What Japan Thinks covers a survey of wide screen display usage in Japan. Laptop display results:- -Standard display ratio 68.5% -Wide-screen 25.3% -Don’t know 6.2% Desktop display results:- -Standard display ratio 67.5% -Wide-screen 29.0% -Don’t know 3.6% So it still looks like only 25%-ish of Japanese folks are using a wide screen display. Me been using wide screen since I switched to Mac in 2005 and personally prefer it. Do hear that there are many folks who much prefer the 3:4 ratio though. Pic of this mornings desk taken a few mins ago. Hmmmm. Is that a new oppai mouse pad?
I'm rocking a 1920x1080 res on my 37" HDTV
which I should mention, I once in a blue moon use as a tv. And when I do, it's for my ps2/xbox360 it's LCD btw.
I'm actually using a normal laptop screen 15.4"
By thw ay, Danny you changed you oppai mouse pad xD
Oh nice observations my dear Watson!
My old Apple 22" 16:10 Cinema Display (2001) died on me and I reverted back to my old Dell 17" 4:3.
i'm using a widescreen (16:10) and a normal (4:3) one at the moment, combined resolution...2960x1050
I'm still stuck with a 19" LCD in 4:3 aspect ratio T_T.. Needs widescreen to better enjoy videos since they are all released in WS format nowadays.
I wish I had a 19". 17" here T~T. At least it's LCD.
I'm using a standard display atm. Might switch to a widescreen when I finally get my own comp.
I'm using a standard ratio because my computer model was 4 years old and we went for the cheaper price. LOL Anyways, I think you have a new oppai mouse pad and it's showing that must not be shown. o.0
14.1" laptop running at 1440x900 resolution. Its pretty good but I do have to admit the screen does strain my eyes at times especially since I wear glasses but when I'm at home, I don't wear them and as a result, sitting normally makes it hard to focus on the screen properly. I also have trouble using photoshop when I'm colouring or drawing. That said, I don't regret it. Its a nice screen. Only wish it was LED backlit though... btw, how is it possible for 6.2% laptop users and 3.6% desktop users don't know which they have...?
My desktop is standard, my laptop is widescreen. Both have it's strength and weaknesses. Like my work... The computer that needs the widescreen cannot support it because it's a PowerMac 9000, whereas the newer G4 has a widescreen, but I prefer it in standard screen. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, eh?
same here, widescreen for lappy, non widescreen for desktop. personally prefer widescreen but for work purposes i'll keep both. wait if i have extra cash i'll probably just get a new set of desktop with ws cinematic display.. hmm..
Widescreen for me ...I like em wide for movies and space for multitask....
standard because my LCD's a rather old model and haven't seen the need to upgrade it. maybe when i move out then that's a different story.
My laptop screen is 1280x800 pixels, it's native resolution. I like it, make me more easy to view images and editing.
I used to use a 4:3 19" monitor, but when I decided to get a new (and larger) one, they were all widescreen so it wasn't like I had a choice. I've grown accustomed to widescreen now, and my laptop which I bought a few months ago is widescreen too.
I don't like 3:4 ratio anymore, it doesn't look big enough anymore (a have a big screen btw).
Nice Oppai pad! Hmm, is that the finished version of this Buraban oppai mousepad? All I've seen are pics of the original illustration preview shots, no images of the actual mousepad itself, so I'm assuming the added sky backround is only in the finished product... http://www.amiami.com/shop/ProductInfo/product_id/105797
Sharp optical eyes you have - its her.
Thanks - they've been hones through years of practice ;)
I had been using my old laptop which was a 4:3 display until recently. I bought a new laptop that has a widescreen resolution. And I had no choice of the display resolution because all laptops sold here are widescreen. I prefer the widescreen display, though.
Since early this year, 2560x1600, 30" Dell widescreen. Before that was a normal 19" CRT.
I would still prefer 4:3 over widescreen, but I rarely see standard anymore. Only reason I kept using widescreen since switching three years ago was, was because high definition 16:9/16:10, and it is nice to play games and watch movies in HD.
I will love 4:3 ratio till I die. But when I had to get a new laptop it was widescreen.... so I got used to it... then when I got my new(free) computer it was 4:3 fullscreen. Sooo it was weird to start with. But now I have the best of both worlds lol. (I have a little chunky tv which is 4:3 too. I loves it. My little Matsui!!)
