I am a bit of a baseball fan, and an even bigger Baseball Anime fan (it combines 2 things I love into 1!!). So I really enjoy the Major series, and most recently Ookiku Furikabutte which I recently reviewed on my blog Now it is pretty much a generalization that otaku aren't too big on sports and because of this, it seems there is a number of otaku who don't care for sports genre anime, regardless of the fact that there are some very popular sports anime (e.g. Prince of Tennis) So I was curious to how the DC community feels about sports anime Are you a sports anime junkie ? Do you only like some sports anime ? Maybe just a specific genre of sport, such as baseball or tennis ? Or do you absolutely loathe it, like some of my friends ? As for me, I primarily only really care for baseball anime. However I did enjoy Prince of Tennis, it even got me interested in trying to play tennis... for like a month. I also enjoyed eyeshield 21 for a short while. Never really cared much for others though.
I don't like sports anime. I'm a girl and I don't really enjoy sports at all in real life. So for me it crosses over into anime, manga and books too. I just can't get excited about sports XD
Hmmm... I'm really not into sports anime. Probably because I don't watch sports event too XD
On a related note, I wonder if anime like Air Gear is considered as a sports anime. Also, I would like to add anime lik Yu-Gi-Oh, Crushgear and Beyblade O_o
Hmm, I haven't really seen any sports anime but, I did enjoy these few sequences: Clannad, basketball match School Rumble, Basketball match / Hockey Athletics festivals in any anime. I enjoy watching many sports in reality so, I should probably try a sport anime soon.
Clannand After Story baseball match is the win for me =D
Oh~ I still have to watch Clannad After Story D: I'm more of a basketball fan than baseball in reality but, in anime.. I quite like basball, strange enough ^^; Tennis has always been interesting for me though um.. yeah ^^; I could go on about this..
That baseball match was really something. I liked Kotomi's pre-batting-calculation the most.
The only sports anime i love = Slamdunk XD
Slam Dunk. The only sports anime I've ever watched- unless Air Gear is 'sports':/
Does Suzuka count as a sports/romance type?
hrmm, that is a good question. I do believe Anidb and ANN have it tagged in sports, so if we count their ruling as the judges, than it will be accepted. I recently finished the Suzuka manga recently too
I absolutely love the art. ^_^ And Suzuka is just too cute sometimes.
I love the art for Big Windup, but the slight yaoi element creeps me out. Slam Dunk fan here. But not of Dear Boys.
Hajime no Ippo and Slam Dunk are a couple of my favorites. I'm wondering if the Major series is any good.
Oh Heck Yes !! Ippo ftw (although some fights were too long imo). Major is very good. It is able to hold an 8.5 rating on anidb, so that's a good sign that a number of people think its good, yes ?
Not a fan of sports anime except... and I'm surprise that no one has mentioned this yet... BAMBOO BLADE!!! Best sports anime ever.
Not a fan of sports anime except... and I'm surprise that no one has mentioned this yet... BAMBOO BLADE!!! Best sports anime ever.
Shoot. Why did it post twice when I only clicked once?
Yes, Bamboo Blade is the best sports anime. And there is so many lovely girls.
As I was 12 or 13 years old I watched the kickers (Gambare! Kikkāzu) and Mila Superstar (Atakku No. 1). Nowadays,I dont watch sport animes,I like it when an Anime has a few sport Episodes ,like in FMP Fumouffu or in the melancholy of Suzumya Haruhi. But I dont want the sport to be the center in the anime.
depends in real life i hate sports XD so yea is hard for me to watch an anime around sports but some times is cool Captain Tsubasa was good also Suzuka but that it
Is Air Gear a sport anime? 'Cos it's my one of my fav, even though the ending got screwed.
A lot of Air Gear was screwed. I was massively upset that it detracted from the manga. I did like it a lot though, mostly because I'm a fanboy =D But yea, that is another good question. Does it count as a sport. The anidb tags it sport. So I guess we shall roll with a technical yes, just like with suzuka
In real life I like sports in general but i can't get any entertainment out of watching it while I've recently read a review about One Outs, picked it up afterwards and I'am really enjoying it now.^^
Nay.. But I like Air Gear though, if you count that as sports..xD
The only Sports Anime and Manga I have watched before is Slamdunk. Other than that I juz ignore the others.
i like initial d.thats about the closest thing to a sport i like
Mee too! Can't believe I missed that.
Slam Dunk was good considering I'm an NBA junkie.. I don't really like those that combines sports and powers like Prince of Tennis
Funny thing is, Sport anime did not interest me at all. BUT, when non sport anime having sports event, it looks so interesting. Azumanga Daioh As you ever watch this anime, there's 3 episode dedicated for sport. And giving me LOL Lucky Star One episode about School Sport, remeber how funny Konata expressing her self how to winning the race? Remember when Yui Nee-Chan driving her car like Takumi Fujiwara? The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Baseball time! Man, that episode is so so funny!
