Folks who have Windows XP set to automatically get updates will discover that on Feb 12 IE6 will be automatically replaced by IE7. The only way around this is to turn off auto updates or try to downgrade to IE6 after the update...

Unfortunately IE7 is still ridden with CSS bugs meaning that the layout on this site still wont be displayed as I intended it to be orz.
I'm spending less time hacking the site CSS for IE meaning that IE users will experience strangeness. IE users may want to give Firefox a whirl - I do QA mainly on Firefox.

IE7 does improve on IE6 in terms of CSS, although still not enough to compare with other browsers.

Oh joy... Wouldn't it be nice if Microsoft would just take the time to release something CSS compliant for once? -_-

I feel your pain Danny. Even even on my site with its comparatively simple layouts, getting it to work in IE is a real headache... This site must be a nightmare.

Just the thought of CSS on IE gives me nightmares... @.@

I have people tell me it's no problem to write CSS that will work well on all browsers. Just what planet do they come from... ^^

I myself prefer Opera over Firefox, but in my opinion any browser is better than IE6. I doubt that anyone would look back after getting used to one of the alternative browsers. :)

Ahahahahaha!!
Well, Windows Update tries to remind me everyday to get IE7... Since I don't agree, I can't get the supposed recent security updates. Not that I really care about the latter anyway.
I really don't need to change from Firefox and downloading 14+ megs for a browser I just use for checking my e-mails...

Maybe some people have a computer that their evil fater has locked them out of administrator priveliges and so cant download anything. and then maybe that same fater is so evil that he wont even instal things like quicktime because he doesnt think its any use for anything. how the hell are you supposed to convince someone like that to get a different browser? it took my 7 months just to convince him to get Flash player!!

I still use it... :D

I actually really like IE7, haven't had any more popup or spyware problems. That stuff creeped in too easy with IE6 and under. Danny's site also looks fine too, but I haven't seen it in firefox so I wouldn't know if anything is different.

Anyways yeah, after all the firefox praise I was expecting better, but I was pretty dissapointed and switched back. For some reason I just always got memory leaks frequently, it slows my other programs down. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Danny, of course, there must always be one that gets its face in the mud first when exploring new lands.
Good rivals are ones which can surpass each other in succession, to improve selves... However, since Microsoft doesn't try too hard to surpass Firefox, you easily see the results.

I'd be happy if it were IE8 instead and they didn't use the stupid meta tag thing to enable Standards Compliance Mode. Why would such a thing be disabled by default?!?!

To avert the Micro$oft strong-arming, set your updates to download only and prompt you when to install. Then when you see IE7 in the list, skip it.

i'm a web designer/developer and at my work we are all excited to get rid of IE6 lol, its handful to make web sites work for IE6 which has a horrible standard support, no transparency support, no pgn, no min height/width support. IE7 is not much better then IE6 but as a designer/developer I rather people have Ie7 then IE6. I myself use Firefox.

I'm fairly certain that automatic updates has been prodding people to download IE7 for quite some time. It's a real pain in the ass when I get customers at work who have unwittingly upgraded to 7 and suddenly discover that it's eating their system resources or doing all sorts of other wonky things.

The most common problem is the IE7 'run-once' page that overrides the homepage and nags you to confirm your settings. The damn page takes forever to load at the 26.8k speeds these people get and they never seem to be able to figure out how to navigate the damn thing.

It's worse than that... Microsoft paid Mozilla to get part of the source (this is why you got tabs in IE7 etc.), but IE is still worse than Firefox in the end. ^^

Microsoft should really do something about the IE7; I mean, it's already at 7. Respect the number, man, it's got significance! The way they go around trying to earn a bit more money through repairs or the way they just throw out new products (remember the first batch of Xbox 3620s?) is frankly, freaking me out a little.

I'd have to agree. IE bashing is really way out of hand. heheh! And there's not much difference between IE and FF when I browse this site. And making CSS for both isn't a problem really when you know how both browsers behave. ^^ I learned that the hard way. hahah! I'd have to agree though that IE6 sux big time compared to IE7.

Also, Microsoft's main concern really is about backwards compatibility that's why they can't just come out with a fully standards compliant browser just like that. If they didn't concern themselves with BC they'd have no problems coming out with a standards compliant IE. And I have a hunch as to why as well, a lot of enterprise businesses I've been to, especially international companies, uses some kind of web based managing application that only works in IE. Why though I have no idea. Why can't the makers just make it compatible for both browsers anyway? That's make the transition a whole lot easier.

Good news, IE is a pain in the ass to code CSS for and when IE7 came out we had two different versions to deal with..

Good thing this is happening so that we may start using PNG and other features (without external scripts) that was missing in IE6.
