Kannagi Ceases Publication

(Otaku(155)

Many folks are speculating that the publication of Kannagi has ceased until further notice (no mention of it being ceased indefinitely) is due to the sad otaku voicing and showing their disapproval of Nagi sama not being as pure as they hoped by ripping up their manga and what have you.

I've seen many cases where one person decides to give up what they are doing due to pressure from haters which can also lead to stress and illness.

I've had this a lot in the past and still do. I have haters who want me to stop blogging, stop trooping and stop breathing too.
If they think their continuous bashing is going to affect me in anyway then they are highly mistaken - because we know who they are.

I also read how Internet Idol Mimi nearly stopped blogging due to haters.
Have you stopped doing something due to pressure from haters? If you have then rethink who you are living your life for. You live for the ones you care about and for yourself - not for people who hate you.

More Kannagi news at ANN.

UPDATE: But wait - I've seen many comments/blog posts of how people grow to hate anime characters - in particular that girl (forgot her name - the one with glasses from Geass) and Spinzaku.
Some characters are designed to be annoying but no need to hate them.

Original text from Lelouch Lamperouge below.
In a shocking an unexpected development, crazy shrine maiden manga Kannagei has ceased publication indefinitely. Fingers have instantly been pointed at the recent extreme actions of otaku “fans”. The announcement, carried in the latest issue of ComicREX (where Kannagi is serialised), states that the health of mangaka 武梨えり/ Eri Takenashi is unsound, and so publication is to be suspended with immediate effect. The magazine begs the forbearance of fans in awaiting further developments, but gives no timeframe for a resumption of publication, and gives no further information on what prompted the suspension. Complete details from our friend in Sankaku Complex For me it's a huge what in the world reaction. Given the popularity and the hype done to the said series. It's a huge question mark on me regarding the fact about the sudden announcement of it.

The otaku that freak out because she may not be a virgin are morons and Hippocrates. the same guys who ripped their kannagi manga and are mad because their favorite anime character may or may not be a virgin, are going to comiket to buy kannagi adult doujinshi and whack off to.

I've never read Kannagi before, but I have heard a lot about it online.

There have been times when I didn't like what my favorite characters did or didn't do. When Motoko from Love Hina cut her hair in the manga, I was pretty freaked out and couldn't look at her the same way. I loved her long hair and it was integral to her character, but I kept on reading and you know what happened? Her hair grows back. Sure, it's not as long as it was before, but she looked so much better.

Of course, you can't grow your virginity back like you can hair. However, not being a virgin might give Nagi some room to expand as a character. Did the guys who spank it to her ever think of that?!

The only time I would get mad at an anime or a manga series is if it didn't finish. I still wouldn't riot, but I would write about it, either in my blog (emo, I know) or in a letter to the company if I really cared for the series.

Plus, given that she's a fictional character, being a virgin or not is pointless. If a fan wants the character to be a virgin, start writing a doujin about how pure she really is, yadda, yadda, yadda...and make that the core belief of their own little world...

I lol-ed. Personally, I don't think virginity is something that's 'so' important. For the very least, it doesn't play that much of a role in an anime. More so considering the fact that having sex is something between two person and not the rest of the world.

But the otaku that approve of this don't think it makes them looks bad, and the otaku that think this makes them look bad didn't support this backslash, it is simply a case of not all otaku being the same, like you, know, people.

It is rumored that it was a 2ch guy cause this to happen juz because Nagi has Ex-boyfriend and might not be a Virgin anymore. What wrong with this guy anyway? Juz because Nagi might not be a Virgin does not mean he can attack the creator, wth....its juz storys & drawings to entertain people for heaven's sake.

You can check more details on this at sankakucomplex.com. If I'm not mistaken, the latest chapter caused the overobssessed fans to overreact to the point of attacking the series, hating it, ripping their Kannagi products. Its just sickening to see that the otaku in Japan have the capability of putting a lid on creativity. I was pretty pissed when Double Arts & Mx0 stopped since it was not "popular".

It has not been proven that the illness has been caused by those few stupid emo kids. If the mangaka is a professional he shouldn't take such an act of stupid nerd rage seriously.

