Partner of an Otaku

(Otaku(215)
Tue 2008/12/23 11:02
Interesting question from Regis below.
Was in a meeting yesterday with some clients. I asked one of them if he watched anime. He said yes but also said that his wife didn't like him watching anime. He has to hide the figures that I gave him...

I'm very fortunate to have a wifey who understand my hobbies. Could be a different story if my hobby wasn't part of my job and a key part of my business strategy ^^;

Original text from regis below.
So here's my question of the day.... Does your girlfriend/wife/mistress/boyfriend/husband/man-whore know you're otaku or have the tendencies? If they do, do they accept it, find it weird, or join you? If they don't accept, or like your otakuness how does it affect the relationship? I got my girlfriend tin to 5 centimeters per second, but she dislikes other anime, and often points out when I'm binge anime watching(you know like a series marathon lol) "you're watching code something something again?" or "those chinese cartoons?" when i tell her about another anime, i then correct her by saying "japanese". So i'd say she's accepting, albeit a bit confused, at my anime love and listens when i go off on tangents on other topics like games and how epic an ending was lol. Anywho, answer if ya like :D

nope, haven't got any girlfriend yet.planning to get one actually.
But i kinda did that to all the guys and girl in my class,
at first they thought i only interested in computer, study and stuff.
one day i brought oppai mousepad to the class and get all the guys and girl
with like WTF?!mouse pad with boobs? and then all of them goes /swt
but in the end most of them end up accepting the fact that i am that "sort" of otaku and think that the "mousepad" is cool.
so yeah, not exactly like your question but at least close enough rite?

I NEVER tell anyone except others that I know are into it. I have had so many bad experiences that I gave up on trying to let people know of my otaku interests and just keep it to myself.

I had a girl once call me immature for 'watching Chinese cartoons on a Saturday night'. Yea it was the damn premiere of Ghost in the shell: Solid State Society. Needless, to say I got rid of her after a while.

However, if someone ask me if I am Otaku, I say hell yes! Damn proud! lol :D

She wanted to go to a club again. I wanted to take a break from the clubs that weekend and just go check out this awesome film. We got into a huge fight because of it and I just went to check out GITS:SAC with my sister. It was awesome! haha.

So after a while we broke up and about a year later she comes back telling me she's into anime now. Watches bleach and naruto, etc. --; WTF? lol

Its something, I dont know I think people are just afraid to be labeled Otaku. Even my Japanese friends, most of which are over 25. I ask them if they like anime, usual response is no. Then I mention GITS or something like Initial D or Dragon Ball and they say oh! oh! I love that show!

It seems to be something that has to do with being labeled as immature or uncool. Personally, I dont care about that. I'm 27 and I'll always rock my anime, gundams, and games for years to come. I just love the art and the 'coolness' of it. I admit there are some areas where it gets a little crazy but that goes for so many other things in life.

Hmm.. I think they are worried that if they are labeled as an otaku, others may not accept them in the way they want them to. I'm studying japanese now and nobody in my class talks about anime openly until I brought up a topic on anime..etc.

since we indonesian have sucky channels, some people are divided into
who follow american drama's/tv series
who follow anime
who follow chinese/korean/japanese love love drama (^^)

most follow chinese love love drama, why? they were DUBBED by our local
american drama was subbed
anime? they go DUBBED by local, which is suck (some are not though)

if they know i'm watching anime, i'm getting sort of "he's childish" gaze
not that i care anymore though

Mom, dad, sisters, school friend, neighbor, everybody know.

Result:
1. Lost some school friend because thinking I'm weird
2. Hated by girl at junior high because she think I was so childish while I never done any wrong to her. Never try to involve her or talking about my hobby to her, but she just hate me.
3. Lost some neighbor friend with the same reason like number 1.
4. Got crazy BLIND friend who understand me.

But so far, I'm happy to be who I am. No lie no need to felling shame. Just go on with my life, that's all.

I don't have a BF right now. My first BF was an otaku: loved Gundam models, watching anime, doing martial arts. He was also somewhat of a weaboo, which was extremely annoying. Another guy I dated knew about my interests, and couldn't stand JPop (or JRock), but then again, he listened to Fall Out Boy and MCR. ^^ The one guy I really like (sort-of dated for a month) knows about it, and I got him into Gackt! Funny, but I don't listen to Gackt anymore.

