Sports Anime Genre, yay or nay

(Anime(57)
Tue 2008/12/02 22:59
I am a bit of a baseball fan, and an even bigger Baseball Anime fan (it combines 2 things I love into 1!!). So I really enjoy the Major series, and most recently Ookiku Furikabutte which I recently reviewed on my blog

Now it is pretty much a generalization that otaku aren't too big on sports and because of this, it seems there is a number of otaku who don't care for sports genre anime, regardless of the fact that there are some very popular sports anime (e.g. Prince of Tennis)

So I was curious to how the DC community feels about sports anime
Are you a sports anime junkie ?
Do you only like some sports anime ?
Maybe just a specific genre of sport, such as baseball or tennis ?

Or do you absolutely loathe it, like some of my friends ?

As for me, I primarily only really care for baseball anime. However I did enjoy Prince of Tennis, it even got me interested in trying to play tennis... for like a month. I also enjoyed eyeshield 21 for a short while. Never really cared much for others though.

I don't like sports anime. I'm a girl and I don't really enjoy sports at all in real life. So for me it crosses over into anime, manga and books too.

I just can't get excited about sports XD

Hmm, I haven't really seen any sports anime but, I did enjoy these few sequences:
Clannad, basketball match
School Rumble, Basketball match / Hockey
Athletics festivals in any anime.
I enjoy watching many sports in reality so, I should probably try a sport anime soon.

Tennis has always been interesting for me though um.. yeah ^^; I could go on about this..

hrmm, that is a good question. I do believe Anidb and ANN have it tagged in sports, so if we count their ruling as the judges, than it will be accepted.

I recently finished the Suzuka manga recently too

Oh Heck Yes !! Ippo ftw (although some fights were too long imo).

Major is very good. It is able to hold an 8.5 rating on anidb, so that's a good sign that a number of people think its good, yes ?

But I dont want the sport to be the center in the anime.

A lot of Air Gear was screwed. I was massively upset that it detracted from the manga. I did like it a lot though, mostly because I'm a fanboy =D

But yea, that is another good question. Does it count as a sport. The anidb tags it sport. So I guess we shall roll with a technical yes, just like with suzuka

Can't say i care much for them. I love the NFL, NBA, NHL, and baseball. Not a rabid fan, but i love the statistics and competition involved on the professional level, but playing them casually is really fun as well. However, i don't like the sports anime. From what i've seen, it is rather unrealistic. And since the biggest appeal to me lies in the statistical aspects, it only makes sense that watching real sports would appeal more to me. I might give a hockey sports anime a try if such a thing exists..

In regards to sports-themed anime, I've only seen Eyeshield 21 and for the most part, I've enjoyed it. Though I find the terminology and phrases used throughout the series to be hilarious--of course, it could be that the subs I've watched stink.

I watch anything that's not guro and horror, so yes, I've watched my fair share of sports anime. I like it - it's a nice change from all the killing and shooting and sappy romance/fanservice every now and then.

My definition of "sports" anime is closer to "competition" anime though - with series like Initial D included. As long as the action is explained somewhat and not completely unbelievable (as opposed to: I PULL SUPERNATURAL MOVE THAT CAN SHOOT SOMETHING INTO SPACE OUT OF MY AS-) then I'm fine.

Depends more on the anime's story for me. If an anime is based around a sport, but the story focuses more on the interplay between the characters and their daily lives (e.g. Bamboo Blade, Slam Dunk, Yawara, etc.), I tend to enjoy it. If the anime is focused more on the sport itself and how the characters perform in it (e.g. Captain Tsubasa, Prince of Tennis, etc.), then I tend to grow bored with the show.

I also watch Major but thinks that the older seasons are better. Other sports animes I've watch includes Hajime no Ippo , Bamboo Blade, Hungry Hearts, Initial D, Hikaru no Go, Suzuka.
