7pm in Tokyo - Christmas Lights

(Japan(53)
Sun 2008/12/14 10:41
Outside our house getting some fresh n cold evening air. Interesting to see how more n more Japanese folks are putting up lights outside their house.
We got these lights online from http://www.rakuten.co.jp/ - they are set to turn on when it gets dark - the timer unit is separate and also from Rakuten.

Wow- those look nice!

I also want to decorate my house this year- preferably with blue lights instead of traditional white ones.

you are joking right? those are better in such matters. long exposure time = slow shutter speed. if you not joking, please give an example why expensive cameras are crap.

I'm not refering to the one that Danny use.
I'm refering to my 7 MP Olympus camera. Cost me RM 570 and it still doesn't give the best result.

I'm intrigued by most of the photos i've seen from Japan, streets and buildings looks like a miniature. Is that due to the effect of the lenses or what?

Christmas lights are always fun and a cheerful display. I don't think a ever hung up lights at my place during the holidays. I usually go back to my parents house during this time of year and help them hang up the lights.

I love Christmas lights. A lot of people around here are switching to LEDs, because they use way less electricity, and they tend to give more vibrant colors when lit.

Blue is a "cool" color, thats why you might feel colder then it is.

Most of the people in Hong Kong live in condo building, so light outside is not really a possibility.
However as far as I could see, lights and tree (fake one) near windows are also getting more rare. I guess people just don't feel like seasonal deco that you have spend time and money to put up and take down. (Not applied for Chinese New Year)

Beside there are tons of light outside already~

My family had to take a whole day off work to put up our lights >.>;; Our house has layers of roofing and tons of shrubbery, and it's tradition to light up our walkway and outline the lawn with lights too, so it takes a while. We still don't put up any lights in Japan cuz the holiday spirit is just not like it is in America.

Ah, so X-mas lights for the house are common in Japan, too!
There's a neighborhood across street from where I live that holds an annual competition for the house with the best X-mas lights. I don't know what the prize is, but almost all the houses have lights, and some are too awesome for words.
This one won a few times, I think:

Hmmm, I just notice how densely packed the residential buildings are in that shot...

Interesting you went with simple blue lights though, Danny. It seems to be the choice for a few people around my neighbourhood too this year except they've curled them around pine trees in their front yard. Usually it's multi-coloured or white - we go with blinking multi-coloured ones =P