I think the test should be whether or not they could stand to watch Samurai Champloo with me. That's a deal-breaker. :D

All my friends know. Some of my friends are the reason I got hooked on anime to this extent. As for other friends... I'm to blame for certain addictions... My ex knew about my anime addiction. She wouldn't watch some of the stuff I suggested but she never criticized my addictions either. Try getting your girlfriend into more titles that she might like. If she likes that show Heroes, show her Darker than Black.

just few guys and girls in office who know about my craze for figures and think i'm weird for spending huge sums of money on them. one guy even compared them to barbie dolls ( rofl )

Hmmn.

I don't have a girlfriend.

Most of my family and/or friends know to some degree, though. I don't exactly go around with an 'Otaku' sign on my back, but I don't try to hide my 'otaku-ness'. The 1/4 bunnygirl Nagato on my desk attests to that. In fact, she is watching me type this. Creepy.

In general, I don't have social problems due to being otaku-ish, but finding a girlfriend that doesn't make fun of me for liking Nanoha is the hard part.

I'm quite surprised at university folks calling you a pervert, does that mean they got no healthy interest in the opposite gender?

I have those kind of friends that judge people for watching anime, but since their are so many different kind of anime if you know what your friend is like you can easily find an anime, show it to your friend and they'll end up lovin it.

They don't hate me or nothing and they don't judge OTAKU's anymore (They all seemed interested in deathnote, bleach, and naruto probably because they don't have to read subs.)

If you lose friends because of your interests other than the interests you share, they are no friends imho.

I don't consider myself an otaku (yet) but my gf and some friends know about it and they are all fine with it although some find it strange. But that's mainly because they only know naruto and hentai.

have not had a gf that understands the world of anime, figures, gundam, manga, doujinshi, etc, etc. but hopefully I will have a lucky encounter someday..

as for my indulgence of anime, I'd say people that are around me have become influenced, little or a lot. Take for example my older brother, is now starting to collect gunpla. Very few of my close friends are now starting to ask me for more anime series that are similar to "this" and "that". As for my mother, she reads One Piece (LOL). My father, hasn't budged at all....yet. And the friends that joke around where its sensitive, they say something along the lines of "hey, stop beating off to anime porn"
*blushes and runs away*

People in school/at work/whereever in public don't have to know everything about you. However if you care for somebody and go steady with that person then it's cruel to hide who you are. One of the really cruel things you can do is to pretend to be somebody else in order to make somebody fall in love with you because then it's not "you" that person falls in love with and that's somewhat like fraud and cheating that person.

I didn't say it would have to be the first thing you tell though. It might be somewhat hard to find a girlfriend if you insist on telling about a huge eroge collection when you meet for the first time. (that is, if you have such a collection)

Maybe this strategy will make it harder to get a girlfriend but I'm sure once it happens you will feel a whole lot better and have a better chance of living happily ever after. Now I just need to find the right girl for me and proof my theory. Then again no girl left me for being honest.

My boyfriend most definitely knows!
Ive only dated like one person who wasn't really into it, and that was just a mistake period.

During highschool I actually got all my goth friends into reading manga by loaning them all mine. Chobits was the most popular, and Ai Yori Aioshi(sp? I dont remember) was the second. However, I lost a few from loaning them out, but that's a small price to pay for spreading the otaku-ness!

lol, thats wot I did. I was the 'Manga Library' Chobits was also a popular one here. And Tokyo Mew Mew for the girls. Love Hina for the boys. But Chobits was universal lol.

Huh. Chobits is an universal thing indeed. All the girls into manga that I know of either own the entire manga or have at least read it. Which is something I actually found curious.

Love Hina seems surprisingly 'universal' as well.

Wow, can't believe that I haven't answered this question yet. Currently, I don't have a GF yet, but I do have a pretty close friend, who is a girl, and is an Otaku as well, so no problems there. When I probably do have a girlfriend, she'd be an otaku to... I guess...

