See more photos showing the comparisons between the Singapore and Hong Kong version of ToLove-Ru. The Hong Kong version is pretty much the same as the Japanese version but the Singaporean version has had Lala-chans gorgeous pupils rubbed out... Also heard from Singaporean readers about ecchi pages ripped out from magazines before they are sold in Kinokuniya @.@
cant really see the diff but hk one seems clearer and better?
oh yea my eyes can see the eyes now haha Censorship ftw
Censorship is evil :(
yeah Hong Kong you rule!
lol @ ripped out pages. I wonder who rips the pages out? Maybe the Kinokuniya in Singapore should consider wrapping magazines in plastic like we do in Los Angeles. I think that's why Kinokuniya wraps manga and magazines in L.A.'s retailer, to keep customers from stealing pages from newly stocked manga and magazines.
I think it's more like Kinokuniya took out the ecchi pages before they put the mags on shelf ^^" But is it even the right thing to do lols..
Word? Singapore is that strict on censorship? I must say but wouldn't this make the sales and business at Kinokuniya in Singapore bad? Knowing this I would not buy anything from Kinokuniya in Singapore. It's like going to Mc Donald's and getting a Big Mac without the 2 beef patties.
I don't think Kinokuniya does that- it's the customs officers who do it. Once I ordered a non-adult manga by doujin writer Awatake Takahiro, and when it arrived it had marker marks all over it. Although I'd paid for it, they allowed me to get a refund, which they don't really have an obligation to do anyway. It was nice of them, and I'll keep using their services. btw, they said the problem (censorship) was much worse with the chinese manga from HK.
Then again, that's the Malaysian (KL) branch, so I really wouldn't know about the Singaporean ones. Just bought two copies of School Rumble from the Takashimaya outlet during the Christmas Sale last year, which doesn't really have much to censor anyway.
They ripped out a few pages of illustration in the Shakugan no Shana light novel (Mandarin version).
I buy Dengeki Hobby... sometimes they rip off the the pages with cast off figures. Mostly the customs ripped the pages... was so angry with it..
Well that's censorship for ya. If I bought something with pages ripped out, I would rage all over the store.
kinokuniya have been doing this for ages now.... nothing new.
Wow......if that were the situation in L.A.'s Kinokuniya I wouldn't have a stack of magazines in my home as we speak.
Guys, it's not the bookstore's fault that they have to rip out pages or sell censored items. : It's Singapore's censorship LAWS. They could very well not sell those magazines at all, instead of going through each and every one and removing the offending pages.
Do you guys actually buy these magazines and/or manga? What do you do if you want a copy with all the original printings?
Beg, Borrow or steal. Seriously though, scans can be found elsewhere. Also, why should I buy locally and get this sub-standard manga when I can simply import the Hong Kong ver. at other manga shops or even online?
Scans/scanlations cannot compare to owning original printed material. I downloaded scanlations of Kodomo No Jikan manga for volume 1 but i would rather own an actual copy, which is impossible due to the cancellation of Kodomo No Jikan manga in the states. I never finished reading Kodomo No Jikan either. As for ordering online for un-abused material, that's what i wanted to know and confirm. I could not stand buying material that is not complete.
That I can agree... But manga is expensive... For instance, NEGIMA was a series in which I started reading scans of. I wanted to actually hold the manga and read as I prefer it to reading on the PC's screen due to the strain on the eyes. However, each volume of the American version (uncensored) was about 18 SGD. Twice the price of the censored version (local). ARGH! Tell me they are not forcing me to turn to illegal copies.
That's just unfair. -wry- While I can understand your argument that censorship is bad, I do not agree that manga is expensive. You're probably a victim of markup, but I've recently been getting manga from bookdepository.co.uk - the latest Negima! volume (20) sells for 6.16 pounds (~13 SGD) with free worldwide shipping; earlier volumes are cheaper. In Sydney, manga retails for 15AUD up. We don't even have local versions. -wry- Truth is, no one is 'forcing' you to turn to illegal copies. If you want to support a mangaka/production studio enough (or want to have a copy enough), you'd buy it anyway -- and that's from observing a few hardcore otaku friends of mine. (It's like saying I can get ebooks, so they're forcing me not to buy this book by pricing it at 18 bucks...and 18 bucks and up IS the rrp of normal books here. Freaking annoying.) Actually buying a physical copy of what we enjoy for free online should be the goal for most people who can afford it. If you can't, at least spread the word if you enjoyed a manga or anime, is how I look at it. :) Then again, I did live in SG for most of my life, and only got into anime/manga in Australia. -wry- With every meal of substandard quality and an average of 10AUD (which is cheap), I probably have a different idea of what's cheap or expensive.