True that he shouldn't take it seriously. But I'm thinking that the mangaka himself might be stressed by other parties. I think sales and commercial pressure might be a factor but you're right, its still a form of speculation.

There's no doubt that orange clad ninja has its flaws (heck, most people know better than to wear bright colors and stand out) but unfortunately, majority of anime/manga customers are Japanese. It really sucks when mangaka have to live up to "The customer is always right" philosophy.

I always thought the phrase "the costumer is always right" as bull. There are times they are right, and times they aren't we're all human after all (doesn't mean costumers deserve crappy service).

I think it makes even less sense with anime; if all costumers are catered with just mere fan service there wouldn't be any creativity since mangakas would always just "play it safe".

I hope this hardcore otakus are but a minority, because Kannagi is a great show despite fan service and whatnot.

"The customer is always right" is just a slogan from a London department store that somehow took off, when in fact it was just a slogan to make the customer feel like they're important to their business. I always have to deal with this BS term when I'm at work because they're all b**ching about lies they've concocted to get refund/discount/credit/etc.

The term "The customer always assumes it's right" is more appropriate.

http://positivesharing.com/2006/07/why-the-customer-is-always-right-results-in-bad-customer-service/

Anyhoot... enough of my rant. And you're right, by "playing it safe" mangaka are limited to what their creativity could've taken them. It's good to take people's opinions into account, but it's still their original creation and should go where they want it to go.

I was mind boggling how otaku reacted to the fact Nagi has a boyfriend (never mind if sex was implied or not). Now even anime girls can't be a little more experienced?

Thanks for the link, it's an awesome read (especially after a crappy day with crappy costumers).

Regardless of the fact what exactly caused the illness of the mangaka, I find the whole “Nagi is a slut” outrage and reactions by those so called 'fans' mind boggling.

First of all the fact that those otaku assume that Nagi having had a boyfriend or relationship equals her having had sex is quite the fallacious reasoning.

Second, she's supposedly a centuries old goddess. Is it not likely for her to have previously been in love, been involved with a human? Jin being the first one would be more odd since the guy's nothing special.

Third, what is it with otaku/2channers that for them a character must be a virgin because a virgin wouldn't "betray" them? That's yet another incredibly fallacious conclusion. A virgin may very well betray or cheat on you and someone who had a prior relationship may be faithful to you, there's no correlation. And are otaku that concerned with a potential partner betraying them? Have they been betrayed before then? Or is their interest in multiple different 2D (and/or 3D) characters subconsciously making them realize that if they give themselves the right to look upon different girls like that, a girl may do the same?

Also, they want Nagi to be a virgin because they desire her and want to be with her? Besides the obvious issues of her being a fictional character, how twisted isn't this since Nagi is not only suggested to be in love with another character (Jin) in the story (and hence taken) but all those other otaku also lust for her.

The very lack of any logical reasoning and abundance of ridiculous thinking in the "Nagi is a slut" thing I find extremely unsettling. Because just imagine what an absolute and utter idiot totally detached from reality and reason you have to be to even be able to think such an idiocy.

If the author/mangaka in this case quits the manga because she is outraged and shocked at the reaction by some fans, then I think those fans deserve what they get, no more manga. And I think anime and manga fans as a community should check themselves and try and take a look at what some of the people in that community have become.

"Nagi is not only suggested to be in love with another character (Jin) in the story (and hence taken)"

I'm just going to note how I think that works. As the protagonist we know, we identify with Jin and see him as either ourselves (thus making Nagi in love with us, the reader) or as a close friend whose life we're privy to (and thus someone we envy, but not hate). The "previous guy" though, is someone we don't really know nor care about and is thus an outsider and an intrusion.

If I were to guess, I'd say that this time of mentality is especially true for Japanese and many other Asian cultures, which place heavy emphasis on "IN" and "OUT" groups; "us" and "them", groups we belong to and not, significant ones being immediate family, relatives, company, etc.