Right now I'm using a widescreen screen... On ma laptop for the internet. My big comp doesnt get connected to the net very regularly. Avoiding the hassle really lol.
Widescreen forever!!
At work, I'm running off of a 23" Apple Cinema HD display. It's so pretty *w*
I run a 22" Samsung widescreen at 1680x1050 for my computer. I like higher widescreen resolutions since you can put documents side by side and have enough space to view many things. The lower resolutions for widescreen can be terrible though. Oh and widescreen is nice for playing shooting/action games especially ^_^ Low res - standard display High res - widescreen
I preferred widescreen ever since I got my laptop...
Both laptop and external monitor are SD. Been meaning to get a 22" widescreen for awhile but still waiting for prices to drop a bit more first.
Using a 15" widescreen laptop.
Still using the 19" 5:4 montior that came with the desktop package. Although I do plan to get a second widescreen monitor this Christmas but that's still a month away.
My Laptop is running at 1440x900... wide screen or not has never really phased me, but I guess I do prefer it in the end.
Eh... i dunno how to vote... my Desktop is a wide screen 19" while my labtop is a 13" standard screen ... ... ... but i think i preferred wide screen, i like seeing more... that means i can do more. Multi-tasking FTW!
FOr me wide screen is better. I find it easier to accomplish CG tasks much faster. Also i really love the feel of a big desktop.
I bought a samsung 245bw last year on black friday actually lol this is my one year anniversary
Oh! I have the Samsung 245Bw as well, nice monitor isn't it? ^^
ever since I got my 22in computer onitor, I've been using widescreen and loving it.
I upgraded from 15" Standard display lcd which I was using for 6 years plus that broke down 8 mth ago to a 21.6" widescreen one and been loving it...^_^
I was a 4:3 user until last year when my office moniter was upgraded to dual 19" WS. Since then i got myself a 22"WS for my desktop at home, and a TX2500 WS tablet. I like the extra space available, for widgets
Dual 19 inch widescreens and 42 inch widescreen HDTV here. My laptop is a 17 inch widescreen as well. Not a single 4:3 display in my apartment. I do want a theater aspect ratio screen though (1.85 : 1 or 2.35 : 1) and watch actual theater reels and screeners on it, although they are extremely rare.
My desktop runs with two 4:3 screens, and I didn't really understand the whole widescreen thing until I got a MacBook Pro last year. Then...*wow*. ^^ I hate using my desktop now, even if it technically has more real estate. The standard ratio feels so chunky to me. ><
Still on a 15" LCD which I have been using for 5 years plus. Feel like going for something bigger but is space restricted.
Widescreen is nice but it can be a pain to get working properly with Windows games (which I finally figured out how to do a month ago, using custom resolutions and a custom video driver).
Two 20" Dells at 1680x1050. Laptop is 13.3" at 1280x800.
My laptop is a widescreen but my desktop is a 15 inch standard. =.=''' Saving money to get a at least 22 inch widescreen.
I use a dual screen, my main screen is a 22" Acer with 1680x1050 resolution. The second one is a 18.5 inch, forget what brand, I think Sony.
I prefer standard display ratio simply because my wallpapers are designed for it
Switched to Widescreen from a CRT 17" not long ago...and the world is so wide and colorful with this Samsung 22" LCD :)
Got a 19" widescreen 1440x900. Really wanna dual wield but its a bit costly and I hate it when the monitors arent the same size DX
3:4 feel so restrictive now that I have been using widescreen. My problem now is I want something larger! ^^; Wonder how long it will take until we see larger LED backlit Cinema Display...
My Macbook is widescreen, but my desktop is standard display. My desktop monitor is dying on me, though, so I'm saving up to get a nice widescreen monitor soon.
Had been using 12.1" 1024X768 on my lappy but i use my 26" LCD TV for output display occasionally too for video playing/dvd/tv/gaming xD.