Lol. Soulmate! I'm pretty picky about what I actually invest my somewhat limited funds into, but Kodomo no Jikan would be one of the first manga to wander straight into my shelf.
What happens if you guys get caught in public with said ecchi manga material?
I used to, then I just got tired of spending money on magazines that piled up. If you're desperate enough, there's always a way to bypass censorship laws beit (illegally) importing a copy in or etc.
Please... Even Code Geass was censored... WHY? I tell you... This country is getting more and more on my nerves with their ridiculous 'Censorship' laws. Conservative society? Why deny others the freedom just so that you won't offend the minority? Frankly, I feel sad that I live here (for some reasons), though I am glad for others. Really. What does a difference of 2 sploches do? People are so afraid that these things will corrupt the young. Just look at the movies, magazines and other things that contain so many other vices. Why are people so conservative? I fail to understand. For my full rant about censorship and how ridiculous this is, please see: http://actar.wordpress.com/2008/11/01/censorship-everything-you-need-to-know/ Even though this has been going on for a long time, this is really, really low. I can't express my feelings for this, but it is really something I feel strongly about.
heck we should be grateful Chuangyi is even bothering to license the series in the first place. in any case, it's not as if CY's version is the only ony available here. the good thing about a free market is that we can purchase taiwan and HK versions in one of those smaller retail shops in the heartlands. that's how i have been getting my ecchi fix ^^
<quote>in any case, it's not as if CY's version is the only ony available here. </quote> EXACTLY. The non-censored HK and Taiwan version are readily available even in Kinokuniya. My old copies for Tongli-published Saiyuki had nothing censored out, which was awesome. Chuang Yi has to censor 'sensitive' material because it's printed in Singapore.
Ripped out? Wow, talk about overdoing it. Erasing it is bad, but ripping the pages goes on a whole different level.
That's messed up. They should stick with the artist's original illustrations.
before the local publisher censor it, they have to get the author's consent first before proceeding.
pretty much the same situation going on here, but ours use more traditional way, black bar. I'm not buying manga anymore, love the scanlation.
Yeah it sucks which is one of the reason why I never buy from Chuagyi(What an irony of the name, creative huh) and not to mention, the paper they used to print manga sucks(toilet paper anyone?) >:
Dude, it's S$5 a copy. (Or has the price increased to $6? I don't know) You get what you pay for.
S$5.50. i was rather pissed when they increase the price from $5 to $5.50. i wrote them an e-mail asking the rational behind the increase, the reply was the standard answer of increase of production cost, paper etc. 10 or 20 cents is fine but 50 cents is too much. thus decided to stop buying naruto and bleach.
aww the price increase was reasonable, at the very least, still comparable to that of the taiwan and HK version...
of course not. taiwan and HK version at least i know nothing is censored!
Well,I'm in Singapore and what can I say, I'm not surprised. It's not Kinokuniya's fault.
Something that I need to mention, Singapore supports CENSORSHIP. They also want us to avoid ILLEGAL or PIRATE copies of Manga and Anime. By censoring the medium, aren't they forcing us to turn to the original uncensored sources via unscrupulous means? DOUBLE MESSAGE RECEIVED!
I much see it the same way. Censorship greatly decreases the quality of the original product. As do bad localizations, horrible voice actors, or whatever the hell else local laws or companies mess the original products up with. Man. I know we Germans are touchy about this, but I'm an adult. Swastika in my Hellsing aren't going to kill me. Don't change them into meaningless patterns. It's not like the manga portrays them in any positive light whatsoever. Stuff like that. Drives me nuts. D: Destroy the original work, expect us to pay out of the nose for it despite that, and then get angry when people either get imports or acquire them via illegal means. Anime that aired in Japan in gorgeous FullHD, yet are only available for sale as DVDs are a bad case of this as well. Darn series can be as good as it wants. If the stuff I pay money for looks like crap compared to what I already have on the drive, it's really hard to actually go out and buy the stuff. =//
=A=;; Every government in the world supports censorship of the media (and of other things as well).
With brillant warmth and blinding light, I knelt in awe as a thunderous voice commanded me, "Tho shall luv thy nipples".
lol. you never fail to brighten up a post.
damn the censorship board now i miss those pupils ^^;
And Hong Kong is the winner. The singapore one looks just like the scans from the magazine, all censored.
well I remember some publications in Malaysia just censor by drawing with marker a permanent "swim suit" over any nudity ^^; kinda sad in a way =_=
Yeah Chuang Yi used to do that around 8-10 years ago. They've gotten better with their censoring techniques over the years.