Yay!!! my Anime Sports Fave Were Slam Dunk,Hajime no ippo,& Eyeshield 21...I dunno if Yu-Gi-Oh! is considerd as a sport anime
I like Eyeshield 21, only because Hiruma makes so many great field strategies. Other than that, not really into football. Just watch some animation studio or artist do a hockey manga/anime ^_^
Can't say i care much for them. I love the NFL, NBA, NHL, and baseball. Not a rabid fan, but i love the statistics and competition involved on the professional level, but playing them casually is really fun as well. However, i don't like the sports anime. From what i've seen, it is rather unrealistic. And since the biggest appeal to me lies in the statistical aspects, it only makes sense that watching real sports would appeal more to me. I might give a hockey sports anime a try if such a thing exists..
Ippo, Slam Dunk, and Initial D are the first that comes to mind. Well, As long as the story's good, I'm fine with it. Though seeing the characters improve makes sports anime a bit more interesting.
I'm a huge sports fan and I play Basketball, Soccer and Baseball in real life too. I was actually watching Ookiku Furikabutte before it was "licensed" on that website and they took it off.... Well, of course never count Slam Dunk out since it's a true classic :D
Not really into sports. Just never cared for them. I got to do archery a little while though and liked that. As for anime, I haven't really watched/read any yet. I'm looking into Eyeshield 21 and Bamboo Blade though so, I might start some!
I like basketball, tennis and ping pong but I don't follow it, otherwise I don't care so much for it but soccer's pretty cool too. As for sports stuff I tend to read the manga, my experience with sport animes are rather...ugh. Sport manga I really enjoy are Slam Dunk, Eyeshield 21 and Air Gear
In regards to sports-themed anime, I've only seen Eyeshield 21 and for the most part, I've enjoyed it. Though I find the terminology and phrases used throughout the series to be hilarious--of course, it could be that the subs I've watched stink.
Alas, these poor kids;they never read or watched any Mitsuru Adachi's sports manga that turns into anime or movies by the way,as i see, they ain't all compared to Touch. It's baseball drama and one of the highest-rated anime series.
I really liked Eyeshield 21, and also Prince of Tennis (although i liked the manga better). Slam Dunk and Whistle is pretty good too.
Slam Dunk (anime and manga!), Hajime no Ippo (Anime), Initial D (1st to 4th stage FTW) I really enjoy those animes including Tsubasa (old or new).. So yeah for me.. Is Baki the Grappler a sports themed anime too?
Bamboo blade anyone? not much into sports related stuff though i did find the baseball episode of Samurai Champloo hilarious.
i love sports in real life and in anime too. watched and loved Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, Bamboo Blade and Air Gear too.
I watch anything that's not guro and horror, so yes, I've watched my fair share of sports anime. I like it - it's a nice change from all the killing and shooting and sappy romance/fanservice every now and then. My definition of "sports" anime is closer to "competition" anime though - with series like Initial D included. As long as the action is explained somewhat and not completely unbelievable (as opposed to: I PULL SUPERNATURAL MOVE THAT CAN SHOOT SOMETHING INTO SPACE OUT OF MY AS-) then I'm fine.
The only sports anime I've ever watched was Air Gear. I hate sports.
Depends more on the anime's story for me. If an anime is based around a sport, but the story focuses more on the interplay between the characters and their daily lives (e.g. Bamboo Blade, Slam Dunk, Yawara, etc.), I tend to enjoy it. If the anime is focused more on the sport itself and how the characters perform in it (e.g. Captain Tsubasa, Prince of Tennis, etc.), then I tend to grow bored with the show.
I enjoy playing sports but I don't particularly like watching it. I didn't like sports animes/mangas that much until I became very open to new titles. Now, I occasionally enjoy reading one or two sports mangas but I'm still not crazy about it.
i´m really into sports as well my fav sport is Soccer & Tennis ^^ when i was a kid i used to watch Captain Tsubasa O.O i used to get soooo excited!! i´ve also watched Prince of Tennis & is really good as well. I love sports as much as i love Anime ^^
I'm not much into sports, though I'd probably like sports anime if I tried. Which is true to almost any type of anime. :P But it's like, there are already too many animes I'm really interested in, so I drop the sports one because it's not my main interest.
Eyeshield 21 (manga) d(^_^)b
I recently got into sports anime. I'm not sure if Kenichi counts but I also watched Ippo. I'm planning to watch Air Gear / Eyeshield 21 when/if they're complete.
Slam Dunk made me start playing basketball and Prince of Tennis made me start playing tennis...(^_^;)
I do enjoy watching sports animes but whether I like the series or not depends on the story. Ookiku Furikabutte is one of my favourite animes! I also watch Major but thinks that the older seasons are better. Other sports animes I've watch includes Hajime no Ippo , Bamboo Blade, Hungry Hearts, Initial D, Hikaru no Go, Suzuka. I didn't enjoy all of them though.
Oh I forgot One Outs. More about psychological tactics than sports but baseball is still a major component in it. Awesome anime btw :D
i feel ya on the major comment. I think the middleschool-highschool was best. and heres hoping for more ookibu frikabutte ! Seems it did well on japanese anime dvd sales, so maybe...
The only one I appreciate so far is Slam Dunk. I'm not a big fan of sports anime, but if the story is good or its entertaining than sure why not?
Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo and Prince of Tennis. Looking forward to the new season of Ippo.