Indeed, this could very well be, but then those people who see or feel it to the extreme that they not only identify with Jin but want to be Jin (or take Jin's place) would perhaps be best served to realize that there's an entire legion of other people out there who want the same.
The Nagi they dream to be with because she's a pure virgin is lusted for by so many others and has been 'defiled' in plenty of doujinshi and other otaku's thoughts. One has to reckon that their desire for Nagi is already rooted in an unhealthy obsession that has them detached from reality. If you continue on that line of thought you could conclude that all those otaku that think and live by the principle that their dreams and lust for a fictional character like Nagi are some sort of reality well then in fact it is their desire and dreams of Nagi that make her a slut, because if their dreams were real, thousands of people would be with Nagi (at the same time).

My concern and ire -sorry for that negative element of ire- is simply how such illogical and misplaced thinking by so called 'fans' ruins what should be enjoyable entertainment for all of us.

If a story or character moves in a direction I don't like then I may very well be disappointed, saddened, stop watching the anime, stop reading the manga and possibly stop being a fan if I dislike the direction it takes that much.
But such extreme reactions as these? These clearly show those people have serious issues they should deal with first.

No one here can understand the despair of sudden boyfriend.. Yes, maybe the reaction was bit of hardcore but thats why japs are so awesome. If the reaction would have been something like "Lame..." and not the rage like this there would have been no consequences, but now that the japs raged and literally pwned their tankoubons we got this, and hopefully the mangaka gets better and in next chapter comes a spoiler "NAGI IS A VIRGIN YEEEY! She really hates the guy she loved etc.".

And quoting Smithy "If the author/mangaka in this case quits the manga because she is outraged and shocked at the reaction by some fans, then I think those fans deserve what they get, no more manga." Heh I think the fans who got into this dont really care have you seen the pics of shredded/burnt or some other way abused Kannagi tankoubons? Yeah, those pics are priceless.

Well long story short, I really hope the mangaka gets better and continues with Kannagi or starts another manga.

I dont know man I don't see how this reaction makes japanese cool or otaku cool at all if anything it just makes them seem pathetic, reactions are one thing but this is completely off base.

Cmon a friggen fictional character man, and wtf you feel betrayed by a drawing? That just means you better go to the local bar and find yourself a good lay cause damn man if you are thinking in that form, you sure do need to get laid.

And I hope the Mangaka does not give in to their stupidity and writes in the next issue yeah shes not a virgin in fact she banged mad guys. She/he shouldn't give into the demands of some few idiots.

I think that since Kannagi is now pretty popular, after the otaku rage they are thinking about the future approach of the manga in order to satisfy the fans. Not only for the sales of the DVDs, but also because Kannagi is the most known series of the rather low tier Ichijinsha editorial.

Is kinda sad, since I'm following the manga way before the anime was announced, and by the popularity given by the anime, the course of the manga may be modified...

Seriously the first thing that needs to be addressed is that the manga-ka gets well, I certainly hope she recovers quickly so that this series can continue. If it really is true however that Otaku in Japan have effectively stopped Kannagi's publication...well...it's a shame that such a great product was stopped due to over zealous fans. A real shame...

News that Kannagi was ceasing publication last night was certainly a surprise, considering the apparent popularity of the show.

I wouldn't know about calling it "highly likely" that it was due to the author feeling under the weather due to internet commentary, but it may perhaps be true.

that character with glasses is probably Nina.
Given the fact that she made FLEIA and the way she hated Zero in the said series. People started to hate her. Especially when Nunnally was killed by FLEIA only to be a joke of Sunrise when Nunnally shows up later in the show. Suzaku on the other hand, turned from a hated character to a respected one when Code Geass ended.

That's how i viewed it! Suzaku was annoying to me until the last few episodes when they teamed up. Nina on the other hand bugged me consistently throughout the series. Being so afraid of the "11s" was just ridiculous...grrr.

Suzaku became one of my favorites, after Lelouch of course ^_^

I would like to take this moment to say that stories are meant to be read. Not read and whine that so and so was suppose to be this or do that, you can keep those thoughts to yourself. Not go and tell everyone not to buy it just because it did not meet up to your expectations. And seriously if you don't like the story anymore don't buy it. No one is physically or mentally forcing you to continue buying their products.