Censorship here is even worse... for imported publications they ruin it with markers, while for translations they add in lines, draw their own swimsuits, blank out the whole body so it's just an empty frame... it's sad.
Censorship in Singapore wins. qq
Do these censors think that by removing images of nipples and genitals, the overall moral value of the country will improve? That by censoring, they are protecting our "innocent minds"? Or are they doing so just to appease the people who will raise hell about it? Please... censorship is stupid. It spoils the original intention of the artist, and is also a form of privacy intrusion ie Big Brother knows best, and Big Brother says nipples are bad for you. Instead of censorship, why not strengthen age restriction rules? Forgive me if Im incoherent. I just woke up.
cencorship is needed for our future and our children!!!!
Well to be fair... The HK version is wrapped with the "Over 18 years of age" warning just like Full Metal Alchemist has. I don't know if the writer took it off or not but, the Singaporean version doesn't which means anyone can just pick up the Manga to view. I think just erasing the "pupils" is kind of stupid although I guess it makes it look like the character's just wearing a body suit.
Yeah, Danny didn't mention it so I was wondering when someone would. The HK version is actually marked 18+. meaning it's sold as adult material - hence the lack of censorship. The Singapore version sits on the rack, along with the other regular material that any kid could pick up and read. As such, I don't have any issue with this at all.
As long as they don't start censoring pupils on the internet, I think I could survive in Singapore. :) Still books and dvds aren't cheap in Singapore, I had to sit on the floor in Borders because it was so full of people reading and this was 9pm on Sunday. heh
Singapore hates nipples.
i don't like nipples myself - not that i hate them or anything i instead like imagination-inducing steam. Gets the mind going.
My imagination is not as strong as it used to be... Wanna see! :)
Ripping out magazine and sell it i believe is a crime. Remember, seller should selling new product, ripping the product equal to sell used product. Unless you had noticed by the seller previously, if you buy a mags and found out it was ripped off, you can sue or at least ask for refund. Censorship is good, however the way of doing that is wrong. I believe Hongkong already using the right term of censor. Remember, the meaning of censor is to sense the content and judge the rating. If the rating said 18+ then the book publisher must follow that regulation by putting 18+ tag on the book. If the book publisher ask for lower rating by requesting "Teen rating" for example. The censor board must giving the qualify for that rating and asking the publiher to make the mod (like removing nipple, or covering crotch area with their own way. But if the publisher want to be original then they must use 18+ rating. I hope this one giving enlightment for people who still didnt understand of how respecting art and giving a regulation of this kind of "nipple, nekkid, and dolphin" matter.
well... we humans are hypocrite afterall those who support this kind of "freedom of expression" (as in WE) will be counted as: a) perv (which most human are anyway) b) deviant snobs (some people love anime-ecchiness, some/most hate it, they prefer real human ecchiness) c) all anime character is celebrity XD, of course they need censorship when their photo taken naked :)
Varu.... our pornogaphy law make me crying. It full of nonsense, harrasing woman, and event violating the basic law (UUD 1945 pasal 28) and human right and privacy. I can't believe it this kind of law are passed by our government....
Hong Kong all the way!
I wouldn't buy a magazine with pages ripped out... Damaged product = no sales. Censorship is the reason the internet is so wonderful ^^
I never buy censored manga or ripped magazine anymore. Instead, i read it at the book store and leave it that way, hahahahaha...
wah lu... anak ga bener kau
simple. draw the pupils back yourself. ('~')
Rubbing out nipples? That's too much!
Blasphemy!
The reason why many are turning towards the internet for their goods. Such techniques are already outdated.
i don't really understand the logic behind Singaporian's mind they don't seem to be shocked to show naked women and boobs but they erase the tits do they also show murder scenes but erase blood ?
If To Love Ru is like this... whats the japanese love hina like? Cos in the UK there are no pupils at all. Is that how its always been? I wouldn't complain though, since I was only 13 when I read it, any further perversion and I would be beyond help right now lol.
i've read some scanlated love hina japanese volumes. even they dont have the pupils. i wonder if the scanner might have removed those, but considering the amount of work i'm sure it was not there originally. someone having the original jp versions could throw light on this i think.
Kind of late, but they don't have them. I am not sure if it's a Shounen (as in "Shounen Magazine") matter or a Koudansha matter. Most likely the latter. So, there you go.