I just switched to Mac and I also like the widescreen. I feel that it's nice for viewing 2 pages or to put toolbars on the side and feel less cramped...
am using 1680x1050 widescreen and loving it very much. :3
i am using dual 1080p widescreen haha ><
using a samsung T220 1680x1050 multitask for work and 720p/1080p anime
I want to buy 3x 24in moniters and hook them up together but not money
Me has no funds for new widescreen monitor T^T
Is laptop with 4:3 ratio still available today...?? The only laptop i saw in the market today is only available in widescreen.... maybe they're still exist in Japan... This is kinda ironic if you think about it... since most of the best HDTV today are made in japan.. well, i guess the same hold true for any electronics... I used to prefer 4:3 too... but lately, i think i became more fond of widescreen... when i buy my next Desktop PC, i'm thinking of buying a small HDTV as the monitor... the only drawback of widescreen that i found thus far, rare wallpaper and not supported by any eroge/VN i stumbled upon... I hate fat Saber, Rin and Nagisa.
I have dual Standard Display Monitors for my main PC setup, but my laptop is a widescreen.
Well don't have a lappy yet, as I work in my university, it's not far and I has a computer in it too. At home I use a Samsung 2032bw 20in 1680x1050 panel. In school, I use a 19in widescreen AOC. Love wide screen for watching stuffs. And I hate analog output, I can notice the difference.
4:3 AR for Video / 16:9 for HD-Video working on 2 1440x990 res, have a 3rd monitor with a 4:3 AR for QCing stuff. :D
Currently my 24" LCD is set at 1920x1200, mostly for my PS3 so I get the full 1080 lines. At first, I didnt really take to liking the 16:9 ratios, but over time, IVe gotten pretty much used to it over the traditional 4:3.
haha, I'm still stuck with the old 4:3 ratio CRT screens. But i do dual screen with my hdtv in widescreen so I can watch movies and anime on there.
Widescreen just makes more sense. Your field of vision is widescreen, and reading is generally a horizontal movement.
24" iMac @ 1920 x 1200.
Wide screen FTW. It''s great for having two pages of a document open and seeing how edits on page "x" effect page "y". I'd have TWO 22" screens, but alas.. my money and space are not infinite.
19" wide for primary and a 17" stndrd for secondary i'm gonna have to replace the 17" soon - keeps blacking out randomly and is the oldest of the 2. definitely prefer wide
I'm using Widescreen... but in Brazil, the numbers are probably like 10% or less for Widescreen...
1680x1050 at home. at work the it dept still didn't give me a widescreen monitor (even though i'm part of it) best part is the views look natural to the eyes, not like a square box.
Desktop is a 23" Apple Cinema widescreen, at 1920x1280. The laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet) is an interesting one though: 12.1" screen, with a 1400x1050 resolution—smaller than most "old" 1280x1024 monitors (17", 19") but a very nice, crisp revolution.
I have a big sexy widescreen mac, its lovely ... also I need to get myself a mousepad like that ... yum
I got 19inch widescreen lcd. The sad thing is, what i paid for my 19", the 22" ones cost less than a year later. Ah well, will buy a high quality 22" widescreen when i have some spare cash, hopefully one that i can use as a tv as well. The LG's look very good.
Well that's one oppai mouse pad I definitely want, but definitely can never have as I couldn't leave it out for the family to see :(
danny I want that oppai mousepad >.<
Wait! What happened to Haruka?
Most laptops are in widescreen nowadays. Looks cooler... My display is a litter weirder. 1280 X 768.
My Laptop widescreen my desktop standard
Widescreen is the way to go! Much better to work with then standard.
my hubby use sony bravia wide screen for his PC screen also as TV screen :3
Always prefered wide screen displays, love to have the extra firefox tabs visible across the screen :D
Since they became mainstream and affordable, I switched and now use widescreen only. I have a 24 inch Samsung 245Bw at 1920x1200 and a 19 inch Samsung 940Bw at 1440x900. Never had any issues with 4:3 aspect ratio, especially for gaming it was nice, but 16:10 is terrific too as you can have more information onscreen.
A lot of applications (and I'm using that in a very general sense) were specifically written for 3:4 and even 4:3 so I can see where they have their use. I really hate running something out of it's intended aspect ratio.
I use two, 4:3 (normal) for regular browsing, and 16:9 (wide) for viewing movies and stuff like that (my 32" lcd tv)
I've been widescreen only for over 5 years now. 4:3 seems horribly constrained now if I ever have to use it.
