective of who's behind the design.