True but she stated she's never had any real interest in any of them. Plus her age, level of maturity, eccentricity, and general attitude towards men is highly indicative that she wouldn't resort to anything past a kiss or even holding hands romantically.

(Spoiler)
I believe her first kiss was with Kyon...of course, she's a goddess so erasing that wouldn't be hard.

You can be safe in the knowledge of one thing with haters that they must have no life to live of there own if they can spend all there time trying to spread there jelouse hate, the best thing to do is to not aknowledge them at all i.e. if they send hate mail automatically mark it as spam, if they write offensive message on sites about you etc just completly ignore them and in the end your the one laughing at them as they waste there time as your living the life the way you want despite what the jelouse haters think.

I've stopped pursuing dreams because of shattered confidence, to the point where I'm quite lost. I can understand why someone would stop doing something because of haters, I really can. But more so than haters what I think is more depressing is when you don't have supporters. I wish I could improve my communication skills as it opens new doors all the time.

Just to make things clear, the OFFICIAL reason is due to author's illness.

Just forget about speculation. Shure it CAN be due to some extreme otaku hating, trolling and complaining... but the fact is that WE DON'T KNOW FOR SHURE.

So, to avoid even more speculation, attacks, and anger, it's better to make things clear.

I didn't start watching Kannagi yet, but I will when I have the time.
I love the character designs (Nagi is awesome), and I think the otaku hatred is limited to just a few fanatics.

It's the dark side of Internet... people think that anonymity means they can do anything they want, and thus, things like these happens unfortunately.

About Mimi... is that why there are no more Mimi posts?
Yep, I thought it could be something like that...

Anyways, I know how she feels.
I mean, I'm not cute like her, and I didn't really get stalked or pursued by internet trolls or anything like that...

But I came close to having something like that.
I'm currently moderating a big community from my hometown, and I had some people even calling my cellphone due to fights about politics in the community.

And I never publish personal info online, but unfortunately, some very dumb friends of mine thought it wasn't harmful to give my personal cellphone number to people I don't know.

Imagine that. It's bad enough that we have to be very very careful about our own personal info on the web, but now I also have to be worried for what my friends might reveal about me.

I avoid at all costs being paranoid, because paranoia can destroy people's life and cause worse things... but well, we have to be prepared for some stuff.

Because such is the world we live in, unfortunately.

Internet can make wonders... it has changed my life, and I think it has potetion for marvelous things yet to be revealed... but in the same manner, it can bring out the worst side of some people too.
Some people think that they can do everything they want on the Internet, some people don't think of the consequences of things they do on the Internet... this is a culture that HAS to change.

But you know... the human kind is far more uncivilized, dumb and ignorant than it realizes. It'll take sometime for a true Internet ettiquete, culture and education to evolve.

Never hated one character. The farthest I got was to being indifferent or slight anoyed with some. I prefer to spend my time enjoying new series than using it to hate charcaters or series. Hate is something we should avoid as it only harms the one who hates. And we already have plenty of reasons in real life to hate so I don't want to add anything more.

I believe that hate (or like how one my friends put it, elevated feelings of dislike ^^;) is merely our reaction to something (or someone) that causes us pain.
If only more people could understand why the pain exists in them in the first place, there would be less hate in the world.

Guess I'll post again after Danny bumped it. The amount of hate shouldn't really surprise us, considering the level of obsession some fans have over Kannagi - looking for three-pixel panty flashes ( http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/12/01/blatant-nagi-panchira/ ), comparing Nagi's lips in different TV broadcasts ( http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/12/02/the-lips-of-nagi-sam-%e2%80%93-kannagi-quality-analysis/ ), even drawing up an accurate building plan for the house in the show ( http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2008/12/05/so-you-want-to-live-with-nagi/ ). No, it doesn't make it any less senseless, but it does tell you of just how much obsessed fans are capable of.

Hate is a complete waste of energy, but this realization is, unfortunately, something that comes late for most and never for some.

About anime characters: there really are some characters that are meant to be hated. It's one of the most basic ways to create conflict and help you identify with the protagonist. If Nina and Suzaku weren't hated as much, would you like Lelouch and his using his friends as pawns? Whenever I find myself despising a character, I remind myself that that's exactly the point - and this hate isn't something I should be taking out of the virtual, anime world. All this is only if there's a real basis though. Nina is irrational and judgemental, Suzaku had his own way of justice. Nagi on the other hand was once in love. I suppose that's a bit too realistic and similar to real world women for some people.