Danny can you ask users whether they prefer standard avatars or animated. I have seen some animated ones which are poor quality and are very distracting. I love your site for its clean pleasing design and layout. It is soooo easy on the eyes. By allowing animated avatars, its going to get real messy. Like a super crazy christmas tree, all lit up, and very distracting. ps I switch from 4:3 aspect to widescreen every 6 months or so. They both have their merits. If you ever decommision your monitor, you can donate it to me! x
I'm fine using both either of them. I have regular laptop with 15.4" widescreen, and on my desktop I use 5:4 ratio Eizo monitor. But when I buy a new monitor, it will be a widescreen one.
nice desktop !!! you put your MBP on something to get it higher, what is it exactly ??? bcause i have the same laptop and wireless keyboard and i want to have the same situation but so far i only found some ugly black plastic accessories... thx
I've been using a 19" widescreen for a couple of years now, just ordered a 22" widescreen as an upgrade today, as a matter of fact. My sister said she likes my old 19" screen better than the average 22" screen, so she will be using my old one now. ^^
although i would like a widescreen lcd monitor but my pocket dont allow me.i will be on job soon hopefully and this is on my list.
Woah! All of you guys have larger monitor screens! I'm stuck at 1024X768 T.T...
Mine's a Samsung 19 inch at 1440x900. Can't even imagine using a 4:3 monitor nowadays. Might wanna upgrade to a 24 inch with HDMI once I get my hands on a PS3... ^^
Really small monitor @ 1024 x 768. Really need a bigger one, can never afford it... ;-;
using 1440x900 on my 19" WS & my 40" HDTV
One 21" wide screen that I connect to my laptop to do dual screen. ^_^ In a few years, these will be obsolete with better LCD technology X_X
my laptop has a wide 1366 x 768 resolution screen. ^^
widescreen for me. got a 1280x800 on my Vaio and a similar lay out on the 32" Bravia when I hook it up to the laptop.
I use neither 4:3 nor 16:9, but 5:4! XD
As of two days ago I finally upgraded from my old bulky 1024X768 monitor to a sweet 19 inch 1440X900 wide screen monitor. I still have my old monitor, I use it as the second screen in my duel-screen setup.
Just switched to a 22' inch Widescreen monitor a month ago. Lovin' it!
Widescreen is sooooo much better to work.=D
I got a new laptop about 5 months ago and it is widescreen and it is just wonderful. I would love to have something widescreen with really good resolution that could double as tv kinda for my 360. Alas i don't have the money for such an acquisition presently.
I'm using a 22" 1680x1050 display.
Hmm, I don't count a TV as widescreen though ;p my laptop: WS my 32" HDTV: WS my monitor is only 17" so no WS, the Samsung 172X - which I bought at US$550 years ago, it's still working flawlessly so there's no reason to replace it.
I really wonder why so many guys are still using 4:3 displays. I've got a 24" Samsung Syncmaster ( http://austrianotakulife.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/room-upgrade-phase-2-of-4/ )with a resolution of 1920x1200 a week ago (have been using a 1680x1050 Syncmaster before) and will get another 24" Syncmaster in the next months. I guess 3840x1200 rockz xD
I'm using a 17" LCD, 1024x768. T_T
2 x Dell 24 inch screens 1920 x 1200 for general pc web surfing then networked pc to 46 inch plasma 1920 x 1200 for my streaming Anime addiction (also used for occasional web surfing and info) from 2 terabytes of multiple hardrive backups. I need to get serious and purchase a larger NAS server.
24" Samsung for PC gaming and normal usage, 46" Bravia for Video, Bluray/DVD and game console viewing/playing ^^. Macbook Pro 15" less use until uTorrent is available for MacOSX, then, everything will be done on mac woot.
Ive been using widescreen since I got my first laptop in 2005. I use a 4:3 monitor for my secondary monitor, but I stole that one from my mom. =]
I used two monitors with 4:3 ratio but that took up too much space so now I'm just using one 19". The widescreens are nice but if I bought one I would have to make other purchases to accommodate and I like my 19" too much, it was quite expensive at the time but I got a new one at a steal on ebay.
I like tall more then wide. Good thing I have 1920x1200 at home and 1600x1200 x2 at work. My laptop has 1440x900 and I seriously hated the wide screen because it does not have enough Y resolutions. Look at most websites, the design works much better in portrait mode.
