Donations Not

(Otaku(45)
Sun 2008/02/03 20:02
I get a load of mails from folks asking me where the "donate" button is on the website ^^;

I don't believe in asking users for money unless I'm going to start selling otaku merchandise (hint hint ^^;) so unfortunately I wont be placing a donate button anywhere.

Folks who want to support dannychoo.com may however want to install the Alexa Toolbar.
Alexa measures internet traffic via the Alexa toolbar that can be installed in IE or Firefox.
Alexa are owned by Amazon.com - I used to work with Alexa when I was at Amazon HQ Seattle and can tell you first hand that one need not worry about installing evil spyware.
The screenshot is of my Windows IE and Mac Firefox with the Alexa toolbar installed which you can download and install from here.

Not only will this help my Alexa ranking, it will also help boost the Alexa rank of your own website too (if you have one).

The toolbar will also give you an indication of what sites are popular and help you spot phishing sites - for example, a site claiming to be eBay with an Alexa rank of 1 million is most definelty a phishing site.

My Alexa rank is about 8,400 which means (by Alexa's algorithm) that dannychoo.com is ranked 8,400 in the world.

The rank gives me an indication of how healthy the site is in terms of traffic/growth and serves as a source to see how the new features/navigation/content etc are doing - this feedback is important for me as it helps me decide what sort of features get added/removed, what sort of content you like/dislike etc.
It also helps me understand server load and spot problems too.

Installed, but there is no tool bar. >_<

Other than that, and a little bit of font colour mismatch, everything is working fine, it's a great add-ons! ^^

Let us all gather our powers to push dannychoo.com to the toppppppp!!!!

But seriously, I've never wondered why the site has no donation button; because, well, singapore has a famous blogger who has links to advertisement sites like those on your own site, and i heard that she gets paid whenever people go to those sites, so i pretty much assumed that yours worked pretty much the same...... i keep get a feeling that i'm totally wrong...

Meh, this is actually one of the sites that I would like to see the ads on.

But the problem is that I am using Kaspersky Internet Security (one of the very few good things that has came out of Russia), with adblocking on. Even though I've put Dannychoo in the Whitelist to not block ads I still can't see them. On Moetron, for example, I can though.

Really interesting little app actually. I like seeing how some of the other sites I visit rank as well. Some surprising results.

Anyway, hopefully dannychoo.com will rise upwards and beyond!!

I always loved the Alexa concept but I felt it was a bit too much of a game to regularly go to the site and type random names to see their degree of popularity...
But there is a toolbar now! How cool is that?!
Thanks!

This is a nice tool to have around. I have been using it for a few years now.

For those of you using Vista check your security settings. I haven't tried it out on FF in Vista yet. It works fine with FF in XP.

You know Danny, I've often wondered if you were planning on offering merchandise thru your site. I imagine it could be quite beneficial for you with your established fanbase and ties to the industry. I do however realize by now your intentions are to allow readers to share in the experience of owning items they covet rather than commercial gain.

Quite the undertaking depending on the scope, but I've witnessed how passionate you are at improving your site. I'm sure it'll be quite successful if you decide to implement. Don't forget though that the consumer is a fussy creature with little patience for limited supply, delays, and imperfection etc. As a businessman who deals with people everyday I'm confident you've taken it under careful consideration.

As always, I wish you much luck on your future endeavours Danny-o. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

I agree with Fats. No one minds friends making money, especially if its things that we feel are worth the money we are getting it for. My friend recently said how excited he was with his backyard, and hoped that I made some decent money off of it. I have never felt anything is wrong with it, as long as I wasnt being swindled or convinced to buy something that I wouldnt like or appreciate. I wouldnt do this to my friends, and I know they wouldnt do it to me. We have all see what happens when people get to commercial and let the monetary side of it influence their better judgement.

Yeah, you can start offering merchandises anytime Danny, since, just as Dragun said, as a friend, I trust you will remain objective and say what is real about merchandises you offered, just like how you always do your reviews. ^^

However, the rank to my blog refers to blogger.com instead of my url. What can be done to fix this problem?
