Tokyo Emergency Measures

Stuck on the 7th floor of a building because the elevators have shutdown and the staircase is blocked by the fire?
Dont panic - just look for something called the "Emergency Laddey" - also known as Hinan Hashigo [避難はしご]. We probably need an Engrish category.

Nice... Why is it called a laddey and what is it, a staircase or ladder?

I guess check and see if there is a fire escape outside?

If not, then make sure to call fire dept in case no one else has yet. (In US its 911, what is it in Japan?) Then hopefully I kind of know the layout of the floor. This way if there is no escape, I can access perhaps the fire hose or activate the emergency sprinklers... help slow down the fire in some way.

Oh and, when you said staircase is blocked, can't go up or down?

Err I meant to ask can't go up either? I figure you definitely meant the staircase is blocked to go down.

Nah not really, I work for 911 services in US, so I have an idea of what to do and don't do.

One of them is to not panic... its definitely easier said than done, esp when you're actually in the situation. (Can't be panicking as a 911 operator/dispatcher when things happen.)

I handle stress situatiosn liek car accidents very well. Course it helps that i work Ski patrol at a local resort in the winter. First time I ever had to keep my cool in something other then a drill was New years day this year, so Thursday. I was just riding aroudn in the terrian parka nd some girl injurred her lower back and dealt herself a pretty nasty concusion we were guesing. All I could do was shut down the jump because I was off duty and didnt have my ID or med bag.

Playing Human Pillon isnt fun...

There is a lady behind the door who will take you down so she will serve as a ladder. Therefore, laddey.