I am loving the widescreen, 1440x900 is my laptop's now but I also have a 1680x1050 back home in london... I am desperately saving money for a 30"cinema display as it looks so awesome. Do like the widescreen as i can keep small applications along the side still viewable with my main focus at a good width
20 inch NEC widescreen- very handy for art. I should add a second monitor to help out.
24 inch Samsung widescreen. For some reason the screen gets so small so fast when you're sitting in front of it about 6+ hours a day. Tempted to get a 30 inch.
still stuck with my old blury 17" CRT, my plan to get new widescreen LCD has failed :(
I personally like the wide screen on laptops, it's great to watch stuff on. And also good for programming with IDE's like Eclipse and Visual Studio, where you have toolbars on the sides.
My samsung 24" panel was a disappointment @ $670US when I bought it a few months ago, so I'm on my old Sony CRT for now.... and still looking for a better monitor.
14.1" 1280x800 laptop and a 1280x1024 desktop (no idea about the size though). Is 1280x800 widescreen? The manual claims that it is widescreen and HD, but it doesn't seem that way to me...
yes it's widescreen
for a long time I was running a really really ancient 19" Iiyama Prolite TFT - perchased back in the days where a TFT were just becoming popular & cost me £300. I recently perchased a 22" Samsung SM226cw which runs 1680x1050rez that cost me £265 :( In a time where u can get a decent 22" for £150 I fork out for that little bit more for something thats more of a 'premium grade' product rather then something that just does the job. ¬*Sigh*¬ & sorry I have been absent from the site for a long long period of time. I think my house is either haunted or im cursed because im having a crap load of techincal difficulties with both my internet & PC at the same time. My internet has been having problems where its working one moment then it will suddenly drop the connection complete either for 30seconds or a lot lot longer. Ive checked the router logs & theres tons of stuff regarding PPP errors & some inablility to establish a connection to the ISP. Then not even 2 days ago 1 of the hard drives on my PC decided to die & funnily enough it was the drive that I had installed the O/S on so I had to run off to the shop & grab 2 new hard drives & 1 copy of Vista which ive been installing & making it 'operational' to my standards over the last day or so. at the same time again my new Logitech Z-5500 speakers seem to be going on the blink - often freezing & shutting down at odd moments. who knows...
been rockin widescreen 27" for 2 years now, couldn't really imagine going back now. I would like to get a Mac Pro with a cinema display for christmas :)
I'm really liking your setup Danny. I running with two 22" wide screen samsungs with my desktop. Thinking about getting a 24" apple monitor to go along with my MBP. :)
Only widescreen. My first widescreen was an Acer and I ended up getting really annoyed that whenever I switched to a 4:3 resolution (games tend to do that) it stretched the screen. I didn't think much about it until I had a picture of 2D girls rotating on the centre of the screen. I noticed that the oppai changed size depending on where it was due to the rotation and stretching (yes, the dirty screen stretched the oppai ^^) and then I started to note it everywhere >.< The Imac display can handle both 4:3 with black edges and 4:3(stretched). I like that but maybe Acer can do that today as well. It's not really fair to compare two monitors of different age.
Currently using standard displau ratio for all my displays... but always wanted to change to wide screen display if my wallet allows to...
Widescreens are love. Not only do I watch a lot of movies and love that it's close to the original aspect ratio, but I find it more aesthetically pleasing as well. And easier to manage multiple windows on. And and and. :) The only thing I find irritating is trying to find good wallpapers big enough for the sucker that I actually like.
Hmm... I'm not really into widescreens... ^^; (can't afford it) They look pretty though, that I'll admit!
got a Dell 2407 @ 1920x1200 Reso and 15.4 lappie @ 1680x1050 ^_^ Widescreens FTW!!
I use a pair, with an additional third planned: professional necessity that lead to personal preference. I don't think I could fit my work habits into a standard ratio monitor, anymore.
Wide screen for me! and I'll also take one of those mouse pads too.. :P
WS laptop since 2004, 'tis a pain to find wallpapers. looking to get a 24/25.5" monitor now. I would also like to know how many folks out there still use CRT monitors............
i use standard for my desktop and widescreen for my laptop.
Interesting. I don't think any laptops ship with non-wide screen displays these days...