MDA is known to censor......censor.......censor even our anime shown on okto are also censored...
AHA! Pupils...I get it now :P For one second there I thought you meant the actual pupils, but couldn't find any differences -_-" I do believe they erase pupils here in Norway to, but that's probably because 99% of the manga here is imported from UK/US. I vote Hong Kong
i just got it as well thx to you
Can't see the diff between them >.<
Can't blame Chuang Yi; after all, they're publishing children's manga alongside this... but still, I wish there wasn't that censorship. :( Then again it would have been real hard to explain as to how I suddenly aquired six less-than-clean books to my dad...
That is why i hardly...touch singapore translated mangas...
This is why I'm thankful to live in North America ^^;
raw manga pics really rock! now i love hongkong. :D
Hmm, is this really necessary.. the ones who would be offended by it probably never read manga anyway:)
I'd go for the HongKong since I don't mind getting MORE fanservice.
no manga available here and importing it from jp or uk/us the shipping turns out to be costlier than the product. so me turns to internet.
You see having nipples rubbed out isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. But the whole ripping out pages thing is just stupid. I mean it would suck if I bought something with pages ripped out...
*WARNING, everything below is just my 2 cent and nothing more* I think the censorship is to make the law maker and not the public. It's there to control the people and "choose" what they can intake. (I think they would sensor the internet if they could, which is kinda strange for such a "western" asian country to have so many bounding and rules)
I personally don't think censorship is bad. It in no way harms anybody. Personally, I don't need foul language or nudity to spice up entertainment. Besides, it's not so much an attempt to keep "questionable content" from level headed adults. It's more an attempt to keep it from minors who's parent's can't be there every single second of the day to monitor their entertainment intake. As a single father of 3, I have no choice but to leave my kids alone at home a couple hours Monday through Friday. I've placed checks and balances where they are needed as any responsible parent would, but there are ways around just about everything. I see censorship as a type of a helping hand. Besides, in this day and age, if uncensored material is desired, there are tons of places to find them. If not the exact media, then one like it. So it's not like adults are deprived. Merry Christmas, y'all!
Go Hong Kong...censorship on pupils is wrong...
This is outrageous how could they sensor such beautiful pupils. There a work of art.
haha both are okay with me. But I get no censorship is a big bonus
What do you expect. Welcome to Singapore. Time to migrate to Japan to get the real deal (:
Censorship is apparent at some level in all countries western or asian countries singapore chooses to make the image available to a wider and in this case younger audience by editing where as hong kong has chosen not to edit but to restrict the age of those who can (legally) purchase, age restriction is just another form of censorship just as adult movies are censored for their explicit content via age restriction and japan goes even further censoring both the age of purchasers and visual content of thier av censorship is a compromise of freedom do you remove all forms of censorship and allow everyone to be exposed to material that may contain sexual explicitness, racism, fascism, sexism or any other "ism" that may be or do you compromise your freedom to protect those who society feels need it ie children it is a difficult issue that is handled in many different ways by many different governments if you feel strongly do something about it tell someone, newspapers, use the net don't simply say that you don't like it (just my 2.2 cents worth(gst added))
Singapore is way too law-abiding... as though no one watches/reads ecchi content online. D:
why is ecchi/hentai content censored anyway... just makes it look unnatural why is ero stuff and porn in general censored... makes no sense to me
I'm not from Singapore, but I don't understand that type of censorship ¬¬ If you are going for some ecchi stuff, you know what are you going to see. If you don't like it, just don't buy it, but please, don't spoil things just to have a higher range of buyers o_O
HOng Hong is more free.
I read the Singapore version og Midori No Hibi ,amga but when I watched the anime on the net, Midori had pupils... And I was watching the anime with my younger bro^^;... Censorship is definitely evil!
I bet the censor ship office has a hidden vault with all the ripped out pages... What a treasure trove that'd be.
Don't think they rip out all for all the books. Never encountered any ripped pages in the DHM and mangas i bought from Kinokuniya. Page ripper, is that a job? :P
bah this level of censorship is nothing. I've read novels from the public library with the naughty bit ripped out too. Even non-pictorial is bad for them... -_-"
Wow... i didnt realise to that extent O_O
thank god i'm in malaysia. govt didn't even bother to check the borders bookstore. there, i can get tons of yaoi stuffs. haha
wow that sux
Glad that I live in HK...lol
I choose Hongkong but meh im pretty sure To-Love-Ru manga will not published in Indonesia
