Morning Musume

Morning Musume
According to Yahoo News, Morning Musume is "finished."
TV viewing rates are down to 0.8% for the group which is really bad news.
One of the factors is apparently that "the group does not have any big names left". Any Morning Musume fans out there who can let us know more?

Bullshit, so what if the tv ratings are low? they still pack out concerts and sell out of merch all the time, hardly the signs of a 'finished' band.
Yahoo are just looking for headlines.

i was under the impression that Morning Musume "graduates" its members every year or so and they each one either goes solo or they band together to form a new group. If that were the case, they must not have had any girls who've made a good impression. But who cares???

Well... I'm not a fan... but I'll say what I know.

Morning Musume is a singing/dancing group right..?

I know they just had a hit song named "Mikan" over the winter...

just because TV ratings are down doesn't mean the group will disappear... they'll just sing. Not to mention, I bet they still have lots of other TV-related appearances... look at groups like SMAP for example. They just don't go and perform on TV, but for other things as well right?>

I think it's too early to say Morning Musume is "finished," but the group is having some trouble ever since Hitomi graduated and Miki resigned. Nobody expected Miki to resign, so it's not surprising that the group is running into some short-term problems. But with the long history of Morning Musume and their record-breaking achievements, I don't think they're ready to exit anytime soon. It's more like a temporary hiccup.

BTW, I'm a big Morning Musume fan. :P

It seems that everytime that MM get low ratings people start screaming that the sky is falling, they have been going 10 years strong now and dont show much sign of letting up, plus its not just MM, all the idol groups under hello! project sell great.
MM took a few blows in 2007 due to yossie/miki leaving, but Kusumi koharu is one of the hottest selling idols in Japan right now.
Morning musume are far far far from finised.

Who'd a thunk that Kusumi would be as popular as she is. Most people that I've spoken to say she has the worst voice in MM and she can't dance. I bet they're eating their words now.

I also think the popularity of MM is decreasing because they don't do "Hello Morning" anymore. I love that show and I miss it. Thank goodness for the internet and DVDs.

i’ll try to be positive here — this is just TV ratings and they still have albums, concerts and merchandises

Momusu is far from finished

'One of the factors is apparently that "the group does not have any big names left".'

This is so true. Their graduation gimmick, while good for the short term (eg. making quick headlines, immediate emotional effect on fans, keeping the group "fresh," and so on), proved to be their undoing in the long run in my opinion. Currently, only a relatively small group of devoted fans are keeping the group afloat; the vast majority of people in Japan can't name even a single member of the current Morning Musume lineup. It's quite sad when you consider how popular they were at their peak.

Before coming to Japan, I promised never to follow Morning Musume. I ended up going to concerts, buying the CDs, DVDs and merchandise...

But yes, it was primarily the original girls who captured my heart. While Koharu Kusumi was a great addition, the moment Hitomi Yoshizawa retired, it was over for me... I still love them and respect their work, but they're not the same with all the greatest ones gone.

Wasn't thier newest single the lowest selling opening week they've ever had or something? I wouldnt say i was a fan since its not my type of music, but i do like the old hello morning eps and watching them appear on music shows etc. Never seen many eps of the new show since people dont seem to sub it and i cant speak japanese.

It's probably just their tv show Haromoni@, that's getting cancelled. I like watching it though and really like the music overall and what is prduced for other groups through Hello! Project.

Lots of great talented people there. =]
