Wow. Apple has done it again with the announcement of the MacBook Wheel - the first laptop to get rid of the keyboard. Check out the high res news flash or low res below. No price has been announced yet. Thanks to Mac user Gen for the news. Just noticed many new visitors coming through a search for "MacBook Wheel" ! All the mac stuff is in the Mac category or register the RSS for more.Alternatively you may enjoy the Tokyo Dance Trooper shenanigans - or browse around for more from Japan.
thank god for the onion...
I got totally trolled by them, didn't realize the onion logo in the corner. -_-'
Haha I hope you know the Onion News is fake =P
Lol took me a while to figure it was fake...Heard her say di(king around and im like...you cant say that on TV!
It's fake but it's fun to watch. =D
So true!
I love the iPod and I wouldn't mind owning a iTouch or iPhone if they weren't so costly but I'll be damned if Apple products don't cost too much money. I can't see how a ****ing wheel helps you type stuff faster.
it won't. but it'll make office drones feel like they're a cool club DJ. ^^;
let's spin it~~~~
unfortunately, I don't think it'll ever work cause I can see journalists and those who write philosophical texts will ever want it done intuitively haha and besides, ever wondered why the same concept employed by nokia on one of their fashion phones never worked? cause it was way too cumbersome wheeling letters :P
Belive ME, in USA Apple stuff is cheap compared to the rest of the world....
Even so, I still wouldn't want an apple product.
All apple prices are worldwide the same unless you're lucky that the currency has dropped in your favor the difference will not be more than a 100 bucks or so
Belive me, they are NOT the same. Putting aside currency exchange rate, when MBA debuted in USA, it cost almost twice as much in Apple resellers than imported directly from USA (in Poland of course).
=.= uhh.. i don't really know what to say ^^"
That's interesting =o I can appreciate the innovation, but it's not for me xD; Wouldn't say no to trying it out though, may visit the Apple store in Sydney when it gets released over here :3
it's fake
I'll stick with using a keyboard, thank you. ^^
*Doesn't understand how this could work...* ('~')
in for the $10,000 40gb model. 19 minute runtime here I come!
LOL The illegitimate child of a MacBook and an iPod XD
Mmm I'm a HP person so this doesnt appeal to me much. =/ Plus having to scroll for each letter seems like a big hassle.
A full 19 minutes before being recharged! I didn't know it was April! ;)
In Mexico December the 28th is the equivalent... maybe they are one week late because they used that wheel to type the news? (DISCLAIMER: I know that The Onion is a satirical news site)
Might as well throw in an Easy Bake Oven. That guy said it " We'd like to give customers features, they don't even realize" And 45 minutes to type an e-mail? That sounds like no one should be wasteful with their money unless they are a mac fan-boy.
Or maybe Danny should have posted this on April 1st. Because "The Onion" is a satire. ^^;; Besides, I heard that Jobs wants to have Apple make the iBake. It would be a small oven that keeps your HD cool while you make brownies, cupcakes, and whatever else you would normally make with an Easy Bake Oven. X3
I'd buy it... probably.
They have something similar to this, it's an easy bake for your computer if you have an expansion bay open. You can find it at thinkgeek, but I'm too lazy to get you a link, it's early v.v
Sugoii!!!
I knew I wasn't the only one in the world starting to get too lazy to type things out.
But it just looks so difficult to type with >.>; I spent 10 years learning refining my typing skills and now people are no longer typing? Bahh! ;_;
wait a couple of years and the keyboard will be obsolete - mind typing will be all the rage
Then a couple years later, you won't even need to think what to type, because it will have already been done for you, from conversations to a thousand page original novel, without doing anything.
imagine blogging with a macbook wheel.. takes forever to blog one article.. even typing a comment in dc.com is hard..
Thats why I like mac there always finding ways to do things differently!!! Apple Always innovative!!!
Oh onion! you've done it again! lol.
Apple innovation at it's best. Tough 45 minutes to type an email? I'd hate to think how long it'd take me to do any coding on it, lol.
