Photo taken when I was in Shanghai. All my life I thought that the Bee Cheng Hiang [美珍香] brand of dried meat was from Hong Kong - discovered that it was founded in Singapore when I actually looked at the packaging of the 5 kilos that I brought back to Japan. Tis one of my fave foods and was a great surprise when member Windbell brought me some when I met up with him on his last trip to Japan. Cant get it in Japan and I start to get depressed when I'm down to the last piece - I chew it slowly ^^; Do give it a try if you have the chance.
lol didnt know bee cheng hiang actually went to shanghai, only saw it in beijing before
omg this is my fav. prefer the pork (bak kua) version - dont really fancy the chicken one. eat tons of these especially near CNY..always eat until sick...but its damn good. everyone must try it
Chinese New Year is coming ^^
gives me an idea. lets open up a shop in japan. do you think it will receive good response there?
Chinese New Year is near! 'yuhk gon' are selling like hot cake! But cant last long though...
This just reminded me of Chinese New Year! Hey Danny, any Hong Baos to give away? LOL
Yeah, hopefully he'll put figures into his Hong Baos instead of money. xD
i miss those so much. sadly they don't sell it here and i have no means of getting them. the jerky they sell here is really expensive and taste like rubber sometimes.
really? guess i'm pretty lucky to live near singapore eh ^^(i live in indonesia, a MUCH more bigger country but filled by stupid corrupt politician that destroy this country) seriously, is it really taste like rubber?
I loved eating those when I went to Hong Kong, sadly they don't sell it here. Not even in Chinatown lol, wish they did then I would pick it up whenever I passed by.
Luv this style of jerky. Luckily, I don't have to go as for as asia to get it. Over in Vancouver (hour flight away from me), they have a place called Bee Kim Heng which is renowned for its jerky. It's made on-site, and probably the best in all of Canada (can any Vancouverites back me up on this?) We always get tonnes when there even if it's $18/lbs. So when I go to Asia this spring, I'll give this place a try. Let you know which I think is better. If Vancouver turns out FTW (which is likely probable with the tastiness of Canadian beef), won't you all be just so curious (esp. Danny) about this little piece of heaven in a polythene bag.
@FatB gah, i hate living on the east coast now, we get nothing here, though i'm sure if i looked hard enough i can probably find a place in toronto. there's just nothing here in london, which really sucks
they open it to in indonesia, guess japan don't like jerkey, much are they? o, yeah, bee cheng hiang have a great commercial too, on that movie, i'm not stupid or something
Chnese new year.... Visit relatives.... Ba gua at hand.... Hong paos to be recieved.... Repeat....
not forgetting.. ba gua for speeding ba gua for obstructing traffic while visiting your relatives ba gua for letting off fire crackers ba gua for playing mahjong illegally ba gua for throwing ba gua at the police station
ba gua!! definately will miss it this year T__T
5kg...thats quite a lot
Chinese New Year to me only means more money and more ba gua!!
This news reminds me that I, as a Chinese, have never properly celebrated Chinese New Year. No hong bao, no ba gua, no visiting relatives (except visiting my grandfather for once and once only, and that was when I was in elementary school, oh, yeah, I received my first and last hong bao that time ^^). I'm guessing this is one of the results of Soeharto's ban on Chinese culture in Indonesia, isn't it? >_< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Chinese#Discrimination
guess, not i still got my hong bao, i'm chinese indonesian here. not to mention your misery, takeyo-san, u did mention on living in ausie, so maybe u miss those hong bao. what i heard is, u still recieve hong bao until u are married, or ,well. work as for visiting..., lucky to me that my house is visited ^^, so no worry on missing hong bao =)
@Hendrik, About living in Aussie, that was just 8 months, it was just a short stay >_< After my foundation year ended I left Aussie almost immediately ^^
@_@, guess my family survive the soeharto hong bao retaliation eh, i got 1st hong bao at 5 Y ol. phacken soeharto just don't die... DIE MOFO!
this is not funny stuff... but the ex-president of my country(soeharto) died the next day i post this post.... anybody wanna told me that i don't have shinigami pow'ah?^^ oh, BTW, he's on crisis this week (the guy is 86 y old when he died), so maybe just coincidence...
Oh Soeharto's died already? That's good news, I guess, now polices may start arresting Soeharto's sons and daughters for whatever crimes they've made. ^^
hendrik, go put random names in your Death Note, it doesn't scare me at all. ^^; (pwned) But more seriously, I'd never have thought it'd get that level of popularity (in both good and bad ways)... A bit like ouija boards.
Do you have a Death note?! I won't be telling you my real name then... By George W. Bush
Plenty of these barberqued pork shops in Singapore, but to find one that is truly awesomely delicious and yummy texture-wise is pretty difficult. But seeing it's also pretty expensive especially around our Chinese New Year, it isn't easy to go around buying from different shops ^^; A coupla of times I came across excellent ones, but I think I forgot where to get them orz
hendrik, should be time to reveal you got a Death Note.
Oops, wrong comment to reply to. Sorry.