Other than that, most of my guy friends like Anime in one form or the other. Haven't come across anyone, thankfully, that thinks Anime is childish or whatnot.

My parents, though they think I'm wasting money, don't mind me splurging on figures nearly every week.

Dont have a girlfriend, but most people at my school know that I am otaku, but they dont know any details, for example that I am interested in 2D-girls.
But if I had a girlfriend I would tell it her, because otherwise I wouldnt be fair to her and she wouldnt know my real self and the relationship would be pointless because it couldnt grow. If it grew she would eventually find out about the hobby and that would be worse than if you told her in the beginning.

My friends and family all know. Dad likes to be annoying when I watch anime but that's it. Bro can stand to watch Bleach but that's about it. Mom and grandparents don't care. Grandparents specifically say they're happy I read so many books (manga ^_^.) Friends like to rag on me about it from time to time but it's all in good fun and they really don't care. (One of my friends that dislikes anime even says that Kamina looks like he owns. XD) Two of em are into anime somewhat cause of me. One watches Code Geass and Bleach and the other watches Soul Eater, CG and Gurren Lagann. Have otaku friends as well so we all know how that goes. And no gf even though I asked someone out recently.

Honestly, guys and gals, if your partner isn't down with your Otaku ways, that's fine. The main part of a relationship is that your partner respects your interests. If this is not happening, then you are with the wrong person.

My last girlfriend always yelled at me for watching anime not because its anime or anything like that. She just always said that I watched too much cartoons like I am a little kid. And of course when she sees the more ecchi series, well lets just say she would jokingly call me a weird pervert and something about just be a normal pervert and watch some real girl on girl porn or something...

My friends accept me for my otaku-ish nature, hell some of them are worse than me.

Evil, perhaps, but it makes thing so much easier if they can mutually appreciate such finer things in life. (^ω^)

I believe that my ex-girlfriend didn't really have much of an idea about me watching Animes, she knew that I had an interest in Japan, but probably not to the extent that I do ^-^. We're REALLY good friends now and she makes fun of me for it (In a jokingly 'were friends' kind of way) but she knows it's who I am and I wouldn't change for anyone.

TBH maybe that's why I'm not that popular with girls, it's hard to find ones around here that 'get me' and my tastes.

My parents don't really know just how deep I am in - they know I watch anime fairly often though. My sister seems to have a better idea, but neither she nor my parents care because they're into Asian dramas. ^^; They basically treat anime as my version of 'em.

My little brother does know - when the rest of my family started watching dramas I quickly introduced him to anime so I could have an ally. xD He's also the only one who knows just how much money I'm spending.

Friends sort of know - not the full extent, but they keep their opinions, if any, to themselves. As for significant other - I'm not dating right now, but my last girlfriend was the one who introduced me to anime to start with. Life's ironies: she doesn't watch anime any more.

^^; I don't have the time to handle both. I've been binge-watching anime since the York strike started 6 weeks ago and my anime watch-list has barely felt the dent. I blame CrunchyRoll and DC for this predicament. All those news items and "other people also like..." links keep adding stuff to the list faster than I can watch them.

I never really felt like it was something to be ashamed of, so for the most part I've never tried to hide it. A few of my previous partners weren't into it, but I wasn't into alot of their things either, so we each had fun on our own within our spheres of interest. Admittedly though, there's a weird double standard applied between female otaku and male otaku. in my experience, it seems like nerdy otaku ladies are deemed more acceptable(to an extent), whereas if it's nerdy guys there's something wrong with them. which is retarded on so many levels >:(

I don't have a girlfriend, but my interest in anime and games is something I would tell her early in the relationship should I ever have one in the future. This way there are no surprises later on and I can find out right then and there what she thinks of it. I would personally prefer to have a girlfriend that's also into the same things I am, but then again who doesn't.

My family and friends know about it to different degrees. All of my friends are int anime and games as well so it's no big deal to them. As far as my family goes my Mother is probably the only person that know how deep my interest is. When she saw my first figure she just simply glanced at it, asked what it was, and said "that's cool". So she's not bothered by it at all, in fact she herself can be considered an otaku with her interests.