LOLWUT!? Intuitive my butt! It looks super complicated. I think it'll take too long to write anything with that.
HAHA!Oh the onion.
"Everything is just a FEW HUNDRED cicks away" hahaha... that made my day! Thanks to the Onion
Heh, that was great. "I'll bye almost anything from Apple as long as it's shiny" lol
Apple does it again! Wow! Who needs a keyboard when you can have the Wheel.
45 mins for an email... Looks innovative but man typing with that thing looks like a real pain =/ and how will I play online games with a wheel? lol
Agree and how in the hell that guy want to send an email if the battery life is just 19 minutes. The battery must like a UPS for the laptop. Just enough time to save important document. I guest that, one must have like 2~3 spare battery and that is not much mobility for a laptop. I will stick with the keyboard.
mmm why, isn't the keyboard enough?
Very nice marketing strategy they have. This is simply comedy at its best. "Nothings simpler than a single giant button." "Everything is just a few hundred clicks away." "To reduce energy use, screen goes black after 4 seconds." "People who use keyboards, standing in the way of human progress." "The MacBook is virtually unbreakable unless dropped or hit." XD
It will takes hours to type a text
LOL he spent 45 mins typing an email! - ILL BET YOU ARE JEALOUZ XDDDD The battery can power it for a whole 20 minutes without being charged!! and - its virtually unbreakable unless dropped or hit - just like anything else! This ad is a joke XD
Haaaa, go Onion news! :P
Wow. It would take quite sometime to write an essay or something in class or wherever. Can't see why someone would want that. Keyboards are awesome.
Once you try it you'll realize that wheels are MUCH better
Very underhanded to post this during Macworld and when it's not April 1st.
LOL!!!
i was gonna say something about this, until i realised it was the onion i was watching.... argh you had me excited for a while there!
if apple keeps coming out with new macbooks like this im now going to know which one to get.im still stuck betweent he old macbook pro and the new aluminum one
Now that i can view it again. I can post my opinion. It's a meh... I mean scrolling to type... Kinda hard to imagine since typing with your fingers seem to be much faster than scrolling then searching before you get to input the letter.
Can someone tell me why making it harder to write is better? I can't seem to grasp the use of having "One" button, only to make it slower to type. Why use this when there is the keyboard, with which you can spend some time training and will be able to type a lot faster than if you master this "wheel".
(it's a joke)
It takes me long enough to type a text message on my cell. Using a wheel like that sounds like hell! XD
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA~! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Best macworld lulz!
The Onion is awesome. Judging by the comments, I get the feeling that a few of us are really looking forward to spending 45 minutes typing an email and a whopping 19 minutes of battery life. <_< >_>
ROTFLMAO! that's when I hear this, I start to doubt did I heard it wrong?
Love the Onion. Good spoof. How about this for keyboardless...What about a touch-sensitive surface where the user starts typing while an adaptive algorithm analyzes the initial typing pattern and maps the rest of a virtual keyboard based on the analysis? Can you say simpler than the wheel, more forgiving of typos, and accessibility for the blind? Any idea if anyone is working on something like that? Well, not really keyboardless. Maybe a brain-implant would be nice...
The aardvark asked for an aardvark.
|: It seems lkike a real pain to type with that thing? I can see the use in multimedia, but it's definitely not a gaming thing XD
For $2600, it is certainly worth the investment--who wouldn't want a laptop that is virtually unbreakable unless dropped or hit, but did anybody catch any more about the Sudoku killer.
I actually play Sudoku on my Rockbox-hacked iPod using the scroll wheel. It's actually not that bad.
Hmmm. I don't think I'll be getting this. I doubt it's useful for anyone but 'fun' users. Touchtyping is like an artform now.
It's real though it's disappointing for me. Though I don't use Mac notebooks, the keyboard legacy is very disappointing. Now you pick the items and characters slowly than before. More time spending on finding the characters that we wanted to input. Keyboard FTW. :D
Please tell me you actually know it's a spoof.
