20090110 Giveaway - Kodansha International

(Japan(360)
Sat 2009/01/10 16:40
UPDATE! Sorry to the first 8 people who already answered - you get another go because I forgot to give you the link to the larger version of the photo.

More up n coming comrades n sponsors want to continue to give you goodies. Next up is the good folks at Kodansha International who want to give away a copy of Arcade Mania and Yokai Attack.

Arcade Mania contains everything you need to know about Japanese arcade games. Is written by comrade Brian Ashcraft who is well known for his articles on Kotaku, Wired and a load of other publications. Comrade Jean Snow also helped out with this book.

Hmmm. Seeing this Mahjong games makes me want to get that ef Tale of Memories Mahjong set. Any Mahjong players here?
And get a load of these crazy bullets. May consider playing if the bullet count was reduced by 90%. Arcade Mania is available from Amazon
Yokai Attack is a book that contains everything you need to know about Japanese Monsters. Those studying Japanese who have come across monsters like the Kappa can find more about it and its fellow fiends in this book. Had always wondered about that fiery wheel with a head on it that was in Gegege no Kitaro - is covered in the book. The book is written by another comrade Matt Alt. Seeing people around me has got me thinking whether I should write a book too but not sure what it would be about. Some folks suggested motivational and some have suggested Japan guides.
Yokai Attack is available from Amazon.
Now for folks who want one - all you have to do is tell me how many Sabers you can see in this photo.
Rules -Only one try -Only members who have been registered for more than a month who regularly participate in the community can play -Deadline is this time tomorrow -Folks who get the answer correct go to the next round -The winner gets to choose which book, second place gets the remainder -Answer more than once and you are out -You may want to look at the original sized photo to look for all Sabers -Arms installation is complete - good luck

He didn't author the book, maybe he can ask the authors to sign it? It'll make more sense for Danny to autograph the books when he writes his Motivational(?) or Japan Guide.

NEET!!!
I forgot my password to my old account and had to make a new one. I think I registered with my old hotmail account and i completely forgot my hotmail address so I ended up making a new profile!!

1 -one on the top shelf in the back
2&3 -saber written on the board twice
4&5 -saber lily and saber holdin the pengu on the edge.
6 -saber lion!!
7 -and the saber dolfie!

So I spy 7, unless you actually count her sword as a 'saber' then 9. I can't tell if the one on the back shelf is holding a sword ... 10 if she is :)

btw I don't want prize, but doubt I'm gonna win anyway.

the 2 books are pretty interesting. Think I have browsed them both already some time back. The 1 about the video games was quite comprehensive and covered a whole range of games from a long time back from multiple platforms. They covered the usual classics, the groundbreaking works and also the interesting stuff. Spent like an hour in my bookstore just reading through it.

the 1 about the yokai is pretty interesting as well. a whole list of 'monsters' and other stuff from comics and folktales. mostly tongue-in-cheek stuff. The one about the wet bathroom monster was pretty hilarious though

Hmm this should come out quite interestnig, because you seewhat danny wrote was " all you have to do is tell me how many Sabers you can see in this photo."

he said Sabers-"Sabers" with a capitasl "S"

So if you sowanything written down and it wasn`t with a capital "S" - i reccon it shouldn`t count.

The name of the character form Fate Stay Night is "Saber" [ not going to spoil, so don`t correct me], and having that in mind wherever you see a form, resembling "Saber-the character"-you shoul count it ^^.

Also if there is a poster, which I don`t see, and the name "Saber" was whitten with capital letters - I think it shouldn`d count^^

a "saber" - the sword is not whitten with a capital letter unless it`s the first word in a sentance-so it shouldn`t count^^

also having in mind that Danny said that we should tell him how many sabers we see - he never said wahat exactly did he mean by that - beuse if he ment tha character - all of you which selected the more because you counted those on the board made the wrong decision^^

But then again if danny had specified it would have been so much simpler^^

so my bottom line is - In my oppinion if you see an image or an illustranion/any form of "Art"- resembling the character from fate staynight - you should probably count that one too^^

not too sure about my thoughts so don`t take them too seriously-I don`t want to be the reason for you not to win the book^^;

So does the head swap of Fate and Saber Lily count or no? Saber technically still qualifies if she has Fate's body, but what about the other way around?

That`s why I said that the outcome should be verry interesting :)

But technically the way that Danny used the word "Saber" it may [may not] stand for a lot of other things, not having in mind the most popular one - the character from Faith Stay Night

So basicly the end result depends on how Danny sees the meaning of the word "Saber" ^^ so I don`t think that anybody can give the correct answer knowing only that ^^, they can guess - but can never know for sure ^^;

the sword that saber holds (and most swords dipicted in animes) are usually not sabers. Saber holds a two-handed sword, while sabers are suppose to be one-handers with a "C" shaped guard around the handle and hilt of the sword (to protect your fingers during deflections), that's the true form of a saber, anything that doesn't look like that, they've got a different term for it like rapier, claymore, blade, and what-have-you-nots.

If I can I would like to change my guess to 13 Saber's.

I'm probably blind but I only see 8. (assuming the Fate's head on Saber Lily's body doesn't count). But why do I keep getting the feeling that the Hetare Saber that the Bikini Saber comes with is hiding somewhere...

Technically I don't think Saber actually use sabers...Caliburn/Excalibur are more like claymores than anything else.

Yay! I already have a copy of yokai attack, unfortunately, for most of the yokai the countermeasures are lacking, or they aren't very good. Mostly "you're doomed if you meet one", or something. I only read up to Mukou Ren (Jigoku Shoujo, I didn't even know he was a yokai). Good stuff, but it costs more than it's worth, imho.

Don't get what he meant by "Sabers" after reading everyone's post.
Yokai attack seems interesting, but the question is also very confusing. Which do we really count? Think the method Danny chose will eliminate a lot of people from round 2.

I want to guess differently from everyone so here is my thought:
1. If he means "Saber" as the "Saber" in the "Saber's original armor" then there's 2 I think, the one in the far left top corner and the dollfie saber.
2. 1 "Saber Lion, 1 Fate Barrier Jacket cosplay saber, and 1 bikini saber(forgot what she was).
3. So does saber lion+other forms of saber count?
4. the written word saber? will it count?
5. or does danny mean saber as in swords, blades, or what you want to call em.
6. "Saber" as the Saber in Fate/Stay night is still one person regardless of many forms she may take, so does that mean there is only one "Saber"
Sorry to the people who I may have been confused with my ramblings, blame the critical thinking skills that colleges require for their students to have.

Well Danny probably means as many saber regardless of forms as long as they are the Saber character from fate/stay night and using other methods to kick out a lot of contestants from the next round.

For my guess there are 2 Saber counting only the ones with her original armor and clothing.