@D_BLADE what's your real world name? ^^ tell me or i will do random ppl killing with my death note http://denhurd.files.wordpress.com/2007/03/my-death-note-book.jpg nah, i'm not into death note, read the manga, but not watch the anime neither do i have commercial death note
This made me hungry. Will definately try this when I visit China
*Definitely
Haha didn't know you liked this. Theres a even more awesome shop with super bbq pork called Lim Chee Guan. During the Chinese New Year, they have queues for at least 3 hours. Well if you ever drop by Singapore, I'd treat ya to their "bak kwa" (thats what we call it).
my big brother would like this, u have the address? and, thanks
I just walked past d Lim Chee Guan store yesterday but the queue hasn't started getting crazy yet ;) Hendrik: I don't have the address but it's located in people's park complex(chinatown), right behind the bus stop.
Dried meat is so addictive... I remember eating that with my father some years ago. I guess he still loves it, but I gave up on it because it's quite greasy. I wouldn't touch a bit otherwise I would eat the whole package at once. Anyone tried bits of dried meat with rice? It's superb, especially since the rice absorbs the fat, adds consistency and more flavor! ^^
danny, since we are on the topic of bakkua and chinese new year, will you be celebrating this coming chinese new year?
Dont usually do anything special. A bit like Christmas - just eat good food ^^;
@Danny, Sounds like a celebration to me.
There's a store in New York city. It's kind of expensive so I rarely ever buy it.
BA GUA!
this is good stuff, but some outlets have different cooking taste, some may come hard or some soft.
hmmmm looks yummy :p i'll try it sometime
i always eat it on chinese new year... it's hard to find at other times.
Approximately = BBQed sweetened jerky for those who are unaquainted with such thingies. I m not a fan of it, prefer pineapple tarts among the CNY goodies.
Bee Cheng Hiang sucks anyway They have better quality brands in Singapore.. Oh and the prices for these 'bak kwa' during Chinese Lunar New Year are seriously over-inflated Crappy world economy...
wa ... bak kua is great stuff ... we got many brands here in singapore :D Bee cheng hiang is just one of them
i miss eating Bee Cheng Hiang. the last time that i've ate one was when i visited HK and that was a long time ago lulz XD
If you don't mind meeting up, I'll gladly bring some for you when I go to Japan this May, Danny.
i like to eat the dried meat also.
Bak gua eh? I enjoy eating those but for CNY, I prefer pineapple tarts more!!!!
My fav product from Bee Cheng Hiang is the "Gourmet Bak Kua", it's the bak kua's version of bacon. You can see it in Danny's pic, right where the man is standing
Sorry for d double post. Danny: did you get the vacumm packed version or those fresh off the grill? I always thought that Japanese airport staff will seize all fresh food products
I also bought some of that during my last trip to Hong Kong. Brought it back home for the whole family to enjoy. I bought the beef variant of course. I'll take beef over pork anytime.
Beef version is the best. So easy to chew on, light and so tasty at the same time.
Hi Danny, I'm coming to Tokyo in March if you want any BCH bak kua. :-) Cheers Beanoo
Yesterday I saw the price was already S$35 per kg? And CNY is still 2 weeks away! considering dialy price increase, I foresee about S$50 by CNY. So Singaporeans, do your ba kwa shopping early this yr!
how about not buying?
Actually it makes sense. why bother to burn your wallet out when you have access to bee cheng hiang shops all year round?
Haha, yeah.. we have access to these stores (quite a number) all year round.. Lucky us ^^ Too bad m family doesn't buy it all year round though ^^;
for goodness' sake this year new year goodies' prices are all going up, including the 'bak kwa'!! >.< I didnt know there's Bee Cheng Hiang in Hong Kong o.O
IN singapore there's a even better dried meat near china square centre,it's as small shop run by an old man and his son, the original is better ( for me) than bee cheng hiang. But BCH have lot more varieties though, especially love their bacon&cheese one
I love that stuff. But it's not exactly a heath food so I usuall y tie myself to my bed frame after a few pieces.... ToT
This is one of my favorites. Its has been a must for me to eat these during Chinese New Year. Or I will few really empty.
Gong Xi Fa Cai~ Hong Bao Na Lai! hahah I am not a Cantonese although i live in Guangzhou i know a very limited cantonese... so can anybody tell me what does "Ba Gua" or "bak kwa" mean? "八卦?" i don't think so... I know "Hong Bao" means "红包" though..
Ba Gua or Bakkwa is the equivalent of the mandarin Rou Gan (dried meat). dunno if i got it right, i suck at pingying
That's because Bak Kwa is the pronunciation of 肉干 in Hokkien ( 福建话), Cantonese should call "Yok Gon"
I've been eating this thing since I was a kid. I knew about its origin when I went to singapore about 4 years ago. Saw a shop there full of these. Tried hording so much when I was about to come back home. XD Love this stuff. Haven't had one for quite some time now though. ^^
yoz danny, next time if you come to singapore, i take you around and have more delicious food like tis ! Happy New Year Everyone !
I like how they wear those face masks. I wish they did that in the USA.
sounds good ^_^ yummy i want to try it now...*stomach grumbles* crap.....