XD
And I hate predictive text O.O
My jaw dropped when i saw that long list of predicted statements.
Fake eh? Okay, I was convinced... o.O;
ROFLMFAO!!! This is freakin' hilarious!!! I used to read the Onion very frequently. Once I was reading The Onion while riding on the subway here in Chicago. I was laughing so hard that I was turning red and had tears streaming down my face. "I probably look crazy," I thought-- then I noticed someone sitting in the same seat as me, but at the opposite end of the train car. He was also laughing uncontrollably but he wasn't reading anything-- it was just his dementia. Then I thought, "Uh oh...!" heh!!
Looks like they mocking it more than trying to sell it...
Apple does it again. Yeah, my productivity in Word and Excel is definitely going to be better with the Wheel instead of a keyboard /sarcasm off Before I watched the video I thought that they would go the voice recognition route with the wheel, but clicking one letter at a time? It is worst that texting on a mobile phone (without a qwerty kb) I just don't see normal people buying this except for the Apple fan boy/girl.
Oh crap, I now get it. *ashamed* :(
oh sweetness.....
Thought this was real until my friend told me it was fake. D: *Doesn't know anything about The Onion* I can really see Apple doing this, though. Hopefully not. Keyboard = NEED x_x
"the aardvark asked for a dagger." Nice. Just nice.
LOL, very suggestive word indeed........
Hahaha... that's a nightmare!
my first thought: They put an Ipod wheel on a laptop this time............. this make typing super slow.......... Airbook form factor, SSD, nonethe less the price!!! Then I came to notice in the end............... "The MacBook Wheel isn't real by the way it's a joke." Now I think, will Apple ever had thought of this "unproductive" idea, typing is way faster than scrolling word to word...... Very good job from Onion (I love the movie Onion News), I wonder how much time they spent on making these visual..........
I like the creative copywritting on this joke: The Wheel - Reinvented. One Button - Endless Possibilities.
When will PC people realize that jokes against Macs wont make PC's suck less.
Come on, it's a spoof in good fun. And Macs are internally virtually identical to PCs nowadays anyway, so that point has been moot for quite some time.
You should try growing a sense of humour.
I agree, I'm not anti-Mac or PC, I just don't have the money to spend on Apples overpriced tiny notebooks and endless amounts of Ipods. I do like the "I'll buy anything new or shiny from Apple" because i know people like that. Why buy an Iphone, Ipod, and 3 different Mac laptops??? Because they just came out that why! What really bugs me is when someone latches onto PC or MAC and just bashes the other while endlessly praising the one they support. It is like listening to a bunch of country yokels arguing over whether Ford or Chevy is better.
LOL I love The Onion XD Saw the video on another website, cracked me up!
Hahaha.. 45mins typing an e-mail, time well spent. ^^;
I can't believe there are people that actually votes yes they would like the macbook wheel on the poll.
Hahahaha if this wasn't on the news I'd say it would be an April joke but coming from Apple it doesn't surprise me. No keyboard?!?!?! People use the wheel to choose the letter?!?!?! That will take like forever to write a text, we just saw the guy needed 45 min to type an email something we do in seconds with a keyboard. But the real question remained and that was where Andrea Bennett (journalist) hit the hot spot, will the business world will actual work with a computer instead of clicking or playing around. The future of computers is not a wheel that will substitute the keyboard but instead it'll be keyboards with no buttons.
Only a few hundred clicks away to endless possibilites ;)Surely mustavoid that sudoku killer O.O;;
OTL Onion.
Oh crap I fell for the joke xD
Best apple spoof iv'e seen! ....but I don't think the world is ready for "the wheel" yet.. xD
Onion ! ONION! XD
thats the lamest tech of 09. seriously...how do you type?...its just an oversized ipod.
my fingers gonna break lols.
LOL, I believed it for a moment xd
omg i believed it until i read the comments. lol sudoku killer
Nah! i thing a text can be written much faster with a keyboard.... i love mac products, but i don't the "wheel" is gonna work!