Regarding Mimi: to tell the truth, I've been worried because I haven't seen her around as often any more. I thought I saw her under a different alias once, but it could just be my eye playing tricks on me that time.

Actually is not that surprising, anime, and all of fiction, is created to produce emotions in the audience. What amazes me is that they refuse to accept the result.

Engaging in fiction means signing up into an emotional roller coaster, if you can't take it it's your fault, just step down the rails, disengage from the dream world, forget about the work of fiction.

Its exaggerating, given the hordes of people that hated evangelion, pokemon, and suzumiya haruhi, its not understandable that a full grown mangaka would stop a succesful series just because *some* people hate it.

The only way it makes sense is if the numbers of haters is larger than the number of fans in which case then it is possible that the series is in fact, well, bad.

Hyped does not mean good and frequently means bad.

Until reading this manga (or rather renting the anime) I can't tell for sure which is the case.

So if a person of your country/gender/race/family did something wrong you'll detach renounce of that group? You could say that otaku is by definition a bad person but there are several definitions of otaku in use and no, I don't care what definition you declare "official" there are several in use and you have to adapt to context.

How ever the reason I dislike -people who insist they are not otaku- is because they insist they are normal, when I don't think there is such a thing as a normal person, everyone has quirks, some certainly more than others but most people won't admit their queerness, not even to themselves. People who pride themselves in being otaku/geek/nerd are free to embrace their differences and are at the same time more capable of understanding the peculiarities of other people.

I don't really have any characters I hate, it's either I like, respect, or just don't like; people change, views change. Though the fans thrashing all that Nagi merchandise is a tad overboard.

About Danny mentioning hating anime characters and mentioning “Code Geass”. One of the things I loved about “Code Geass” -so mind you it's my own personal opinion- is how it was written and its plot developed in this aspect. If you let yourself be immersed in the story you would most likely be swept to one side, either supporting Lelouch or supporting Suzaku

I would not say I really hated any character in the series but rather I enjoyed and liked how some characters were brought on screen that it sparked my viewing experience to despise them, oppose them or support them from within the series' premise. Which to me is a sign of a good, enjoyable series, because that means it was able to sweep me away in its story.
Being carried away while watching the series like that I see as a positive element that you're really enjoying it as entertainment and I would not go as far as to really develop hatred and take it with me outside of the series fictional premise.

“Code Geass” in that awed me and was such an enjoyable show since I was pulled to Lelouch's side and found myself opposing Suzaku's actions (while I still agreed with some of his views) and really enjoyed how they were played out against each other and how they both evolved as characters and their interaction with each other changed towards the end of the story.

It could be possible the reaction of fans affected the mangaka's desire and commitment. While of course pure speculation do not forget the mangaka is an artist and to many artists, the public reaction to their work (and positive support of it) is important and can make it worthwhile. When faced with such extreme reactions from fans, it is possible they could be affected by them.

About hate and haters in real life matters. What I find most disturbing in my own life lately is that I've been having quite negative emotions because I'm faced with some situations and people where I feel I'm being taken advantage of and all my hard work and commitment is for naught due to a combination of some people's mentality of sloth, taking advantage (of me) or plain negative attitude.
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and the weak links in the chain of work alas make all my efforts and commitment as a strong link go down the drain.

I'm not sure how I can deal with this to turn it around and generate strength from it and I fear those people's actions are grinding down on me that much I'm becoming more spiteful and negative, something which I do not want. I would fear becoming a hater because I may driven to it by them.

Oh darn! I actually liked the manga and now it's suspended? Why have the Gods forsaken me?! DX

It must be hard for the mangaka. I hope she recovers from this illness of hers and continue publishing the manga. It would be a waste if she didn't continue it, especially if the reason why she stopped was because of these haters x_x

Nooooo... Nagi-sama!!! This is so sad. I really hope Kannagi comes back.