At first, my current gf had a personal resolution to never date an 'otaku', mainly because of their obsession with 2D girls that are perfect. This leads to the syndrome of finding normal human characteristics as faults, and less than perfect. Girls wanted to be loved for who they are. But since I'm not really that much into 2D girls, things turned out okay. Just have to reassure the girl that despite your hobbies, it doesn't affect the quality of attention you give the girlfriend.

She also has had some sort of exposure to early childhood 'anime' such as Doraemon and Saint Seiya, so she's more open to new things that are released these days. I think that if the girl doesn't have any exposure to it, it is not a good idea to share your intense passion with it. Just keep it in on the first date. After all, you don't want to let a good one run away just because of your hobbies. Over time, you can share it with her, once she has feelings for you, and reassure the girl that it won't affect anything.

never had a GF in my whole life.
But am really glad the Girl that I like also likes anime stuff although she doesn't watch them but says they're cute. I gave her a Shiro Togi (Fortune Arterial) Tea cup for xmas since she likes cute stuff... My parents and lil bro knows that I am a hardcore hobbyist good thing they accepted my hobby.. My lil bro is not into anime thus doesn't have interest in what I do.. it's kinda embarrassing to mention this hobby to friends when especially they knew my bro and his hobbies. Kinda like immature bro and mature bro. Well.. whatever. This is what I am so there's no problem for me but some people tend to misunderstand this kinda stuff...

My girlfriend watches anime faster than I do...
I got her into collecting figures, but she's always watched anime and read manga.

We first met over discussing manga, it's a key part of our relationship, I think :3~

Oh I make it very well aware that I am an otaku or super nerd to either keep people away at home/outside and even at work. The boss knows I can do my job very well it doesn't effect my day job. It's just that I'm pretty weird guy at work. I don't talk to anyone and what I surf can freak people out.

As for a wife or GF, I pretty much plan to die alone and not be married or attached to anyone. So yeah, life is good for me :)

I don't talk about anime with people who don't watch it. It's too hard to explain things to them. One of my friends saw my roommate's Yuki Nagato towel and was saying how freaky it was with such a small nose. All the anime hate here probably stems from the idea that cartoons are only meant for kids.

Luckily my boyfriend is a dork as well. He's not -that- much into anime as I am, but he does watch it and we will watch stuff together. I'll suggest him some series and he'll normally watch them. We're currently watching Tales of the Abyss as it's released.

I'm sure he'd rather prefer an anime novel to a manga, atleast I would imagine so seeing as he's an avid reader.

He's seen my collection of figures/dragons and it doesn't seem to bother him. He's joked about him having to make the move because of all my stuff, it'd be a pain to ship it all and so much of it can be broken.

It's nice having someone so accepting and loving of my oddities. Any weird things I say/do we jokingly blame on my "tumor" in which he has named "Alice."(I don't really have a tumor.. to my knowledge, that is.) My name being Alicia, it fits. I even introduced him to the Gothic Lolita fashion that I so adore. ^^

I recommend getting him the Shakugan no Shana, Banner of Stars and Ghost in the Shell novels, then. Assuming he doesn't already have them.

Those are readily available in English. Bit late to get one for Christmas, but you can always keep them as an option for birthdays. :p

It's actually kind of hard to find them in book stores here. I'm not sure what novels are out, so I guess that doesn't help. I was debating picking up the Twelve Kingdoms novels. I've watched the first DVDs and liked it, so I figured he might enjoy the books. It was that or the Vampire Hunter D novels.

All he's read so far is the novel for The Melancholy of Suzumi Haruhi. I believe he said he read it online somewhere, but he liked it.

His birthday is coming up in March, so I could always pick some up for that. Thank you for the suggestions.

No GF at the moment. My last one (about 2 years ago) was into some anime. Sat through all of Utena with her (Enjoyed it BTW - Save season 2, but that's another debate). Thought all was good till I was deemed "Not intellectually stimulating enough" and let go. Sometimes I feel it affected my fandom to some degree. So I'm hoping to find another lovely lady to share my fandom with...someday (Though often it feels not soon enough)

My fiancé is pretty tolerant towards my otaku-ness I think. She watches animated features but I doubt she'd watch a whole anime series with me. When I got my last order of figures (Figma Kanu and Revoltech GL: Yoko), she was pretty jealous that I spent a couple of hours posing and playing with them! ^__^

I've yet to show her this site which I think on first glance to the untrained otaku eyes, it's a bit ecchi/hentai with all the 2D and 3D girly pics sprinkled throughout...