Forget the "Sudoku Killer" bit... You guys need to ponder what it would be like to play first person shooters, MMORPGs, and even fighting games on a computer like that. XD
Since when does mac have games worth playing.
Wanna know when? Try the moment the companies were not bias and put the same games for both Mac and PC. Then again, I go way back to the Commodore 64 days, as well as the days I had to make text-based games for a class. So even then, before there was Mac, Apple had games worth playing. Then again, xyanide, I could as easily asked you when will Microsoft put out a version of Windows that is worth using. So consider that. ;)
I actually believed it for a moment haha until he went to demonstrate browsing files and went "Anything you want to do is just a few hundred clicks away".
It's honestly hard to believe it. Then again, The Onion also said that there is evidence that God is bipolar.
HAHAHA!! i can't stop ROFL. "and repeat this process for each new letter" at 58sec. hahaha. 45 mins to write an email. hahaha
i dont know... seems nice but, it looks too slow to type in the wheel for me
I don't think that I'm gonna buy MacBook Wheel since you need such a long time to type a messages to a friend. I will be sticking to my keyboard since I can type much faster than wheeling around.
Do not want, can't use console with a wheel, can you...
LOL funny stuff. But at least we will get to see the real updates today :o) Shame no Steve for the Keynote, but think Phil will do an OK job of it all.
At first I was like "Is this for real??" Then I saw the onion... O_o
Ye got me..ahahahaha!
Argh it ate my comment... You know there is a book called Patently Absurd... about all these patented inventions for really random uses.
LOL!! ^^ no keyboard~ hahaha
macbook whell = super big ipod
That...is the STUPIDEST thing I have ever heard of! I mean, I can type pretty fast, and thus typing things like essays don't take that long. Now imagine trying to type a 10,000 word essay, by having to select each letter at a time. What were they thinking?
Ooops, did I just get fooled into something fake? xP
Yes. Yes you did. :3 Now you must text me a 10,000 word essay on what you have learned while using a standard cellphone. And not the type that has a built in keyboard somewhere on it. I want to be from the type that has you press it numerous times just to get to the letter. And no typos! X3
for a moment i thought this was real but when the laptop appeared it looked really stupid but it works LOL! it really works. seriously i'd rather stick to toshiba, hp etc. if Steve Jobs would release this kind of laptop
LOL that was such a funny watch, read some of the "predictive sentence technology" stuff it frikkin hilarious "the aardvark asked for an aardvark" "the ass brayed the moon" An then the guy goes "everything is just a few 100 clicks away" Sodoku killer!
I've always hated the wheel on the iPod, but replacing a keyboard for one? God no.
how about an iPod with a keyboard?
The mac is only good for music, they just confirmed it. Seriously, will this thing even have a bigger hard drive than an Ipod?
Wait wait wait... Just saw the video. This has to be fake, lol.
It is fake, watch the whole video again and look for them taking the piss e.g. read the quotes on my post 3 comments above
blah, who would want this? you have to mark every single letter in the way the get to your letter... talk about useless... it seems some ppl will buy anything as long as it has the mac logo on it, even if it's pure crap...
Its either a super-thin macbook or a giant ipod! ^_^
LOL I had a funny feeling it was fake. I was bothered by "a few hundred clicks away" XD Good one!
This was a hilarious ruse. All those little details and pokes at Apple make it priceless...and likely fooled a fair number of people. To some of the people above, though: I'm both a Mac and PC user, but neither of that matters here. It's a funny satirical joke.
Had me fooled there for a sec. ^^;; Well made though! This must have cost quite a bit to make.
especially do not want :D
"just scroll to the letter you need" - that made me laugh so loud =DD "it couldn't be easier" =DD
"people use computer for ACTUAL work and not just dicking around" They think that this will actually change the keyboard? It will take you hours to type and only people who want to show off in the middle of starbucks will use them...
just heard summit else funny too. I WILL BUY ANYTHING FROM APPLE THATS SHINEY! haha hillarious...
