danny, you should advice them next time you see them smoking.
Smoking chicks never turns me on even if she has a face of Miss Universe.
Kids in Malaysia do start early as well around secondary school which is 13.

I love smoking. Without it I wouldnt fancy living too much.

I started at 19 years old, maybe these girls look a little young. I reckon it should be 16 years old like it used to be in the UK.

Girls in Jpan smoke these "Ultra Lights" anyway, which , even if you smoke 20 of them, its like smoking 2 fags. Big deal.

In Mexico the average age to start smoking is 14 years.
Yesterday I see some statistics in the news, they say that among young people boys and girls smoke at the same percentage, girls smoke more and more every day.
I kinda hate tobacco I even stop frequenting friends when they start smoking, but in some places like my school I'm surrounded by people smoking. It's really nasty, and really stupid.

gordon, I feel that asking children to run that kind of errands is wrong in any way. Even if machines don't ask for ID cards.

It is sad indeed, but from what I have read in Doraemon, it seems sending kids on an errand to buy cigarettes is considered alright in Japan.

For instance, I often read stories in which Nobita is asked to buy some cigarettes by his father.

I remember when I was a kid, I often ran errands for my dad to buy his cigarretts, which was pretty common back in the days in Korea. In fact, my grandparents ran a small cigarrette shop and sometimes I would even sell cigarretts to customers even though I was only like 7 years old -_-

Things are a lot more different nowadays of course but just wanted to share my experience ^^; I'm non-smoker btw.

Daijin-kun... smoking in itself isn't banned.. just banned in many public areas like air-conditioned areas, restaurants, pubs, bus-stops and the like.

And it is mandatory to prove one is above 18 when purchasing... but I guess there are loopholes in this law.

Having said that, i do hope one day smoking is totally banned... It even harms innocent bystanders with 2nd hand smoke.. which i totally can't stand

2 possible scenarios:

1) - Oh, what are those?
   - Ah, they are cigarette packs!
   - 'kay!
   - Isn't it funny to use those machines?
   - Yep!

2) - Wah, what are you doing?
   - I'm in an errand for my daddy!
   - I see!

I just hope they won't be early starters...

They're look like they're just buying cigs for dad or one of the lazy elder siblings. The Japanese sure have a nonchalant attitude towards smoking, seems like everyone there puffs the magic dragon. I had my first smoke when I was 10, started the daily habit when I was 16 and quit when I turned 24 five months ago. I don't regret ever doing it though, a lot of good memories and moments came with it.

Underage smoking is not uncommon in Hong Kong. Voluntary trials have shown that it's very easy for teenagers to buy cigarettes from stores and vendors (over 70% success rate). It has been a concern, but actions against the problem has been relatively slow.

While the girls in the photo above simply may look curious about the vending machines, I cannot judge the situation simply from pictures. Nevertheless I won't be surprised if underage smoking is common in Japan, especially in urban areas such as Tokyo.

Sadly, a lot of young kids start smoking just to look or feel cool.
They dont know about the real health hazard and how hard it is to stop smoking once you started.
I wish we had more in-depth infomercials about this subject in my country instead of that 2 and a half seconds crap of "Cigarette smoking is dangerous for your health" written in very small font after each cigarette commercial. The problem is that those tobacco companies dont really want minors (or adults) to be scared of their products. Lets face it, it's business. The earlier the customers starts, the better for them. Near bus stops, shopping malls, behind public toilets, everywhere. Strangely enough, most people I know who became underaged smokers tend to quit around the age of 17-18. Most seem to worry about the impact on their health while others say the financial cost is too much to bear. Few that still smoked appeared like men in their late 20's and 30's when I bumped into them on separate occasions!

That's so sad.... I hate cigarette. It really turns me off. Though there are a lot of smokers in Brazil and publicity is allowed (with appropriete health advice about its problems), majority people is against smoke. I don't remember to see young smokers here.
