Akihabara for Sale

(Otaku(88)
Tue 2008/12/02 05:24
Folks who are visiting Tokyo now may want to get long to Asobit Hobby in Akiba as they are having a sale where many Gundam stuff is discounted up to 70%.

Most sales that I've come across are full of stuff that nobody wants though - stuff that the retailers need to get rid of. Any sales worth going to in your area?

Nothing like that in my area sadly. They are still charging $44 USD for the Nanoha Figma that came out who knows how long ago.

Sales on figures mostly consist of older figures, alot from the To Heart series, or Bome figure. Some Rah DX ones too. They're the only ones I've encounted at any rate.

There's a surprising amount of pre-Christmas sales goin on this year because of the slow economy. I've finished my gift shopping already. No gundam sale stuff around here tho.

Hmm, I have noticed it too, it's very hard to find something really good from discount sales. But of course it depends on that you are expecting to find:)

I think I know which one you're talking about. Although honestly, their anime consisted mainly of DVDs and North American copies of manga. It would've been nice if they had more miscellaneous items, like figures and stuff. Too much mainstream stuff. That and, I know it more as the Magic store since my friend went to play in tourneys there...

I remember a Newbury Comics store in Boston was moving a short distance away (from a commercial area to a more tourist place). So they had a huge sale because they were literally trying to get rid of the store's entire stock of dvds, comics, toys etc. I was able to get 2 Mon-Sieur Bome figures cheap. Sadly the new store is lacking.

I can't think of any other good sales although Rightstuf.com from now till Dec 7 is having a HUGE bargain sale of DVDs. I've gotten a couple of good entire series of 6 DVDs and Box for less than $50.

Most of the time it's either useless stuff or not that significant of a sale. Had a local place that had all used DVDs for $5. Normally they are $7 so it didn't matter too much, but I ended up getting some good deals, like the entire series of Serial Experiments Lain for $20, Nausicaa for $5, and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust for $5.

If something, figure shops around here will only raise the prices on figures that too many people want.

Most figure stores in Brazil would rather keep the figures forever rather than giving big discounts on them... unfortunately.

In my last trip to figure shopping, I've seen several figures that I've seen a couple of years ago in the same spot and same price. Kinda sad.

Well, if you think about it a store wouldn't have a sale unless it couldn't move its stock...otherwise, why discount items and make less money? You don't keep stuff unless you know you can sell it later, otherwise you get rid of it to fill your shelves with something that will.

Which is why I suppose anime stores around here never really have a sale and have small discounts at best. There's so few of them around that stock is bound to be move eventually, and restocking is done so infrequently and in such little amounts that they're not really in a rush to clear up shelve space.

It's rare for Anime retailers in Los Angeles to throw sales similiar to this one. Usually when they do have sales they also place things nobody wants on sale. At Kinokuniya Bookstore in L.A. they have old magazines up to 80% off, because of how old these magazines are. They have that sale about twice a year though.

During christmas is the best time to go buy anime goods.
I know of 4 anime/manga stores (all up to 30mins away) and chirstmas is TRULY the best time of the year. Some sales would be "buy 4 get 1 free", "buy 2 get 1 half off". Also, I think that the holidays is the time that they would want to get rid of most items, and bring in new stuff for the new year.
I live in Toronto, Canada. but when ever I go to the states, Shopping for manga there is one of the best things ever, there is so much more to choose from, and going to a regular book store is about just as good as an anime/manga shop. Though dress shopping is very fun as well. haha :3