Sidoku killer lol
I have enough trouble spelling correctly on the kb. How is it on spell check? I'm dyslexic in spelling phonically. I tried learning another language so I could at least spell correctly in some language, but alas, it has proven to be less than optimal.
The line "Everything is just a few hundred clicks away" gave it away :P Another awesome piece by Onion News! This thing looked like a giant Ipod Nano o.O Good little prank :P
45 mins to write an email, but the humming bird battery lasts 19mins? ummmm.! it's neat but stupid o:
Welcome to The Onion. :3
lol major stupidity a wheel in place of a keyboard .....i mean just writing what i just wrote right her on that would take more than 40 minutes and the battery would go dead 19 minutes into writing it lol.....really what i want is to remove the keyboard and the body and pretty much remove the whole laptop and put it in a hand held that has all the option as the regular laptop have it the size of the cd drive but it will be twice as big so you have the usb support and make it run off of sunlight ^^ now in stead of the screen make it a hologram touch screen, hd say 3200 x 2100 minimum to 800 x 600 ^^ now that would be something i would love ^^
Ummmm... If it was logical, The Onion would not talk about it. ^^;;
Is Apple serious?!! This has to be a bad joke? Yeah, it's a joke right? It's gotta be...
Good thing it's fake. *I* don't know anyone that would want that, I mean.. it looks like a giant Ipod. I'd rather have a keyboard especially when my brain has pretty much already memorized what letters are where.
I actually like typing on the keyboard. It gives me the semblance of productivity. If this were real, I'm sure 'Applelites' would be all over it regardless of practical functionality.
man i totally got scammed...damn onion network and their realistic clips
How you type on that thing...a macbook which you can't type...great...
Onion can make the craziest news. Pretty innovative this time round though ^^ although typing would be a pain.
I like Mac, but I dont like the iPod, so no.
This laptop makes it harder to type.
hey, thats magic!
That's so not gonna...be popular...
this would've been the single most retarded thing to ever come out from them. too bad it's not real, i would've loved to see more sheep buy and brag about this so i could rofl.
Sorry, Macbook Wheel sucks d0nk3y b@llz with lemmons.
Onion ftw
no keyboard = lack of the ability to play mmos, h-games, and regular games
macbook wheel sux yankee balls... lol, "and repeat this process for the rest of the other letters!" "hummingbird battery only 19 mins!" "unbreakable, unless you drop it!" "screen goes black after 4 seconds!" wow, and the price tag for the 4GB is 10K... crazy stuff there. a first-class joke! i would really hate to have my keyboard replaced... i hate software that guesses what you're trying to type...
must be extremely difficult to type
lol.. too bad this "News report" didn't show users playing games on this macbook wheel.. i can't quite imagine someone playing like say, a fps on it..
lmao... i started watching it with beleif until the guy started using it to type... "I'll buy anything if it's shiny and made by Apple" haha genius
I love the email! Dear Robber, You wont believe where I am# I)m at the Mac Expo aend I am USING thep colic new Macwheel laptop. I’ll BET YOU ARE JEAlouz HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :D
which Macbook is better Danny?
Whoa…this is definitely revolutionary but I’m not sure if it’ll catch on. Ditching the keyboard could be a great space saver and make for ultra light portable laptops but I’m not sure the additional “100 clicks” is worth the loss of a laptops primary source of input (the trusty keyboard). The keyboard is tried and tested and I dont think its time to lose it. Like another poster mentioned, maybe its best to introduce a smaller “Wheel” alongside the regular keyboard and break us all in gently. http://www.jiba-jaba.com – The Home of Public Microblogging
gonna text a word till morning if using that thing wkwkkw
LOL Pretty cool, even though the article is a joke.
My thats is the FUTURE.
hahah my teacher just said "Its a Joke" LOL but WHAT!!!??!?! You have to fricking scroll for each LETTER!?!?!?! THAT SOO MUCH HARDER!!! T___T im not getting thing ~__~