No girlfriend, but I am really silent about my "otaku-esque" interests.

I guess you could say that I'm embarrassed about liking anime, manga, figures, and the like. I don't really know why, but when the subject comes up, I tend to clam up, even around friends and family who enjoy it as well; additionally, I always feel akward looking in the Anime DVD section of stores like Best Buy, or looking in the Manga section of a Barnes and Noble.

I guess it stems from a lack of confidence in myself, and caring too much about what other people think about me. Interestingly enough, this problem also goes right back around to the fact that I am currently single. As a friend of mine put it, "How can anyone love you, if you don't love yourself?"

I'm working on it though. Going to do what I can to make 2009 a better year.

seeying some usa anime fans I can understand why you are emberrased XD.
Heck, I live in Holland but due to some annoying fans that think their mission is to convert every single person into liking anime and not accepting that some people just do not like to watch it.
I think it is going too far that when you meet somebody the only thing you talk about is anime, I've seen it happen and I'm emberrassed when some people associate me with being like that.

As for my own girlfriend, it would be fun that she would also like it as long as it isnt the first thing she says when she meets me.
And it would also help if she didnt use simple Japanese words like kawaii trough her vocabulary my ralationship would not last a day ^^;.

Sometimes she acts really freaked out about it. ^^; I try to be careful until she learns more about how I am towards it. It calms her some when she realizes some of the business aspects. I'm sure she will be more tolerant when I can show her results.

She is ok with Gundam. For some reason she really likes Zakus. ^^; She has one hanging from her mobile phone. ^^ It surprises her to see so many older men in the Gundam shop in Osaka. ^o^ There are many movies and shorts like Byōsoku 5 Centimeter that she really enjoys as well. I guess you could say she is typical Japanese about it all.

But then again I also like girly stuff like cute kawaii clothes or other things >_< I guess I have too many interests.

My hubby was very into western animation & gaming before we get together, I introduced him some of good Animes I know & he got hooked, lol. Since then, he loves to watch Anime with good storyline & animation :D usually watch anime / j-drama together during dinner on weekdays or lunch + dinner on weekends at home.

I guess we both quite lucky to have similar hobby & interest, but then again since we both love collecting figures & play console games, it really ripped off our wallet fast ^^;

My experience is that people often have a stereotypical view of what an otaku/nerd looks like, and if you dont look like that they tend to be much more accepting. I'm a rocker guy and plays in bands on and off and people/gf's rarely have a problem with my geeky hobbies and love for all things kawaii, but other guys that look otaku/nerdy to them they usually look down on.

well my first boyfriend hated anime and computers and all my habits, it ended up straining our relationship and i left him after he just pressured me to give up everything. (plus he was a huge jerk) my current boyfriend is supportive, he's actually into anime as much as me, but isn't into figures, he does understand which figures are good and which are bad, but he is into gundam models and i know nothing of them. for me a boyfriend would have to be supportive of my figures since it's a big part of my life and i've met people who sell of their collections cause their loved one doesn't approve and i couldn't honestly do that since i'd want someone to accept me for who i am.

Otaku is still pretty much a term of contempt in Japan. It's not without reason as there are some very, very sad otakus.

If you ever get over here, try to call yourself a maniac instead. It sounds strange to English speakers, but it basically means an enthusiast and does not have a negative connotation.

Consequently I call myself a wargames maniac.

My wife is very supportive of my hobbies, as are my two 20 something sons. I don't consider myself an otaku, rather an anime enthusiast as I don't game or read a lot of manga. I do collect figures tho, 62 at the last count. And I find hentai boring.

My family knows that I'm into anime. My brother is into anime (he's also into wrestling), my parents know and they don't really bother me (my dad was the first to buy a figure actually though) and my little sister is "kinda" into anime (she likes watching the dubbed ones like the anime in Cartoon Network. I think she has only watched Mirmo de Pon though).