I always believe in standing by what you believe in. I have a postcard that has this, with a mountain as the background: "If you can't get through the mountain, try going around it. If you can't go around it, try going over it. If you can go over it, ask yourself if getting over to the other side is all that important. If it is, set your heart out to dig a tunnel through it." Wise words indeed.

They should be glad that the author didn't threw a hissy fit and decides to reveal that Nagi is a non-virgin, transexual trap (does that term means a girl who turned into a guy and still looks like a girl? ZOMFG) in the next volume.

Hating a fictitious character is fine. Hey, at least no one in real life (other than fanboys of the said character) will ever be mentally tortured for that. However, the Kannagi fiasco was extremely... too far, overblown, and really, the worse drama I've ever seen in my whole life.

A person who draws things.
I wouldn't say I truly hate some anime characters. Like Suzaku, it was really just fun to make fun of him. But I would only do this with a fictional character, never to real people. I think maybe that's one of the reasons that makes anime good, they make characters for you to dislike so, you don't end up hating anyone in real life. It actually gives you something to talk about with fellow fans too.

I haven't read the Kannagi manga yet and I'm only at about episode 5 of the anime. But I really like it and plan on reading it. :/ I hope this whole issue is taken care of in the right way.

hate is a strong word for me.. and to hate something that doesn't exist in the first place... ultimate in stupidity.. yes i think some characters are annoying.. and hope the next bulliet is for them.. but once the show is done.. i don't ripe up the book or anything. even in real life i don't hate anybody.. though there are some people that i woudn't mind not seeing for the rest of my life.. but i don't wish them harm or bad... :)

I never truly hate any characters from any medias. (film, drama, anime, etc.)

In my country there are some forum threads about this case and people in my country and me thought that it's very stupid to hate and ban Kannagi just she has the boyfriend and .... with him maybe in my country there aren't many truly otaku. Even there are otakus in my country, their characeristic is only 1/10 of the Japanese otaku.

Many female reader also feel sorry for the mangaka. (Is the mangaka is female ? We thought she is. If it's not, sorry!) And blamed the male Otakus what they do is just bully her and they're not gentleman.

I still continue watching reading and support Kannagi and hope the mangaka can overcome this hardship and continue drawing again.

It really sux when things like this happen. I'll admit I hated a couple times when some stuff in my fave anime didn't go as I wanted but almost always when that happens the anime ends up good. I've looked at it as part of the "movie" (anime watching?) experience.

as for the haters...I've had my share of haters in my lifetime (both online and irl), it almost never fails me when I tell them that they hate me because they love me. lol. either that or i just ignore them. Really, its just a waste of your time and energy to respond to them. One thing to remember you can't please everyone :D

I'm all for organizing a couple of flowers and get well presents for her.

Not because I'm particularly a fan of the manga, but because I think the mangaka could really need the encouragement after all the fanbase hate.

After all, what keeps people working on stuff certainly ain't the haters.

Ceasing publication is just letting those delusional fans win. And this will let them win in future engagements. Thinking in a political sense, precedent is precedent and it's tough to get that momentum to stop. I hope they reverse their decision and continue on regardless of any fan reactions like what just happened.

This made me reflect on how my feelings of dislike or hate towards characters grew much stronger when I started watching anime. I'm not sure why. But I have never done hater-type things, and am actually getting better at not wasting energy on it. I'd rather laugh about it. I actually always liked both Nina and Spinzaku, though -- and completely understand characters designed as villains or designed to disappoint or annoy at some point.

As for Kannagi, I sincerely wish for the mangaka's speedy recovery, whatever the reason. And I shudder to imagine the amount of pressure from the business side of things... I really hope she will be able to continue her story the way she wants to write and draw it. I haven't read it yet but am enjoying the anime very much indeed.

Hey, this is just like Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice" (sorry, poem reference). I believe that the Kannagi haters' type of hatred is "fire" - it's passionate and without reason. Fire is better than ice because ice is cold hatred with reason, which is why ice is the true epitome of hell. Most of the hatred in the world is because of passion... I hated Nina because I really wanted Lelouch to succeed. But after the season ended, when I think back to how I reacted, it was very ridiculous. xD