The majority of my high school friends love anime. They are actually the ones responsible for me liking anime. Only a few college friends watch anime; most are from the Karatedo society I'm in. Hell, the karate sensei is really into anime! For the friends that aren't into anime, they don't really care.

Don't have a girlfriend. Never had, never will.

I think I'm the only one that really is into otaku stuff like figures x_x

My girlfriend was into manga and a bit of anime before I started going out with her, which was pretty fortunate. She's nowhere near as much of an addict as I am, which sometimes she reminds me of, but it's good to have someone that's actually interested in what I have on the shelf!

The only thing I think she is slightly resentful of is the figures... I couldn't answer the question 'If you had to choose between me or your figures, which would you choose?'...

Fortunate but do not abuse, maybe one step is that don't lose time, time managing is the best way for a couple to understand what are these hobbies for.

Everyone I know, knows how into anime I am and are accepting of it, and only get annoyed if I am pretty much ignoring them if I am having a marathon session of a particular season or I break plans to watch something...but this would be the same for most hobbies I think, not really directed at he anime, but at me
I have never met a girl who had a massive problem with my anime either as everyone likes different things, and as I pointed out to one girl, why is it ok for you to watch a disney film but not ok for me to watch this?
My parents do not understand the figures as much though, especially my father but they just let me get on with it and do buy me them, so cant be all that bad

hmm so far, my dad supports my inclination to draw in manga-style and my mum doesn't disapprove much of it except I can only watch "safe" anime when she's around.

As for friends, I was lucky to find the wierdest people who apparently enjoy anime as much as I do so no problems either...except with one who morphed into a Johnny's Entertainment (JE/Japanese boy band) fan :P

for the bf, he's an avid gamer and enjoys japanese made games and watches the occasional anime...especially if its good and is related to games (fate/stay = win). So it isnt as bad at all...except for some other people :P

If you say "safe", do you mean the non-naughty or the non-violent kind?

Well, my first bf was an Otaku while I wasn't so.. yeah ^^;
Right now I'm not with anyone but, all my friends are Otaku or just understanding of my hobbies.. my family gets it... somewhat.
My mom watches anime with me, so that's comforting.
It'd be nice to meet someone with the same interests as mine/ understand them >.< I think all Otaku want that

Me and my bf both like anime/manga/games. We also have few collections of anime goodies and figures, although we would never spend too much in them. ^_^
Sometimes, I also participate in cosplay events, and I also draw mainly in manga style.

I guess that as long as one is not too obsessive then there's no problem (people has different interests, we can co-exist as long as what we like doesn't hurt other people). Besides, there are so many different types of anime (from childish to really mature/intellectual themes).

I'm surprised (in the good way) by the sizeful amounts of otaku-couples around here. Kind of gives a man hope for the future, does it not.

It'd be kind of interesting to see statistics on the male/female-ness of DC users, I think.

When I first met my wife, she had only heard of anime through one of her brothers, who was tangentially involved in '80s giant robot stuff as a sci-fi fan. I was living at home fresh out of college at the time, she lived 75 minutes away, and she didn't have a car, so in the early days I would always have to go to her city for dates. The only indication she had that I was an anime fan were the breezed through the DVD section of movie stores. I had shown her Spirited Away as a "primer," and we had watched a couple of episodes of Haibane Renmei, which she enjoyed. At any rate, we had been dating for several months before I finally brought her back to my home to meet my parents and see my town, and, of course, my room.

Where the figures lived.

Needless to say, 40 or 50 frozen-pose ladies in various states of dress was not exactly what she had expected to see when she first came over.

I must say, to her credit, she took it like a champ. She was surprised to say the least, and perhaps inside she wondered exactly what she had gotten herself into, but she never questioned or made any kind of detracting comment to me. She just took it as something I was into, but not something threatening or weird or disgusting. She actually took it as an opportunity to learn about different series and different genres that I hadn't shown her before. Now, happily married, we enjoy a lot of series together, and beyond her wifely duty of groaning any time I get a new figure in the mail, she seems to enjoy the hobby herself. We're going to Japan in March for a belated honeymoon, and so far all is well.

I think it's like any other hobby, whether you're an anime fan or a sports fan or an outdoors fan or what have you, so long as it stays a hobby and not a replacement for your significant other, so long as the important business gets taken care of before the pleasures, your partner should just appreciate it as part of what makes you the person you are.

Well said, and I'm glad to hear your wife wasn't only accepting of your hobby, but took an interest in it and now you can enjoy series and such together =)

OT: My s/o knows about my hobby and he thinks it's cool. I got him to try out anime (he likes classics like Cowboy Bebop and GITS) and he in turn got me into figure collecting (he collects Western comic/pop culture stuff while I'm into Japanese figures). We can't wait to move in together and combine our East-meets-West collection, haha.

Unfortunately, I can't even answer this question. As I've never had a girl friend... ;_;

Though I honestly can't imagine any girl not being freaked out if they saw my room full of anime, figures, and videogames. :(

Only me and one of my friends watch anime and even then he doesn't watch nearly as much of it as I do.

Luckily my friends don't mind that I watch anime and even though they find it weird don't hate me for it.

Although when I am watching an episode of Zero no Tsukaima and a friend walks in it can get kinda awkward.

As for my friends, they're ok with me watching anime, as they enjoy it themselves as well.
But, they hate harem and shoujo though..

Well usual thing when people know im an otaku is calling me anime freak, i think i would rather have them call me "you otaku" or something like that instead of "you anime freak."

My friends only knows naruto and bleach and not much else except some older ones like DBZ.

I've been trying to locate a female otaku of similar power levels since coming to college. Quite hard since I believe the disproportionately high number of males to females in the anime club I attend would effectively cut that venue for love simulation.

my husband is a nerd like me (we like scifi, anime, and manga) but he likes video games more than me. he'll watch wutever anime i want to watch with him, he doesnt like watching anime back to back for hours. so there r shows we watch together and other shows i watch by myself cuz i dont want to wait for him. he reads mangas i buy and have in the house physically (it's harder to get him to read manga on the computer), he'll even reads yoai if it has a good story (and then he calls me gay :P ).

Well, well, well. I posted a Similiar topic to this one on a BBS some time ago and never really got an answer from the users of that BBS.

The girlfriend know I'm otaku, she isnt an otaku herself but she's atleast willing to let me do my thing with it. I've actually been trying to slowly assimilate her to it, perhaps get her to watch it with me. Sadly most of the anime I ahve on DVD her dad would most likely get into considering he's into the stuff I like. Shoot em ups, action, sci-fi basic shonen and shonen-ai anime. Often when i go out to buy a series I'm buying because its something I want to see or ahve seen and want to watch again. She's sensitive to violence and gun play so she wouldnt be into Gunslinger Girl, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell.

Anyways! She's supportive, she was suprised when she witnessed the vast amount of pinups and mini posters I have from various anime. She isnt supportive of addiction to Final Fantasy and my almost pyschotic need to beat every possible boss in the games.

My girlfriend likes anime too so it's all good!
I don't think she knew much about it before we started going out though, I think she kind of guessed I liked that stuff when she saw my bedroom! The first one we watched together was the 1st GitS film. She really liked it so I lent her the 2nd film, then the two series and OVA and then the 3 manga!!! She really liked it!!! I also managed to get her into Gunpla too, well nearly anyway =] She wants to get MG Wing Zero Custom so we can make it together =]
We're gonna watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time together soon too, I think she'll ike it =]

Haven t had a gf since grade school ;.; ouch lol
I think that any relationship should know each other to the extremes! I mean it could be a deal breaker farther along right? Luckily for me all the girls and guys and well everyone at my school even the teachers (except for the anime club sponsor which is ironic) loves anime, manga, hentia or some other form of Otaku interest...

I wasn't really into anime until my friend introduced me to it. Up till then I watched Dubbed anime's on Saturday like Cowboy Bebop and Inuyasia(I know i spelled it wrong...). Now I've dropped Pokemon Digimon and have moved on to more mature stuff. Its fun to look back and see how you have evolved eh? lol.
